  • Now then! What will Ireland be thinking? Take the lead, bat for as long as possible? You bet, they would sense a real opportunity here to go way ahead in the game. England on the other hand, need wickets and that too quickly. You can't rule that out though, seeing the class they have in the bowling line-up and with the wicket assisting the bowlers, we are in for an exciting passage of play after Lunch. Join us in a while.
  • Not a lot you can write about the English batting line-up. 8 of them failed to get to double digits out of which three were dismissed for ducks. 23 by Denly is their top scorer and Olly Stone, the man who came out to bat second last, is their second highest scorer. A very sorry display by their batters.
  • WOW! How many of you all expected the game to be where it is at the moment? Not once had I thought, Ireland would, let alone win a session but even have a chance of doing so but they have proved me and surely many others wrong. After being asked to field, their bowlers have delivered and in some way. Tim Murtagh and Mark Adair ran through the English batting line-up. The latter played more of a supporting role whereas the former was the mainstay. He picked his maiden fifer in his first spell itself. Boyd Rankin then joined the party and bagged two for himself. Thompson can be a touch disappointed with how he bowled but overall, Ireland will be over the moon at the moment.
  • It is Tim Murtagh, the 37-year old, the star of today for Ireland, the tormentor-in-chief leads them off the field. He receives a standing ovation as he does and it is well deserved. It is due to his efforts, Ireland head into the LUNCH BREAK as the happier side.
  • 23.4 OUT! Plays it on! The bowling change does the trick for Ireland. Extra bounce does the trick for Adair here. It is on a length and around middle, takes off after pitching. Stone looks to defend but the ball hits his arm and then deflects onto the stumps. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 85!
  • 23.3 FOUR! A little too full this time by Adair. The ball was there to be hit wide outside off and Olly gives it the treatment. He gets down on one knee and drives it through the point region for a boundary.
  • 23.2 Fullish ball outside off again by Adair. Stone mistimes it as the ball rolls to the cover fielder.
  • 23.1 Wide outside off and full in length by Adair. Stone throws his bat at it but misses.
  • Mark Adair is back on!
  • 22.6 Good length delivery on off stump, Leach tries to defend off the back foot but misses it. 81/9
  • Ian Ward on air says that the lunch can be extended till 1.30 p.m local.
  • 22.5 This time a good length delivery on off stump, Leach defends it towards the off side.
  • 22.4 Rankin keeps the short ball going, this time on the off side. Leach attempts to cut it but plays and misses.
  • 22.3 Another short delivery on the leg stump, Leach ducks under it to allow the ball to go back to the keeper.
  • 22.2 Short ball outside off stump, Leach leaves it alone again.
  • 22.1 Short delivery on the leg side, Leach lets it go back to the keeper.
  • 21.6 FOUR! Third boundary in the over! Thompson is leaking runs. This is fuller and around off, Stone strokes it through covers and it races away. 12 from the over. A very expensive one. 81/9
  • 21.5 Goes back to bowling on a length, it is kept out.
  • 21.4 Straight down the ground! This is fuller and on middle, Stone shows the full face of the bat and strokes it past mid on and it races away. Consecutive boundaries.
  • 21.3 FOUR! These are handy runs for England. A full ball outside off, Stone drives it square on the off side and it races away to the fence.
  • 21.2 On the stumps, Stone hits it back towards the bowler.
  • 21.1 This is outside off, it is left alone.
  • 20.6 Single of the last ball. The ball is bowled onto the pads of Stone by Rankin. Stone turns it towards the fine leg fielder for a run. 69/9
  • 20.5 Similar length to the last ball. Rankin bowls it full trying to induce the drive and Stone responds by pushing it to mid on. No runs taken.
  • 20.4 Stones pushes this fullish ball off the front foot towards mid on.
  • 20.3 This time Rankin misses his mark a bit and bowls it on the pads of Leach. He flicks it to square leg and gets off the mark as the batters take a single.
  • 20.2 Boyd welcomes Leach to the crease with the short ball. He ducks under it and lets it go to the keeper.
  • Jack Leach is the new man in.
  • 20.1 OUT! There goes England's last hope of taking them close to the 100-run mark. A sharp catch by the short leg fielder. This is on the pads, Curran works it but does not keep it down. It goes low to the fielder there who is in a good position and he hangs onto it.
  • 19.6 Good shot from Curran, Good length delivery from Thompson which is going down leg. Curran plays it towards mid-wicket and the batsmen run three to keep Curran on strike for the next over. 67/8
  • 19.5 Good length delivery on leg stump, Stone glances it towards mid-wicket for a single.
  • 19.4 Fuller length delivery, on the pads, Stone gets hit on the pads and there is a mild appeal for an LBW but it is going past leg.
  • 19.3 Good length delivery on middle stump, Curran gets an inside edge and goes towards square leg for a single.
  • 19.2 Good length ball, on middle stump, Stone misses and gets hit on the pads. A quick single taken.
  • 19.1 Good length delivery outside off stump, Stone tries to defend it but gets an outside edge which falls short of the first slip fielder
  • 18.6 Curran is living dangerously here which should be avoided in this situation. Boyd bowls it on a shortish length on the off pole line. Curran tries to pull it but gets a top edge to it. The ball flies to the empty region behind the keeper and the batters are able to pick up a couple of runs. End of a successful over for the Irish. 61/8
  • 18.5 Stone is off the mark in edgy fasion. Rankin hits the deck hard on the fourth stump line. It swings onto the middle and off pole line. Stone plays at it but gets a thick outside edge as the ball goes to the third man region where the batters are able to pick up a single.
  • Olly Stone is the new man in.
  • 18.4 OUT! There is an edge! Once again, brilliant use of the review by England. Boyd Rankin takes just the 4 balls to strike. This is around off and it is a little shorter in length. Broad looks to defend but there is a sound as the ball passes the bat. The keeper, William Porterfield takes it brilliantly by diving to his right. An appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. Ireland review and Ultra Edge shows a spike as it passes the bat. Ireland continue to stay on top here.
  • Ireland have taken a review for caught behind. They are confident they have got their man. Let's see what the replays have to say.
  • 18.3 Rankin bowls it short again. Broad pushes it back to him off the back foot. The plan by the Irish here looks to bowl short to Broad.
  • A short leg coming in place! Broad maybe getting more of the short stuff here.
  • 18.2 Shortish this time on the body of Broad by Rankin. He tucks it to the mid-wicket fielder.
  • 18.1 On the money first up. Boyd bowls it on the middle pole line on a length. Broad defends it off the back foot to the cover fielder.
  • Boyd Rankin is on now!
  • 17.6 Another dot to end! This thoughwas creamed. Fuller and on off, Curran hits it hard but to extra cover. 58/7
  • 17.5 Down the leg side, Curran lets it go by. These are not wided in the longer format.
  • 17.4 Another good length ball on off, Curran pushes it to covers.
  • 17.3 Back of a length and on off, Curran stands tall and keeps it out.
  • 17.2 Well bowled! This is what he should be bowling. On a length and around off, slants away the angle. Curran looks to push at it but it goes off the outside edge to gully.
  • 17.1 Another poor ball by Thompson! He gets away with it. It is very full and outside off, Curran drives it square on the off side but finds point.
  • 16.6 Uppish but in the gap! A couple to end! This is on the fuller side around off, Broad plays a check-drive over covers. The fielder at mid off hares after it and pushes it back in just before the ropes. The umpire does go upstairs to check if it is a boundary but replays show that the fielder has done well. 58/7
  • 16.5 5 dots in a row as this length ball is pushed to mid off.
  • 16.4 Continues landing it on a length and around off, Broad keeps it out.
  • 16.3 Top class stuff! This is just outside off, Broad lets it be.
  • 16.2 Another good length ball around off, Broad guides it towards point.
  • 16.1 A muted appeal! This is around leg stump and then comes back in. Broad looks to defend but misses to get hit on the pads. It is going down leg.
  • 15.6 A single to end a very good over for England. 13 from it. Good length and on off, this is pushed towards cover-point for one. 56/7
  • 15.5 Good length and on off, this is kept out.
  • 15.4 Three now! Stuart has not started well. He bowls this one very full again and on off, Curran jams it past mid off and bags three.
  • 15.3 Another fuller one on off, Curran mistimes it to mid on.
  • 15.2 FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries! This time off the edge! Good length and on off, Curran looks to defend but it goes off the outside edge through backward point and for a boundary.
  • 15.1 FOUR! Not timed that well but hit well enough for it to reach the ropes! Poor bowling by Thompson. He has to continue the pressure built by the opening bowlers. He serves a half volley outside off, Curran hits it through covers and the ball races away to the fence.
  • 15.1 Starts off with a no ball! This is outside off, it is left alone.
  • Change in bowling. Stuart Thompson is introduced into the attack.
  • 14.6 Another good length delivery, Broad prods forward to defend it back to the bowler. 43/7
  • 14.5 Good length delivery outside off stump, Broad lets it go back to the keeper.
  • 14.4 Good length delivery with a little bit of a swing on it. Broad gets hit on the pads and there is an appeal for LBW but turned down.
  • 14.3 Shorter and on middle, Broad hops and defends it.
  • The new man in is Stuart Broad. He can bat but has not been very good with the willow in the recent past.
  • 14.2 OUT! Another one bites the dust! Tim Murtagh has a fifer to his name! His first in Tests and what a venue to get it and what a time to get it. All those years of playing for Middlesex is paying off here. Outstanding from him. Moeen Ali walks back for a duck. Once again, the line and the length is perfect. It is around off, pitches and moves away. Moeen once again plays it inside the line and the ball kisses the outside edge and goes into the mitts of the keeper.
  • 14.1 Good length delivery straying on the pads, Curran glances it to fine leg for a single. He is off the mark.
  • 13.6 Finally bowls one on the stumps in this over. Moeen taps it back to the bowler. 42/6
  • 13.5 This one is pitched outside off and it comes in with the angle. Moeen though knows where his off stump is and leaves it alone.
  • 13.4 Comes around the wicket and bowls it on the fourth stump line. Moeen is not tempted to drive this and he watchfully leaves it alone.
  • 13.3 This is closer to off pole but Moeen has nothing to do with it.
  • 13.2 Way outside off, Moeen shoulders arms to it.
  • 13.1 Fuller outside off, Moeen keeps his eyes on the ball and leaves it alone.
  • The new man in is Sam Curran. He will need to play a gem of a knock here to get his side out of trouble.
  • 12.6 OUT! Umpire's call and Woakes now has to take the long walk back! This is unreal stuff, just unbelievable. Who would have thought England would be struggling and how! Second wicket in the over for Murtagh and 4th overall. He is breathing fire at the moment. Once again it is the movement off the pitch which gets the better of the batter. It pitches on off and then jags back in sharply. Woakes like a few other English batter, ends up playing outside the line. The ball hits him high on the back pad. An appeal follows and the finger is up. An appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Woakes reviews. Replays roll and they show that the ball is clipping the top of middle. England don't lose their review though but are in big, big trouble here. 42/6
  • Have Ireland got another? Woakes has been given out LBW but he has reviewed. Has he got an inside edge or is it going over? It looks like it could be overturned.
  • 12.5 Short delivery outside off stump, Woakes lets it go back to the keeper.
  • Chris Woakes walks out to bat now. He would not have expected to walk out so soon today when he came to the ground.
  • 12.4 OUT! TIMBER! Right through the gate! England are five down and they have not even crossed 50. It seems like they are still in the hangover of their World Cup win. Another excellent delivery by Murtagh. This is fuller and around off, it tails back in late. Bairstow leaves a gap between bat and pad as he looks to drive, it sneaks through and hits the off pole. Into the bowling all-rounders now are Ireland.

  • 12.2 Another good length ball on off stump, Bairstow defends it towards mid off.
  • 12.1 Fuller and on off, Bairstow strokes it back past the bowler, it hits the stumps at the other end and deflects toward mid off.
  • Moeen Ali is the new man in. England are in deep, deep trouble here.
  • 11.6 OUT! Three reds and Root has been given his marching orders! Ireland all over England at the moment. Root, England's main batter, is walking back without making a lot of impact. Excellent use of the review by the Irish. Adair has his second now. This is on off and on a length. It jags back in. Root misses the ball as he tries to defend and gets his on the pads. A huge appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. The Ireland players can't believe it. Their skipper though has a doubt whether there is an inside edge. He goes for the review right at the end and it proves to be the right decision. Replays roll in and it shows the on-field call has to be overturned. Pin-drop silence here. 42/4
  • Ireland review! A huge appeal for an LBW has been turned down. Looks very close. Root is the man in question. Big moment in the game.
  • 11.5 Goes back to bowling it just outside off, Root lets it be.
  • 11.4 FOUR LEG BYES! Appeal for LBW by the Irish. Adair pitches it on middle and leg on good length, the ball nips back into Joe Root with the angle. Looks to be going down the leg pole from the naked eye. It hits the front pad of Root and the ball rolls down to the fine leg fence for a boundary.
  • 11.3 Well left again. Adair is looking to bowl outside off to induce the drive from Root. Root shoulders arms to this one though.
  • 11.2 Root is off the mark. Length ball outside off, he gets close to the ball and guides it to third man for a couple of runs.
  • 11.1 On a length outside off, the ball swings away from Root. He leaves it alone.
  • 10.6 Good length delivery on middle stump, Bairstow misses the ball and gets hit on the waist. Excellent over from Murtagh comes to an end. 36/3
  • That was very late! Bairstow pulls out at the very end, after the bowler delivers. The ball hits the stumps but it is given as a dead ball.
  • Some confusion out there! Bairstow feels the over is done and has walked down the ground to have a word with Root. The umpire though walks up to him and asks him to resume batting as there is still a ball to go.
  • 10.5 Short ball outside off stump, Bairstow lets it go back to the keeper.
  • Jonny Bairstow is the new man in. England have lost their top 3 here, Bairstow and Root will need to steady the ship here.
  • 10.4 OUT! There goes another one! England are in a spot of bother now. Murtagh gets his second. Another good catch, this time by the keeper. Tim bowls it slightly fuller around off, it tails away late. Burns looks to drive but he ends up playing inside the line. The ball goes off the outside edge and low towards the keeper who takes a good tumbling catch. Ireland are making excellent use of the new ball here.

  • 9.5 OUT! That is plumb in front! Adair gets one now and it is a well-deserved wicket. He has really been bowling well since the start and he gets the reward. The in-dipper catches Denly off guard. It starts from outside off and it tails back in. Denly ends up playing outside the line. The ball hits the back pad. A huge appeal follows and the umpire has his finger up immediately. This is a good start for Ireland.
  • 9.4 This is on the pads, Denly works it wide of fine leg and takes an easy two.
  • 9.3 Inside edge! Fuller and outside off, Denly looks to drive it away from the body. It goes off the inside edge and then onto the pads.

  • 4.6 Good length ball on off, Burns plays it to point. 13/1
  • 4.5 Indecision from Denly there. Good length ball outside off, it comes back in after pitching. Denly initially looks to defend but then decides to leave. He is too late though as when he takes his bat up the ball hits his bat. Luckily for him he plays it with soft hands. The ball goes to the man at slip on a bounce. The man there misfields allowing them to take one. Denly needs to be more careful here and not be in two minds.

  • Joe Denly walks out at number 3.
  • 2.4 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Roy's luck runs out! A poor outing on his debut. Ireland have struck early and they are mighty delighted. Just the start they would have wanted. This is a very good nut by Murtagh. It is on a length around off and shaping away just a little. Roy is drawn into the stroke. He pushes at it a little too hard. The ball goes off the outside edge low to first slip where Stirling takes it nicely.

  • It is toss time at Lord's. England have won the toss and choose to bat.
  • Test match cricket is back after a long break, 133 days to be precise, however, this is not the typical 5-day Test but a 4-day game and it is a clash between the neighbors, England and Ireland in the home of cricket, Lord's. It is a chance for the hosts to prepare for the upcoming all important Ashes. However, it will be interesting to see if they are over their World Cup win. A couple of new names have been included in the XI and some regular ones have been rested. They are still favorites to beat the Irish side who have a chance to prove a point. They have lost both the Test matches that they have played till now but would be eager to get their first win. They will have to play out of their skins if they are to do so. Stay tuned for the toss and teams.

England Vs Ireland Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Ireland on the other hand, will love a wicket here. Can they pick one? We will have to wait to find out.
  • Now then, England have just the one over to play out. It will be 6 nervy balls. They need to come out unscathed.
  • England were excellent in this session. They got their lengths right, got the ball to do a little. Especially Broad and Olly Stone. The two finished with 3 each. Curran took one and Moeen Ali got the last one.
  • A session which England will be mighty pleased with! They have managed to crawl back in the game. Ireland is still ahead but they would surely not be pleased with how they batted in this session. They were just two down when they entered this session but then lost wickets at regular intervals. After Stirling and Balbirnie fell, the middle order failed to contribute a lot. At once, it seemed the lead would not cross 100 but a gritty knock from Kevin O'Brien and contributions from the lower order saw them extend their lead to 122.

England Vs Ireland Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • The target is not a tough one but Ireland will have to bat really well to chase this down. The conditions, by judging after the first ball bowled, seem to be good for bowling. If England get it right, they can surely defend this. An exciting 4th innings awaits. Join us in a while.
  • Mark Adair was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland. Thompson too was good as he picked a three-fer. Murtagh was consistent with his lines and lengths and Rankin too did a decent job.
  • England headed into their second innings trailing by 122 runs. They lost Burns early but Roy and Leach's 145-run stand put England back on track. However, a middle order collapse saw England struggling, with their lead at 126 and 8 wickets down. Handy contributions from Sam Curran and Broad saw them get close to 200. They were hopeful of the last pair adding some runs today morning but that was not to be as Thompson knocked Stone over on the first ball of the day itself.
  • Just the one ball, yes you read it right, just the one ball it has taken Ireland to take the last wicket. 182 is what is Ireland's target and they would head into the break sensing a serious opportunity to get their first Test victory.
  • 77.5 OUT! Bowled! England are bowled out in the first ball off the day! Thompson steams in and bowls a full, inswinging ball on off. It comes back in, Stone looks to drive straight but the ball goes between the gap of bat and pad. It goes onto to demolish the leg pole. England bowled out for 303. Ireland need 182 to win.
  • After a slight delay we are all set to begin the first session of Day 3. Overnight batsmen, Stuart Broad and Olly Stone walk out to resume their innings. Stuart Thompson to bowl the first over of the Day for Ireland.

  • Update 1100 Local (1000 GMT) - Oh no! We do not have a good news to begin with. It is raining at Lord's and the covers are on. We will have a delayed start here. Stay tuned for further updates.
  • Welcome to Day 3 of this one-off Test between England and Ireland. Day 2 was another action packed day as both teams took the lead in the game but in the end it was Ireland who ended the day on top. England batting once again saw a collapse as they found themselves from 171/1 to 248/8. Sam Curran's cameo along with Broad in the end saw England edge past the 170-run mark. This might be the last day of this Test and at this point in time one feels the match is right in the balance. There was rain earlier in the day but the forecast for the day looks good, let's hope that it stays true and we do not have any interruptions in what promises to be another exciting day of Test cricket.
  • ... Day 3, Morning Session ...
  • Now then what is in store for us tomorrow? More rain? An England win or an Ireland win? If the weather stays good, it could well be the last day of this Test match. England lead by 181 at the moment. They would hope they can somehow get past the 200-run mark. Ireland on the other hand, need to get the last wicket quickly and then bat well. Another exciting day of cricket awaits. Join us at 1100 local (1000 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • What a day of cricket we have had! It was Ireland who entered the day as favorites and started off well by sending Burns back early. However, England then fought back courtesy a 145-run stand between Roy and Leach which turned the tide back into England's favour. However, once the two fell, the procession started. England slipped from 171/1 to 248/8. Curran then counter-attacked, played a handy innings, and was well supported by Broad and the two took England close to 300. Sam did fall but Broad and Stone ensure they take England past 300 and they are not yet done.
  • So that is it! It was inevitable once the players went off and it was even more obvious once the rain arrived. STUMPS HAVE BEEN CALLED ON DAY 2!

  • 68.5 Bowled on the body of Curran, he plays this one down towards the leg side.
  • 68.4 DROPPED! Difficult to call it that though. That is a tremendous effort by Porterfield. It is short and around off, Curran drags it towards wide mid on. Porterfield there jumps and has one hand stretched upwards. The ball hits that hand but does not stick in. It goes behind for two. Would have been an absolute blinder.
  • 68.3 Another back of a length ball on off, Curran stands tall and guides it to point.

Once again Woakes flashes at a ball which was not there to be hit. It is just behind a driving length outside off. • 66.1 Flighted on middle, Woakes plays it to the leg side.
  • 65.6 Just short! Another excellent delivery. This lands on a length and on off, Curran looks to defend but due to the angle away, it goes off the outside edge but falls just short of the diving second slip fielder to his right. • Sam Curran is the new man in for England.
  • 65.2 OUT! There goes Joe Root! The dropped catch has not cost a lot. Adair who has been Ireland's best bowler today, has got the big fish. An excellent catch too by Wilson. Also, that wicket means, the last recognized batsman is out of here. 150 now looks difficult. Root takes a few steps ahead and Adair bowls it just ahead of a length and around off. It shapes away. Root looks to drive but the length is not quite there. The outside edge is induced and it goes towards first slip. Wilson dives and takes it. England are effectively 117 for 6.

Moeen has a poke at it and ends up getting a feather on it. It goes straight to Gary Wilson who takes a simple catch. England are technically 6 down for 97. Moeen Ali's poor run of form continues. • ... Day 2, Session 3 ...
  • Ireland on the other hand, suddenly hit the right lines and lengths in the second half of this session. Their bowlers got the ball to swing, especially Adair who has been really impressive. They know if they get a couple more quickly, they would then feel, they have a real chance. A really exciting last session awaits. Join us in a while.
  • What a session this was! 87 runs and 4 wickets in it. The game hangs in the balance as the players make their way in for Tea. It started off though with England having their noses ahead. They entered the session at 122 for 1 and Leach and Roy continued from where they left off in the previous session. They kept scoring freely until Thompson knocked Roy over. Then, Leach fell 8 short of a ton. Denly and Bairstow did not stay at the crease for long and all of a sudden England found themselves in a spot of bother. They lead by only 87 runs though they have the ever reliable skipper, Root, the batters coming in are not in great form. The hosts would hope, the others play around him and Root scores something big.
  • 56.6 Once again short of the man at short leg. On the pads and bowled at pace. Moeen flicks but it comes off the higher part of his bat. It falls short of short leg once again. 209/5

  • 54.4 On top of off, Ali defends it back towards the bowler.

  • 54.1 Back of a length ball on off, Root blocks it off his back foot.
  • The new man in is Moeen Ali. Also, Boyd Rankin is back.
  • 53.6 OUT! Umpire's call it is. Bairstow grabs a pair in this innings. Just like in the first innings, it is the inswinging ball which has outdone him. It is pitching around off and comes back in after pitching.Bairstow looks to defend but plays all over it. The Irish players put a loud and confident appeal. Aleem Dar agrees with him. Bairstow takes it upstairs straightaway. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no involvement of bat. Ball Tracker rolls in later on and shows that the ball was clipping the top of middle and leg. Not the start to the Test summer Bairstow would have wanted. Maybe the gruesome World Cup campaign has taken it's toll on him. England lead by 72, meaning they are half the side down under 100 here. 194/5

  • 52.2 OUT! RUN OUT! Ireland are back in the game! From 171 for 1, England are now 194 for 4. Denly, who has been short of runs has been run out. Surely that is the last way he would have wanted to be dismissed and surely it is the last thing England would have wanted. England are effectively 72 for 4. This is on off, Root works it towards mid-wicket and calls for a run but then throws Denly the dummy who is halfway down the track. Too difficult for Denly to get back now. • We are all set for the action to begin! Rory Burns and Jack Leach to resume their innings. Mark Adair will start the proceedings for Ireland. Here we go...
  • Welcome to Day 2 of this one-off Test between England and Ireland. After a horrific day for the hosts they trail the Irish by 122. The hosts will need to put up a much better display after their horrendous performance on Day 1. The visitors, on the other hand, have a real chance to stun the World Champions and shock the cricketing world with a gigantic win at the home of cricket. The Irish bowlers will be looking to replicate their performance from Day 1. An intense battle awaits us on a hot and sunny day.
  • ... Day 2, Session 1 ...
  • England trail by 122 and they will need to bat well here if they are to avoid an upset. They are surely capable of doing so. Ireland on the other hand, will hope they can replicate their performance of the first innings. 20 wickets fell today! Will the bowlers dominate tomorrow as well or is Day 2 going to be one for the batters? We will have to wait to find out on Thursday 1100 local (1000 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • The hosts elected to bat and were bundled out for just 85 runs. Tim Murtagh was the star with the ball for them as he picked a maiden Test fifer. Many expected the English side to do the same to the Irish. However, the Irish top order showed great determination and at one stage, Ireland seemed like they could take a big first innings lead. However, after Tea, things changed. The English bowlers found their lines and lengths. They kept taking wickets at regular intervals and did not let Ireland run away with the game.
  • England or I should write Jack Leach has negotiated the six balls and England will enter Day 2 unscathed. What a day though of cricket we have had here. Yes, Ireland will be the happier side of the two but England won't be too disappointed after how the day began for them.
  • 0.6 Leach survives! Full on the leg stump line, Leach defends it back to the bowler. That is Stumps on Day 1. 0/0
  • 0.5 On off, Leach defends it off the front foot. There is a huge cheer from the crowd as he gets bat on ball. Last ball of the day coming up.
  • 0.4 Just about survived. Good length ball outside off, Leach goes after it to defend but the ball just about misses the outside edge.
  • 0.3 Once again no movement. It is on the pads, Leach tucks it to square leg. 3 balls remain in the day. Can Leach survive?
  • 0.2 Outside off and no movement on this one. Leach shoulders arms to this one.
  • 0.1 Oh! Good start! Good length ball outside off. It moves away a bit after pitching. Leach looks to defend but misses.

England Vs Ireland Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • So that is it from this game! It ended in a very one-sided manner but, trust me, it was one enjoyable game. In the end, the team which everybody thought would come out on top, did. England now will turn their attention to the all-important Ashes. There are still a few days to go for it though. For now, you can switch tabs and catch all the action from the ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Let me remind you, it is Malinga's last ODI so you do not want to miss it. Until next time, goodbye and take care!
  • Jack Leach has been awarded the MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD for his excellent 92 in England's second innings. He was the top scorer of the game and to add to that, he is not even a regular batsman.
  • It was quite obvious that England were going to put in a better effort with the bat than they did in the first innings. However, the batter who top scored for them was a surprise as it was the nightwatchman Jack Leach. Roy too had a good outing in his second Test innings. When the two were batting, it seemed like they would bat Ireland out of the game but the tourists did really well to fight back and enter the 4th innings on level terms. However, the conditions were one which a bowler would love and England made complete use of it and won the game by a whopping 143 runs.
  • Ireland though will be very disappointed with how this Test match ended having started it off in the best of manners. After being asked to bowl, they toppled England out for just 85. Tim Murtagh was the star as he finished with a fifer. England however, did not let the visitors run away with the game as a combined bowling effort by them only let Ireland take a lead of 122.
  • WOW! That escalated quickly! England have blown away the Ireland batting line-up in just the 15.4 overs. This Test match started with one team being bowled out in one session and has ended that way too. Yes, this was going to be a tough chase but not many would have thought England would win so easily. Just the two bowlers were needed for them. Woakes and Broad. The former took a six-fer and the latter, a four-fer.
  • 15.4 OUT! That is it! Woakes ends the game with the sound of Timber. Fuller ball on leg, Murtagh swings his bat at it but misses. Woakes does not and he disturbs the leg pole. ENGLAND WIN THIS ONE OFF TEST BY 143 RUNS.
  • 15.3 Another short ball. It is around the body this time, Murtagh takes his eyes off it and looks to pull but misses.
  • 15.2 Short ball now. Murtagh goes for the pull but misses.
  • 15.1 In the air but just over. Fuller outside off, Murtagh swings his bat at it. He manages to send it over covers and get a couple.
  • 14.6 Very full outside off, Rankin does well to get bat on ball. 36/9
  • 14.5 Bad from Broad. He bowls this one down the leg side, Rankin lets it be.
  • 14.4 Make that three play and misses in a row. Full outside off, Rankin throws his bat at it but gets nowhere close to the ball.
  • 14.3 Another swing and a miss here. This time Rankin swings his bat with little to no movement. It is outside off, Rankin misses his big heave.
  • 14.2 Fuller on leg, Rankin moves away and swings his bat at it. He misses and the ball goes to the keeper.
  • Boyd Rankin is the last man in.
  • 14.1 OUT! Root with another catch! 4th wicket for Broad and England just a wicket away from wrapping this Test. Broad bowls it fuller around off, it moves away slightly after pitching. This is too good a ball for a number 10. McBrine looks to defend but ends up getting an outside edge to first slip. Joe Root there, takes his 4th catch of the innings.
  • 13.6 Play and a miss! Good length ball outside off, Murtagh swings his bat at it but misses. 36/8
  • Tim Murtagh is the next batsman in.
  • 13.5 OUT! Caught! 5-fer for Woakes and he goes into the honors board at the Home of Cricket. It is pitched on off and the ball goes with the angle, Thompson goes chasing after it with his drive. He gets nothing but a fat outside edge. The ball goes to the right of Root. The English Test skipper moves to that side swiftly and takes his 3rd catch of the game. Woakes takes the ball, raises it up and soaks in all the applause. He now technically becomes the first Englishman to take a 5-fer against Ireland.
  • 13.4 Bouncer! It is around the body, Thompson ducks under it.
  • 13.3 Hit with venom but straight to mid off. Full on off, Thompson hits it right off the meat of the bat but to the man at mid off.
  • 13.2 Full on off, Thompson drives it off the inner half of his bat back towards the bowler.
  • 13.1 FOUR! Thompson won't die without a fight. Woakes bowls it full around off, Stuart smashes it through mid off for a boundary.
  • 12.6 Comes around the wicket and bowls full outside off. This comes in with the angle. McBrine lets it carry to the keeper. 32/7
  • Andy McBrine is the new batsman in.
  • 12.5 OUT! Cleaned 'Em! Broad has the last laugh. He serves three short balls and then goes full. It is around off and nips back in, Adair looks to drive but just like the previous batsmen before him he too leaves a big gap between bat and pad. The ball once again goes between that gap to disturb the off pole. England just 3 wickets away from a win here.
  • 12.4 SIX! One trick too many and Adair has gone blow for blow here. Broad dishes another short ball, Adair this time pulls it off the middle over the mid-wicket fence for a maximum.
  • We will have a slight delay and rightfully so. The physio will be out now to have a look at Adair's helmet. These blows are very dangerous and a slight delay is better than a permanent damage.
  • 12.3 Another nasty blow on the helmet. Broad bangs it short on the body, Adair looks to pull but misses and the ball hits him flush on the helmet.
  • 12.2 Short ball, Adair pulls it to mid-wicket.
  • 12.1 Good shot but for no run. Full around off, Adair plays a good looking cover drive but straight to the man at short cover.
  • 11.6 On middle and leg, Adair flicks it towards mid-wicket and gets a single. 26/6
  • 11.5 On middle and leg, Adair tucks it to mid-wicket.
  • 11.4 Outside off and once again Adair misses his stroke.
  • 11.3 A poor delivery after a long while here. It is on the 4th stump line, Adair swings his bat at it but misses.
  • 11.2 UNPLAYABLE! It starts on off and then tails away after pitching. Adair looks to defend but gets beaten all ends up.
  • 11.1 Away swinger. It is on a length outside off, Adair looks to cut but it goes off the inner half of his bat and pitches on the ground.
  • 10.6 BEATEN! This is angled into the off pole, it pitches and straightens. Thompson looks to defend but is beaten. End of a successful over for England. 25/6
  • 10.5 Adair is off the mark as he works the ball which is on the pads towards fine leg for one.
  • 10.4 Another one on a length and around middle, Adair pushes it to mid on.
  • 10.3 On the off pole, Adair goes back and keeps it out.
  • 10.2 A little too straight this time, Adair works it to short leg.
  • Mark Adair walks out to bat next.
  • 10.1 OUT! Ireland are falling like a pack of cards! Broad gets his second and probably Ireland's last hope, Kevin O'Brien is walking back. Stuart lands it on a length and around off, it jags back in sharply. Kevin O'Brien looks to play at it by staying rooted to his crease. He misses and the ball hits the pads. Broad is already celebrating as he starts appealing and the umpire raises the finger. Kevin O'Brien does not review and rightly so as Hawk Eye shows three reds. England just 4 wickets away now. Still just over 30 minutes to go in this session.
  • 9.6 Brilliant bowling this. Very full, almost a yorker on middle. Thompson does well to get his bat down in time. 24/5
  • 9.5 Outside off on a length, Thompson goes chasing after it but misses.
  • 9.4 Good length ball on off, Thompson defends it off the front foot.
  • Stuart Thompson is the new man in.
  • 9.3 OUT! England manage to overturn the on field umpire's call. Half the side back in the hut for Ireland. Woakes bowls it full and this one comes in to the right-hander. Wilson is done for the pace and swing here. He looks to defend but misses. The ball hits him on his back pad and the English players put in a huge appeal. The umpire though does not agree with him. England players are pretty sure they have their man. Root signals the T. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no involvement of the bat. Ball Tracker rolls in next and it shows three reds. The umpire will have to change his decision and Wilson too is out of here.
  • LBW appeal taken upstairs. Wilson is the man in question. He has not been given out. Let's see if England can overturn this decision.
  • 9.2 Good length ball around off. It moves away after pitching. Wilson looks to defend but misses.
  • Gary Wilson is the next batsman in.
  • 9.1 OUT! Caught! Third wicket for Woakes! He was not getting much movement in the start but now he is making the ball do the talking here. It is on the channel of uncertainty, i.e. very close to the off pole. McCollum too falls for the trap and goes for a push. He ends up getting a thick outside edge. The ball flies to first slip. Root there takes it with relative ease.
  • 8.6 Good length ball but it is on the pads, O'Brien looks to flick but the ball kisses his thigh pad and goes behind. Bairstow dives across to his left and takes it on the up. There is a stifled appeal but nothing from the umpire. 24/3
  • 8.5 Another bumper but this is outside off, Kevin ducks under it easily this time.
  • The physio is out to have a look. In the meantime, the umpires have called for DRINKS! All England after the rain interval. Early wickets was the call for the hour for them and they have got three. Ireland are in big trouble here. They need another 158 and they will have to bat really well to get that. They have Kevin O'Brien and McCollum who is looking solid out there but they need the two to continue. Will we see them fight back or will England continue to dominate?
  • 8.4 Ouch! That is a nasty blow! Broad bends his back and bowls short. It is on middle and leg, Kevin looks to duck but is lat in it. The ball hits him flush on the back of his helmet. Broad has a word with him to check if he is fine. O'Brien gives a thumbs up to it but a mandatory helmet check will be done.
  • 8.3 FOUR! Edgy but all along the ground. Full on off, Kevin looks to play it straight but ends up getting a thick outside edge which skews all along the ground through backward point for a boundary.
  • 8.2 On the pads, McCollum flicks it to mid-wicket.
  • 8.1 Play and a miss! England creating bucket loads of doubt in the batsman's mind here. This starts on off and moves away. McCollum goes chasing after it but luckily does not edge it.
  • 7.6 Just short of first slip. Fuller ball around off, the line and length is perfect to trouble the batter. It does trouble Kevin. He looks to defend but ends up playing inside the line. Luckily for O'Brien it falls short of first slip. 19/3
  • 7.5 Fuller on off, O'Brien defends it off the front foot.
  • 7.4 Good length ball on middle, O'Brien tucks it to mid-wicket.
  • Kevin O'Brien walks out to bat next.
  • 7.3 OUT! Bowled! Stirling goes for a duck. This is just world class from Woakes. The last ball was slightly short and moved away. This time he bowls it full and nips it back in. It is pitched around off and comes in, Stirling looks to play it straight but leaves a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball goes right through that gate and disturbs the stumps. Ireland have their back against the wall now. England needed early wickets they have got 3 here.
  • 7.2 Peach, absolute peach! Woakes bowls it on a length around off, it moves away slightly after pitching. Stirling looks to defend but the away swing beats him.
  • 7.1 On middle, McCollum tucks it to square leg for a single.
  • Paul Stirling is the new batsman in.
  • 6.6 OUT! Caught! This is champion stuff from Broad. Bowls two short ones to Balbirnie and now bowls a brilliant good length ball. It is pitched on off and moves away. It is perfectly in the line of uncertainty. Balbirnie was in two minds, whether to leave or defend. He goes with the latter option and ends up getting a thick outside edge. It goes straight to Root at first slip who takes a very comfortable catch. Big wicket for England as Balbirnie was the best batter in the first innings. 18/2
  • 6.5 Bouncer! Broad peppering Balbirnie with some short stuff here. This time it is on middle, Andy learns from his previous mistime hook and ducks under it.
  • 6.4 Full on off and middle, McCollum glances it off the inner half of his bat towards mid-wicket for one.
  • 6.3 In the air...but in no man's land. Short ball bowled at 86 mph. It is on the body, Balbirnie is rushed to play his pull and he gets very little to no timing on it. Luckily for him it falls well short of the man at deep square leg.
  • 6.2 Squared him up. Good length ball bowled at 87 mph. The ball though keeps slightly low after pitching. Balbirnie does well to get his bat down in time.
  • 6.1 On middle and leg, McCollum flicks it to the on side and gets a single.
  • 5.6 Good bounce and carry on this one. Woakes bowls it quick and slightly short. It pitches outside off and comes back in. Balbirnie shows his confidence and leaves it alone. This was a proper Test match ball and proper Test match leave by the batsman. 15/1
  • 5.5 Outside off on a length, Balbirnie is aware of his off stump and leaves it alone.
  • 5.4 Oh! Soft hands save him there. Good length ball around off, Balbirnie plays it late and with soft hands. He gets an outside edge but that goes to third slip on a bounce.
  • 5.3 Another ball outside off, Balbirnie has nothing to do with it and leaves it alone.
  • 5.2 Outside off, Balbirnie watches it till the end and leaves it alone.
  • 5.1 FOUR! The best batsman of the first innings is off the mark with a glorious boundary straightaway. Woakes bowls it full on middle and leg, Balbirnie gets on his front foot and drives it beautifully through mid on for a boundary.
  • 4.6 Huge appeal for LBW but turned down by the umpire. Height seems to be an issue there. Good length ball pitching around off, it comes in after pitching. McCollum looks to defend but misses. The ball hits him on the thigh of his back leg. England players put in a big appeal but it is turned down by Aleem Dar. They think about the review but opt against it. 11/1
  • This session is a one and half hour session as Lunch will be taken at 1400 local.
  • 4.5 Outside off, McCollum leaves it alone.
  • 4.4 Late swing on this one. It is outside off and moves just a bit. McCollum shoulders arms to it. The ball moves more once it goes past the stumps.
  • 4.3 On off, McCollum defends it off the front foot.
  • 4.2 Oh! Close! Good length ball outside off, it comes back in after pitching. James looks to defend but gets a feather on it onto his pads.
  • 4.1 Fuller on off, McCollum defends it off the front foot.
  • Andy Balbirnie is the new man in. He scored a half ton in the first innings. Something of the same is what Ireland will be hoping.
  • 3.6 OUT! Brilliant catch from Bairstow! Woakes corrects his line and pitches it on off and middle. Chris finally manages to move the ball off the deck. Porterfield looks to defend but the away movement sees the ball kiss his outside edge. It goes low to the left of Bairstow behind the stumps. Jonny dives to that side quickly and takes a good low catch. This is the thing with Woakes, if he gets a ball right it usually ends up being converted into a wicket. Ireland have lost their skipper early here. This Test match is evenly poised here. 11/1
  • 3.5 Good length ball on off, Porterfield defends it with a straight bat.
  • 3.4 Outside off, WP has nothing to do with it.
  • 3.3 Again the ball comes straight. It is on off, Porterfield defends it off the front foot. Woakes struggling to find any movement here.
  • 3.2 No swing on this one. It is outside off on a length, Porterfield has a poke at it but misses.
  • 3.1 Some away movement for Woakes. Fuller outside off, Porterfield leaves it alone.
  • 2.6 FOUR! Driven beautifully! Broad bowls it full around off, James gets on his front foot and creams his drive through covers for a boundary. 11/0
  • 2.5 Appeal for LBW but turned down by the umpire. Inswinging ball. It is bowled on a length. It pitches on off and comes in. McCollum looks to defend but gets beaten. The ball hits him over his knee roll. There is a huge appeal but the umpire is unmoved. Joe Root, Bairstow and Broad think about the review but don't take it. It looked to be missing the leg pole and Ball Tracker confirms that.
  • Pads and helmet coming out. A short leg coming in place.
  • 2.4 On a good length on middle, McCollum looks to flick but misses it and gets hit on the thigh pad.
  • 2.3 Bowls it down the leg side, Porterfield looks to flick but misses it. It goes to Bairstow where he fumbles and concedes a bye. The batsmen cross ends.
  • 2.2 Taken but off the pads! Brilliant from Broad. He lands this on middle and then gets it to straighten. Porterfield defends inside the line and gets beaten. It goes off the thigh pad to the second slip fielder. An appeal but the umpire shakes his head.
  • 2.1 BEATEN! Sharp outswing on this one. Broad bowls it on a good length and outside off, Porterfield plays inside the line but misses it due to the outward movement on this one.
  • 1.6 A leg bye to end! This is on the pads, Porterfield looks to flick but misses. It hits the pads and rolls on the leg side. A leg bye taken. 6/0
  • 1.5 Swing and a miss! Short and outside off, Porterfield looks to pull it across the line but misses.
  • 1.4 Brilliant fielding! Saves for two for his side! This is fuller and around off, Porterfield hits it through covers. The fielder from point hares after it. He seems to have pushed it back in. The mid off fielder does the mopping up job. The batsmen take two but the umpire initially signals a boundary. They go upstairs to check and replays show that the fielder has done brilliantly.
  • 1.3 Goes back to bowling length and outside off, Porterfield shoulders arms to this one.
  • 1.2 Ireland are underway! Woakes goes very full and on the pads, there is no swing on offer for him. McCollum works it wide of mid on and takes three.
  • The players are back out there and it is time for some action now! The openers will resume their innings and Chris Woakes will continue his over.
  • Update - 1213 local - Good news folks! The rain has stopped, the covers are coming off and play is set to restart at 1230 local, weather permitting that is.
  • Not again please! The drizzles have got slightly heavier so the umpires have called for the covers and the players are out of the field. Also, more covers coming on, not a good sign this. The good news is the forecast is not that bad for the day so let's hope that it is not a big delay.
  • 1.1 Woakes starts with a good length ball on off. It comes in just a hint, McCollum tucks it with the swing towards mid-wicket.
  • It has started to drizzle again. But no stop as of now and Chris Woakes will partner Broad from the other end.
  • 0.6 Full on off, Porterfield taps it back to the bowler. 0/0
  • 0.5 Slightly less movement on this one. On the 4th stump line, Porterfield lets it carry to the keeper.
  • 0.4 Oh! This was not far away from the outside edge. Good length ball outside off. It comes in after pitching, Porterfield looks to defend but then pulls his back inside the line. A lot of ohhs and ahhs from the English players.
  • 0.3 Full and nipping in on off, Porterfield flicks it to mid-wicket.
  • 0.2 Another good ball. This is on a length outside off, this too comes back in. Porterfield once again leaves it alone.
  • 0.1 Excellent ball to begin with. Broad comes around the wicket and pitches it outside off. It comes in nicely with the angle. Porterfield though is aware of his off stump and leaves it alone.
