  • 240 is not a big target and Australia will fancy themselves to chase this down. Sri Lanka will need to bowl really well if they are to defend this. Join us for the chase in a while.
  • The Australian bowling was nice and disciplined. Starc and Cummins started off really well. Then Maxwell, Lyon and Zampa continued the good work. Kane Richardson was the only bowler who was not upto the mark today. Overall though, Australia will be happy with their effort.
  • So Sri Lanka have crawled their way to 239! Not sure if they will be happy with their effort especially after electing to bat first. They though got off to a sedate but decent start. However, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals which always kept them behind the 8-ball game. Thirimanne played as the anchor but he needed to continue after getting to his half ton. It was Dhananjaya's innings which gave them the much-needed impetus and also, it was courtesy him that the Lankan bowlers have something to bowl at.
  • 49.6 Low full toss outside off, Siriwardana carves it through point. The batsmen get two runs. 7 runs have come from the over. SRI LANKA FINISH WITH 239/8 IN THEIR 50 OVERS.
  • 49.5 Full on middle, Lakmal drives it to long on. The batsmen change ends.
  • 49.4 BEATEN! Short delivery, Lakmal looks to pull but misses it.
  • 49.3 Short delivery outside off, Lakmal pulls it towards Cummins who goes for the catch but it fell just short of Cummins.
  • 49.2 FOUR! Nice shot and a much-needed boundary. Length delivery on middle, Lakmal lofts it over mid-wicket for a boundary.
  • 49.1 Bowls a wide yorker outside off, Lakmal looks to chase that delivery but misses it.
  • 48.6 Fuller in length, Milinda flicks it to mid-wicket for a couple. And a wicket finally for Starc in this over. 232/8
  • 48.5 Fuller length on the pads, Milinda looks to flick but gets an inside edge onto his pads.
  • Milinda Siriwardana is the new batsman in.
  • 48.4 OUT! BOWLED 'EM! You miss, I hit stuff. Starc keeps it full and attacks the stumps. Dhananjaya looks to go over the off side by making room but misses to see the ball hit the leg pole. A good innings though from him. He provided the much-needed impetus to the Lankan innings but they needed him to stay out there till the end.
  • 48.3 The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. They pick up a single.

  • Suranga Lakmal is the next man in.
  • 47.1 OUT! Perera holes out! Cummins strikes on the first ball of his new spell. Bowls it short and on the body of Perera. He goes for the pull but since it was the longer part of the ground, he needed to get a lot behind it. Does not do so and it is an easy catch for Maxwell at deep mid-wicket. A good partnership for the Lankans comes to an end but they needed this to continue.

Perera walks upto his partner and has a chat but then keeps on walking. Another budding partnership comes to an end. It was a good decision not to review as replay later on show that it was plumb in front.
  • 16.1 Tosses it up on middle, Perera works it to the left of the bowler. Maxwell gets there quickly and stops the single.
  • DRINKS BREAK! Australia have bowled well and picked up a solitary wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne. They would look to pick more wickets and put pressure on Sri Lanka.
  • 15.6 Full on off, Perera hits it over covers. Usman Khawaja chases it and does well to stop it. The batsmen get three runs. Good running between the wickets. 6 runs have come from the over and 10 runs have come from the last two. 71/1

  • 11.6 On a good length on off, it is kept out. Another good over for the Lankans. 57/1
  • 11.5 This is angled away from the leg stump, the batter looks to work it on the leg side but due to the angle, he gets a soft leading edge to covers.
  • 11.4 This is wider outside off, Thirimanne once again makes a leave.
  • 11.3 Good length outside off, it is left alone.

  • 10.5 A huge shout for LBW which has been turned down and run out opportunity also goes abegging. First, Maxwell fires it on the pads, Perera looks to sweep but gets an inside edge onto the pads. It rolls towards the leg side. Perera is off for a run but his partner sends him back. The keeper goes for the ball, he picks it up and instead of underarming it to Smith he looks for a direct hit but misses. It hits Smith's boot and then goes towards cover. The batsman makes it back. • 9.6 Length delivery close to off stump. Perera knows his off stump and lets the ball go through for the keeper to do the rest. 44/1
  • Kusal Perera is the new batsman in.
  • 9.5 OUT! There is something on Ultra Edge and the on-field call has to be overturned. That is why the Australians were so confident. Richardson draws first blood and breaks the opening stand just as the runs started to come for Lanka. He bowls it short and it is angling away from the batsman. Karunaratne looks to pull but takes his eyes off the ball. It goes to Carey who takes it and appeals. The umpire shakes his head though. Australia review. Replays roll in and they show there is a top edge. Excellent review!

  • 7.5 FOUR! Lucky boundary! Australia had just moved the first slip to the second slip position and the ball goes from the former position. Very fortunate there was the batter. Length and around off, Thirimanne looks to defend but the ball goes off the outside edge and through first slip for a boundary. Consecutive boundaries.
  • 7.4 FOUR! Lovely shot! Shorter in length and around off, Thirimanne stands tall and punches it through covers for a boundary.

  • 6.5 RUN OUT CHANCE! MISSED! On a length on off, Karunaratne defends it towards off side and wants the single but Thirimanne is not at all interested. Karunaratne was halfway down the track. Cummins gets to the ball quickly and has a shy at the keeper's end but misses it. It goes towards fine leg. In the end the batsmen manage to take the single. Cummins was in a hurry to get rid of the ball there and was also off balance. He could have taken a little more time there. Karunaratne was goner had the bowler hit.

  • 4.4 On a good length on off, Karunaratne defends it off the front foot.
  • 4.3 NOT OUT! Karunaratne is in! The interesting thing here though was, the LED bails lit up even before the ball hit the stumps as Carey's glove touched it first. Since it did not fall though, it would have still been out if Dimuth was short. Length and into the pads, DK flicks it through backward square leg. They take one and then go for the second. The fielder throws it to the keeper, at first it seemed like a direct hit and the umpire takes it upstairs to check. Replays roll in and they show that it was Carey's gloves which lit up the bails but it did not fall off. He then collected and dislodged it but Dimuth was in.

  • WEATHER - Some grey clouds overhead. The forecast is for overcast skies but thankfully, NO RAIN. Let us hope it stays that way.
  • We are into the second round of the warm-up stage and it is Australia versus Sri Lanka at Southampton. Both sides enter this game with contrasting results - Australia getting the better of powerhouse England while Sri Lanka being mauled by the Proteas. Aaron Finch was not happy with the fielding so we know what Australia are looking at for improvement. Sri Lanka, well, need some kind of confidence to begin with. They have not been on any kind of winning run and a victory or even a good performance here might be a start for a turnaround.

  • The Sri Lankan bowling was not that bad. The pacers hit the right lines and lengths to begin with. The spinners too did a decent job. They just did not have enough runs to play with.
  • Another win for the Australians and they have done so quite easily this time. After a very good bowling performance from their side, they restricted Sri Lanka to a total which was always below par. In reply, they did lose Finch early but then Marsh and Khawaja steadied the ship. The latter then continued with Maxwell first and then Stoinis to take them closer to the victory. Usman though could not stay there till the end as he departed 11 short of a ton. Carey and Cummins though ensured there were no more wickets to fall and took Australia over the line.
