  • Sri Lanka will be disappointed. That is an understatement. After surviving the opening hour, the batsmen simply threw it away and then the rest were not patient enough. Dickwella played some shots but that only lent some respectability to the total. The night session will provide plenty of movement, so the Lankan quicks will be hoping to get 4-5 wickets before Stumps. Stay tuned...
  • It was a total team effort from the Aussie quicks. They struggled with their lengths in the first hour of the morning, going too full, searching for swing when there was none, but then they hit their straps by adjusting well. Towards the end of the second session, they found some swing which was helpful, especially for Starc, who is going through a torrid period.
  • Just 6.4 overs needed for the Aussies after the Dinner break to dismantle the Lankan innings. A terrific bowling performance to say the least but what will please Australia is that the man guns - Starc, Cummins and Lyon did not have to do too much. Yes, Cummins did pick up 4 but the talk of the town will be the debutant Jhye Richardson, who rocked the middle order.
  • 56.4 OUT! Chameera is the last man dismissed. Cummins gets his 4th of the innings. Once again shorter in length, Chameera tries to pull that one away but gets a top edge. The ball goes high in the air and to the fielder at gully. Kurtis Patterson there takes his second catch in the same over. Dushmantha Chameera's resilient innings comes to an end. Scored no runs but gave plenty of support to Dickwella in their 38-run stand. SRI LANKA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 144.
  • 56.3 Bouncer. Dushmantha does well to duck underneath it.
  • Lahiru Kumara is the last batsman in for Sri Lanka.
  • 56.2 OUT! Dickwella falls at last. The short delivery does the trick. Around middle and leg, Niroshan looks to pull but it gets big on him. It lobs towards deep mid-wicket where Kurtis Patterson takes a comfortable catch. Brilliant innings under pressure. Australia are just one wicket away from wrapping up the innings. Cummins gets his third.
  • 56.1 Bowls a bouncer down leg, Dickwella does well to duck under it.
  • 55.6 Tossed up on middle, Chameera keeps it out. 144/8
  • 55.5 Flighted delivery on middle, Chameera blocks it off his back foot.
  • 55.4 Floated on off, Dushmantha defends off the front foot.
  • 55.3 Flighted delivery on middle, Dickwella sweeps it towards square leg for a single.
  • 55.2 Floated on middle, Niroshan comes down the track and hits it over covers. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • 55.1 Tossed up on middle, Dickwella plays a reverse sweep to point.
  • 54.6 Yes he can. Beautiful delivery by Cummins to finish off the over. It is full outside off, the ball moves away just a bit after pitching. Chameera tries to defend but the ball goes past the outside edge. 141/8
  • 54.5 Bouncer! Chameera ducks underneath it. Can he survive the last ball?
  • 54.4 Once again back off a length, Niroshan this time pulls it in a controlled manner towards fine leg for a single.
  • 54.3 In the air but safe. Shorter on length, Dickwella pulls it. It hits high on his bat but has enough on it to go over the in-field. The ball falls in no mans land and Niroshan gets a couple from it.
  • 54.2 Length delivery outside off, Niroshan tries to cut it but the ball goes over his bat.
  • 54.1 FOUR! Handy runs for Sri Lanka. Bouncer by Cummins, Dickwella goes for the pull but gets a top edge. Luckily for him the ball goes wide of the fine leg fielder and into the fence for a boundary.
  • 53.6 Floated on middle, Dushmantha defends off the back foot. 134/8
  • 53.5 Tossed up on middle, Dushmantha defends off the front foot.

  • 52.5 Good length delivery outside off again, Dickwella looks to cut but gets beaten on this one.
  • 52.4 Outside off, Niroshan makes room and looks to cut but misses it.
  • 52.3 Short of a length delivery again, Dickwella pulls it over mid-wicket. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • 52.2 Short of a length delivery, Niroshan pulls it to square leg.
  • 52.1 Length delivery on middle, Dickwella plays a paddle sweep to the leg side.
  • 51.6 Ends the over by getting right behind the delivery and blocking it. 132/8
  • 51.5 Tossed up off spinner on off, Chameera defends it off his front foot.
  • 51.4 Shorter in length around off, Chameera does well to block that one.
  • 51.3 Full on middle, Dickwella sweeps it away on the on side for a single.
  • 51.2 FOUR! Fifty for Niroshan Dickwella. 11th Test fifty for him. First against Australia. Good shot. Flighted delivery on middle, Dickwella sweeps it through square leg. The fielder dives but in vain and it is a boundary. Great innings under pressure.
  • 51.1 Tossed up on middle, Niroshan sweeps it to the leg side.
  • Nathan Lyon back on.
  • 50.6 Length delivery on off, Dickwella guides it towards third man for a single. 127/8
  • 50.5 Good length delivery outside off, the keeper-batsman looks to cut but gets beaten on this one.
  • 50.4 FOUR! Good shot. Short outside off, Dickwella makes room and cuts it over point for a boundary.
  • 50.3 BEATEN! Good length delivery outside off, Niroshan looks to cut but loses his balance in the process and misses it.
  • 50.2 Length delivery on middle, Dickwella looks to pull but gets an inside edge to the leg side.
  • 50.1 Outside off, Dickwella leaves it alone.
  • Welcome back for the last session. The players and umpires are out in the middle. Niroshan Dickwella and Dushmantha Chameera will resume their innings. Pat Cummins will start the proceedings.
  • ... Day 1, Session 3 ...
  • Australia will want to echo what Marcus Harris said and will wrap this up quickly. They will enjoy their supper for now. Join us after the break.
  • Neroli Meadows is having a chat with Marcus Harris. The southpaw is happy with the way things are going. States that the Australian team had discussed in the dressing room to bowl in the right areas and hope that they finish off the job after the break. On Jhye Richardson, he admits that Jhye was a bit nervous but with time those nerves settled down. On batting under lights, Marcus is not too perturbed and is eager to strut his stuff when the chance comes.
  • Starc has been better in his last spell. Got the ball in the right areas and earned his 200th Test wicket. The skipper will hope he cleans up the tail. Richardson has been marvelous. Ran through the middle order with Cummins and it won't be long before the hosts come out to bat.
  • Australia's session. By far. After taking three wickets in the first one they have come out and taken 5 in this period. Bowled at the right lengths and kept beating the outside edges of the Lankan players. Just a couple of batsmen got to the double figures and that speaks volumes. Dickwella is still out there and the Asian side will hope he adds as many runs as possible to give the bowlers something to bowl at.
  • 49.6 Good length delivery outside off, Chameera looks to defend but gets beaten on this one. Big over for Sri Lanka. THAT IS DINNER ON DAY 1. 122/8
  • 49.5 What a delivery by Starc. Bowls a yorker on middle, Dickwella manages to dig it out and gets an inside edge. It goes towards fine leg for a single.
  • 49.4 Length delivery on off, Niroshan plays it to point.
  • 49.3 SIX! Fine improvisation from Niroshan Dickwella. Length delivery on middle, Dickwella gets on one knee and scoops it over Tim Paine for a biggie.
  • 49.2 Full outside off, Dickwella makes room and plays it uppishly wide of point. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • 49.1 FOUR! Amazing shot. Full on off, Dickwella makes room to the leg side and lofts it over covers for a boundary.
  • 48.6 Chameera survives. Back of a length ball outside off, Chameera sways away from it. 109/8
  • 48.5 Tries the similar shot again. This time connects but almost gives it to the man at short mid-wicket. Pulls it away from him and takes the run.
  • 48.4 Length outside off, Dickwella tries to pull it fine but fails.
  • 48.3 On middle and leg, ND plays it through mid-wicket and comes back for the second.
  • 48.2 Length ball aimed on middle, Niroshan gives himself room but blocks it from hitting the stumps.
  • 48.1 Dickwella trying to be cheeky. Gets into position early and tries to scoop this over the keeper but fails.
  • 47.6 NOT OUT. Nothing on the Hawk Eye. Nothing on Snicko. My ears are ringing. Full and outside off, Chameera looked to defend but the ball whizzed past the outside edge. Paine was not all that confident but Starc pretty much was. However, umpire Erasmus was unmoved. The skipper went for the review as the slip cordon heard a noise(nice...at least someone else heard the noise apart from me) but to their dismay, technology did not assist them. 106/8
  • Australia have taken a review for caught behind. Paine and co. think Chameera has edged it. Let's find out.
  • 47.5 Another edge but lucky this time. On a good length around off, Chameera looks to defend but is squared up by the late movement. An outside edge is induced but this time the ball does not carry to gully. Good diving stop too.
  • Dushmantha Chameera is in at no. 10.
  • 47.4 OUT! Dilruwan Perera departs as well! Sri Lanka are folding up now. Starc has his tail up and is wrapping the Lankan one now. Wonderful delivery. On a fuller length outside off, Perera looks to drive but there is some late outswing. Hence, he gets a thick outside edge towards third slip where Marnus Labuschagne takes another one. His third.
  • 47.3 Back of a length ball aimed into the body of Dickwella who tucks it away on the leg side and changes ends.
  • 47.2 Length ball outside off, another soft edge towards the point region.
  • 47.1 Fuller ball outside off, Dickwella gets a bottom edge which falls short of the slip cordon.
  • 46.6 Outside off, Perera lets it go. Just three runs off the over. 105/7
  • 46.5 On off, Perera defends off the front foot.
  • 46.4 On off, Perera taps it to point.
  • 46.3 Good length delivery on off, Dilruwan defends off the back foot.
  • 46.2 Full on off, Niroshan drives it through covers. The fielder chases it and dives to stop before the ropes. The batsmen get three runs. Good running between the wickets.
  • 46.1 Outside off, Dickwella leaves it alone.
  • Jhye Richardson is back. 12-5-20-3 so far.
  • 45.6 The batsman was beaten and missed the line of the delivery. 102/7
  • 45.5 Good length delivery on off, Perera defends off the back foot.
  • Interesting. Dilruwan Perera returns to bat.
  • 45.4 OUT! Suranga Lakmal departs! Mitchell Starc gets his first wicket. 200th wicket for him. Good delivery from Starc. Full on off, Lakmal looks to defend but the ball moves away late. The batsman gets an outside edge towards third slip where Marnus Labuschagne takes a very good catch inches above the ground. Sri Lanka are seven down.
  • 45.3 FOUR! 100 up for Sri Lanka. Good cricketing shot. Short outside off, Lakmal cuts it through point for a boundary.
  • 45.2 Bowls it down the leg side, Lakmal looks to flick but misses it.
  • 45.1 On the pads, Dickwella flicks it to deep square leg. All fielders on the boundary now as they expect him to go big. He takes one to give Lakmal the strike.
  • 44.6 At 139.5 on middle stump, Dickwella turns it towards mid-wicket to retain the strike for the next over. 97/6
  • 44.5 Outside off, Dickwella leaves it alone.
  • 44.4 On the pads, Lakmal flicks it through mid-wicket and gets three runs for it. Quick hands from him.
  • Suranga Lakmal is forced to come in now, replacing Perera.
  • This is not good news. DILRUWAN IS WALKING OFF, RETIRED HURT. The way he was feeling while holding his bat, didn't seem like he would wish to bat. Sri Lanka would be more worried with his bowling prospects. He is a key bowler for them.
  • 44.3 OUCH! Right on the thumb! Oh dear... Dilruwan is in too much pain. His bat has been thrown on the ground and he himself now is on his haunches. What a nasty blow from Cummins. He bowls a quick delivery, short in length, right on middle and leg. Perera looks to defend but the ball kicks off the surface and hits him hard on the thumb due to the pace of the delivery. It was bowled at 140.9 kph. It is also his bowling arm. The ball lobs off the glove and Marcus Harris at short leg tries to go for the catch but cannot get there.
  • Dilruwan is by no means comfortable. It is his thumb. That too, on his bowling hand - the right one. Oh dear, it is not the greatest of welcomes to the 'Gabba by Patrick. This is fast, fiery bowling. Dilruwan is getting his first two fingers taped on his right hand. He is trying to grip his bat and play but he is not ready yet. There is a long discussion going on.
  • 44.2 Good length delivery outside off, Dilruwan looks to drive but gets beaten on this one.
  • 44.1 Outside off, Perera lets it go.
  • DRINKS! The second one of the session. Will Sri Lanka survive till the last session? The way they are playing, doesn't look like it. The Aussie pacers have been superb in this session.
  • 43.6 Angles this into the legs of Dickwella who tries flicking it but fails. 93/6
  • 43.5 Pushed to the cover region by Perera. One run added to the total.
  • 43.4 Defended off the back foot by Dilruwan.
  • 43.3 Edge again and short of Marnus again. Encouraging stuff from Starc. Fuller in length on that fourth stump channel. Perera gets an outside edge towards the third slip.
  • 43.2 Does not carry! Length on off, shapes away from Perera who gets an outside edge to Labuschagne at third slip. Marnus dives forward but the ball falls just short.
  • 43.1 Full on middle and leg, Dickwella jams it out to mid on and gives his partner the strike.
  • 42.6 Another peach to end. Length outside off, Perera hangs his bat out and stays inside his crease. The ball goes through to the keeper. 91/6
  • 42.5 Beauty first up! Length outside off, Perera offers a shot but cannot get to the pitch of it.
  • The next man in is Dilruwan Perera.
  • 42.4 OUT! Take a bow, Pat! Was making Silva play and miss for some time now and gets his outside edge eventually. On a good length outside off, Silva with no feet movement pokes at it and gets an outside edge. Paine at the back takes another one and Sri Lanka lose another one. That's the sixth wicket before the score reaches 100 and are in big trouble.
  • 42.3 Outside off, the batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 42.2 Bouncer! Silva ducks under the bouncer at the last moment.
  • 42.1 RUN OUT CHANCE! Back of a length ball outside off, Dickwella just taps it with soft hands near the pitch and sets off for the run. Cummins gets to the ball and has a shy at the striker's end but does not hit the stumps. Had he hit, Roshen was no way near the picture.
  • 41.6 Full and on off, just pushed to the mid off region. 90/5
  • 41.5 Better from Silva. Outside off, Silva lets it go.
  • 41.4 Nice. Full and similar to the previous ball. Roshen is tentative as he hangs his bat out and the ball goes past his outside edge.
  • 41.3 Full and on the off pole. Silva gets his bat down and defends it.
  • 41.2 Fuller outside off, left alone.
  • 41.1 Squares him up straight up. On a good length on middle, Silva gets an outside edge towards the off side.
  • Change of ends for Mitchell Starc.
  • 40.6 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 90/5
  • 40.5 Closer to the stumps, Dickwella taps it to the off side.
  • 40.4 Picks the seam and leaves this one outside off.
  • 40.3 Interesting leave. Length ball on off, comes back into Dickwella who thinks it will go away from him. Gets hit on his pads but height the issue here.
  • 40.2 A bit short on middle and leg, Dickwella looks to upper cut it but fails to get any contact.
  • 40.1 Length ball outside off, Dickwella leaves it alone.
  • 39.6 Flighted delivery on middle, Dickwella sweeps it towards square leg for a single. 90/5
  • 39.5 Outside off, Niroshan leaves it alone.
  • 39.4 Floated on off, Dickwella looks to defend but gets a bottom edge on this one.
  • 39.3 Floated on off, Niroshan keeps it out.
  • 39.2 BEATEN! Tossed up on off, Dickwella looks to defend but misses it.
  • 39.1 FOUR! Good shot. Tossed up on leg, Dickwella sweeps it towards fine leg. Mitchell Starc was stationed at short fine leg. He puts in a dive but it goes through him for a boundary.
  • 38.6 Outside off, Silva thinks of playing at it and then almost edges it back to the keeper. 85/5
  • 38.5 Pushed to the cover region by Roshen.
  • 38.4 Silva shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 38.3 On middle and leg, Dickwella tucks it away fine to the leg side for one.
  • 38.2 BEAUTY! Length ball outside off. Moves away from Dickwella who jumps to poke at it but is beaten by pace and bounce.
  • 38.1 Comes in from round the wicket and lands it around off, Dickwella hops a tad and bunts it down.
  • 37.6 Full on off, Roshen drives it to covers. 84/5
  • 37.5 Tossed up outside off, Roshen offers no shot and gets hit on the pads.
  • 37.4 Floated on middle, Silva keeps it out.
  • 37.3 DROPPED! Brilliant effort from Travis Head! Flighted delivery on middle, Dickwella plays a reverse sweep uppishly towards backward point where Travis Head moves to his left, then jumps and stretches his left hand and gets a hand to it. It was a very tough chance for him. The batsmen pick up a single.
  • 37.2 Tossed up on middle, Roshen comes down the track and hits it towards mid-wicket for a single.
  • 37.1 Floated on middle, Roshen defends off the front foot.
  • 36.6 BEATEN! Good shape on this one. Outside off, Niroshan looks to defend but misses it. 82/5
  • 36.5 On off, Dickwella looks to defend but again gets an outside edge towards third slip.
  • 36.4 Good length delivery on off, Dickwella looks to defend but gets an outside edge past third slip. It goes towards third man. The batsmen get two runs. Dickwella does not want to miss out on scoring opportunities.
  • 36.3 Outside off, Dickwella leaves it alone.
  • 36.2 FOUR! Beautiful shot. Full on off, half volley from Cummins, Dickwella drives it through mid off past the fielder and the ball runs away to the fence. A boundary results.
  • 36.1 Full on off, Dickwella plays it to point.
  • Pat Cummins replaces Jhye Richardson.
  • DRINKS! Good period of cricket for Australia. They have got two crucial wickets in the form of Kusal Mendis and Dananjaya de Silva.
  • 35.6 Tossed up on middle, Roshen defends off the back foot. 76/5
  • 35.5 Floated on off, Niroshan looks to defend but gets an outside edge towards third man. The fielder chases it and stops it comfortably. The batsmen get three runs. Good running between the wickets.

  • 32.5 Slightly wide off the off pole. Dickwella is happy to leave it alone.
  • 32.4 Outside off, Dickwella lets it go.
  • Niroshan Dickwella is the new batsman in.
  • 32.3 OUT! EDGE AND TAKEN! Jhye Richardson at it again. Third wicket for him and the fifth for Australia. What a start he is having. Fuller ball around off, draws Dhananjaya into the drive and gets his outside edge. Paine behind takes a simple catch. Wonderful stuff from Richardson. Pinned Dhananjaya back from the last three overs and now gets his wicket with a full ball. Sri Lanka in trouble as half their side is back in the hut.

Mendis looked to defend but get beaten as he just went to turn the bat face. The ball goes on to make an ugly sound as it crashes into top of middle and off. Sri Lanka lose their fourth wicket and Jhye strikes in the first over post the break.

  • 26.1 Length delivery on off, Mendis plays it to mid off.
  • We are back for the second session. Mendis and Silva will continue from where they left. Jhye Richardson will bowl the first over after the break. Three slips in place for him.
  • ... Day 1, Session 2 ...
  • Jhye Richardson was very good in his debut. Got his first Test wicket and kept on troubling the Sri Lankan batsmen. Starc has got the odd ball to talk but not consistent enough while Lyon is getting good purchase already. At 58/3, Australia know they have the upper hand and will not want to let this slip. Join us back after the break.
  • A fighting session for both sides. Sri Lanka were patient at the start and did play well but couldn't resist their shots after a period of time. The two openers did struggle against the new ball but made sure they didn't throw their wickets away in that duration. Thirimanne and Chandimal then found their edges to the cordon while Karunaratne nicked one to Paine as time went by. Mendis is looking good and will hope Silva sticks with him for some time.
  • 25.6 Silva gets behind this one and defends it out. THAT WILL BE TEA ON DAY 1. 58/3
  • 25.5 Quicker one on middle, turned away to the leg side.
  • 25.4 Given air on off, bunted out. Good stuff from Lyon.
  • 25.3 Fuller ball in line of the stumps, played back to Lyon.

  • 10.2 OUT! First wicket of the game and it falls to Cummins. Full again and makes Thirimanne drive. Just like the last ball Lahiru goes after it. Nothing on the ball, it just straightens and takes the outside edge of the bat. Comes at a good height to Labuschagne who makes no mistake at third slip. Thirimanne never looked settled and now has to walk back. Not the best of return to Test cricket for him. • 7.2 On the pads, flicked away by Dimuth towards square leg for one.
  • 7.1 Full and wide outside off, too far to make Karunaratne play at it.

  • 4.6 NOT OUT! WHAT A REVIEW! Excellent! Looked like that would have gone on to clip the leg stump but Hawk Eye has the last say. Length ball on middle and leg. It goes on to hit the edge of Thirimanne's pads who misses his flick. Australia appeal and the umpire takes it up. After a discussion Sri Lanka take the review and replays show us that it would have gone to miss the leg stump. 17/0

  • 4.1 Outside off, Thirimanne guides it through point and changes ends.
  • 3.6 Ohh! Fuller ball tailing back into Karunaratne who somehow manages to get an inside edge onto his pads. A promising over from Jhye comes to an end. 14/0
  • 3.5 Outside off again, left alone by Dimuth.
  • 3.4 Too wide outside off to make Karunaratne play at it.

  • 1.3 On the pads again, flicked way through square leg for a single.
  • 1.2 Outside off, left alone.
  • 1.1 Almost! Jhye serves his first ball on the leg side. Thirimanne plays it but the ball pops just wide of Harris at short leg. Can argue he could have been swifter but Lahiru survives. They cross as the ball rolls away on the on side.
  • Debutant, Jhye Richardson to share the new ball with Starc.
  • 0.6 Lovely. Yorker on the leg stump. Lahiru does well to keep it out and jam it towards the on side. He picks up a run and will face the next over. 6/0

  • The Gabba is all set to host its second day-night Test as Australia welcome Sri Lanka for a 2-match Test series. Hello and welcome to our coverage of this edition of the Australian summer. Sri Lanka fly down under and look to win their first Test series here. Australia on the other hand, will look to keep that record intact and show the critics what they are capable off. They didn't have the best of starts to their summer after India got the better of them. The Kangaroos have handed Jhye Richardson and Kurtis Patterson their caps and it will be interesting to see how they fare. A couple of other faces come in from their last Test series. Sri Lanka will be without Angelo Mathews and they will look to do better than what they did against the Kiwis. Stay with us for the toss.

Australia Vs Sri Lanka Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Lakmal bowled his heart out, taking a 5-fer but it was Lahiru Kumara who bowled with fire. The rest were not all that impressive. 6 overs left in the day. Can Sri Lanka see them off without damage? Here come the openers...
  • A decent batting display by the Australians. Harris played a dodged knock, seeing off the difficult period last evening and then knocks by Head, Labuschagne and Patterson. The latter two impressed the most, playing 'correct' cricket with the right technique and having loads of patience. Head, meanwhile, was flirting with his luck.
  • Harsh to say so. The pitch is not all that difficult to bat but it is the ball - if it moves, then Starc will talk. And if the latest member of the 200-club starts to talk, well, Sri Lanka will not be left with much to talk.
  • Sri Lanka made 144. Australia lead by 179. Does that mean an innings defeat is on the cards?
  • 106.2 OUT! The last wicket falls! A bit like the last ball but this time Richardson has chipped it in the air. Flighted one on off, Jhye skips down the track and tries playing across the line. But it catches the leading edge and loops in the air. Karunaratne moves across to his left from covers and takes a tumbling catch. Australia all out for 323!
  • 106.1 Advances down the track, is deceived in flight but does well to keep it out safely on the off side. Jhye should just look to give the strike back to Starc.
  • 105.6 FOUR! There was a second fielder down there in the deep on the leg side but not anymore before this ball but the pink ball is. Fine, fine flick shot off the pads by Starc. It's full and begging to be put away. A boundary to end the over, 11 from the over and the lead is now 179! 323/9
  • 105.5 SIX! Fireworks from Starc's bat! First biggie of the innings. Lakmal hurls one right in the slot for Starc, it's full around middle, Mitchell clears his front foot and towers it over long on for a biggie. 14 off last 7 balls for Mitchell.
  • 105.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 105.3 First run in Test cricket for Richardson. Not in a convincing manner but he's a number 11 batsman. An away swinger, around off, Richardson pushes at it with the intention to play through covers probably but slices it off the outer half to point. A single taken.
  • 105.2 Full and outside off, beaten on the drive.
  • 105.1 Sliding down the leg side, on a length, Jhye tries to flick but misses. He is hit on the thigh pad.
  • 104.6 Full and on off, Starc drives it straight back and it deflects off Jhye's bat to mid off. The mid on fielder mops it up, the batsmen decide not to cross. 312/9
  • 104.5 Goes down on one knee for a big heave across the line but fails to connect this time.
  • 104.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 104.3 FOUR! And again! Starc has decided to cut loose now. Another slog sweep by him. In the same region towards fine leg. The fielder in the deep is standing a shade up and it flies over him. Drops just ahead of the rope before crossing it. Starc just loves his slog sweeps.
  • 104.2 FOUR! Lovely shot! Starc usually prefers slogging over mid-wicket but he has dismissed this one over short fine leg. An arm ball, going down, Starc plays it with the angle and connects nicely. A boundary results.
  • 104.1 Appeal for an lbw! Perera delivers an arm ball on middle and leg, skidding in, Starc gets back to defend but misses. He is hit on the pads, they appeal but the umpire shakes his head. The replays later on show that there was an inside edge.
  • 103.6 Fullish outside off, pushed out to point to end the over. 304/9
  • 103.5 Slips a full ball down the leg side, Richardson tries flicking but misses.
  • Jhye Richardson is the last batsman.
  • 103.4 OUT! Plumb in front! No help from the technology for the debutant. A Test fifer for Lakmal, his third overall. Another inswinger from him to hunt down a batsman. He lands it on a length around middle and the ball nips back in off the seam. Patterson is caught napping inside the crease with his footwork, tries playing it straight but it shapes back in to rap him on the pads. The finger goes up as soon as the appeal is made. Kurtis takes the DRS but the replays show that it has hit him in line and is going on to disturb the leg pole. A knock of 30 but the young man showed good promise.
  • OUT! Dead plumb. This looks stone dead. But Patterson wants to see if he can change that LBW call. Looks very, very difficult...

  • 102.2 Leans forward to a full ball and pushes it to covers.
  • 102.1 Loopy and full on off, Starc lunges and defends it back.
  • Will Pucovski comes on to the field. Thoughts of declaration? He gives some drinks to Starc and then has a long chat. Surely the Aussies have enough on the board. Might do their fast bowlers a world of good in terms of confidence if they get a chance to bowl in helpful conditions...
  • 101.6 Keeps probing on and around off, getting it to move away from the batsman, Patterson leaves it alone. Two maidens in a row after a 15-run over. 302/8

  • 99.5 Played to the point region by the batsman.
  • 99.4 Short ball on off, rising onto the batsman at 128.6 kph, Starc gets back to fend at it and gloves it on the leg side. It rolls towards short leg, Mitchell has no idea initially where the ball is and his partner calls him through for a run.
  • 99.3 Turns a full ball in the gap at mid-wicket and takes a run.
  • 99.3 Full and angling in on off, Patterson is forward in defense towards mid off. The fielder there makes a sliding stop. Called a no ball for overstepping.
  • 99.2 FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for Patterson. First he shows how good he is behind square leg and now he displays his talent in front of square on the off side. Stays back to a shortish ball outside off and crunches it through the left side of the cover-point fielder for a boundary. 150 is the lead now!

  • 98.1 Short in length and outside off, Patterson cuts it through point and comes back for the second run.
  • 97.6 FOUR! Crashes the first ball he faces. Chameera provides width and Starc pounces onto it outside his off stump and spanks it through covers. 282/8
  • Mitchell Starc is the new batsman.
  • 97.5 OUT! This one was always on the cards. A 21-ball duck for Pat Cummins. This delivery is really unplayable. Chameera has bowled a gem here. Bowls a length ball in the line of the stumps and gets it to move away a hint on pitching. Cummins tries playing the line but it takes a thick outside edge. Dickwella makes no mistake behind the stumps and the struggle is over for Pat. Australia lead by 134 runs.
  • 97.4 Play and a miss! An away swinger outside off, Cummins is lured into the shot and misses.
  • 97.3 Full and on off, angling in, Patterson plants his front foot forward and bunts it towards mid-wicket for a quick single. Lakmal attacks the ball but misses his shy at the striker's end. Mendis does well to back the throw with a dive coming in from second slip.

  • 96.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 96.3 Spin and bounce, but down the leg side. Pat fails to flick and Dickwella also fails to collect it behind the wickets. They take a bye.
  • 96.2 Floated full around leg, Kurtis tries to sweep but fails to connect. It deflects off his pads to square leg and they steal a leg bye.
  • 96.1 Flatter and shorter on off, Patterson punches it from the crease to covers.
  • 95.6 Chameera bowls this one wide of the crease and lands it on a length outside off, Cummins pokes at it flat-footed and is beaten due to the away movement. 274/7
  • 95.5 Serves it on a driving length outside off, Cummins lets it be. There is a leg slip in place now. So, we can expect a surprise short ball any time.
  • 95.4 Chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • 95.3 Good length delivery in the zone outside off, shaping away, Pat allows it through again.
  • 95.2 Bowls it on a length and outside off, Cummins makes a leave.
  • 95.1 Stifled appeal for an lbw! Chameera is back on the field and delivers an inswinger from a good length around off. Cummins offers no shot and takes it on his pads. Too high.
  • 94.6 Tossed up and outside off, left alone to end the over. 274/7

  • 93.5 Hurls in a good length delivery in the corridor outside off, Cummins makes an easy leave.
  • 93.4 Switches to 'round the wicket now and angles in a length ball on off. Patterson is on the front foot as he pushes it to the off side. It rolls in the gap at covers and they cross for a single.
  • 93.3 Angling away from the southpaw, it's outside off and Patterson has nothing to do with it.
  • 93.2 A length ball on middle, Patterson brings down a straight bat in defense.
  • 93.1 Good length ball on off, blocked from the crease.
  • Dushmantha Chameera comes back into the attack. Meanwhile, Suranga Lakmal is seen leaving the field. Comfort break? Or another injury? The way he ran in, looks like the former.
  • 92.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 273/7
  • 92.5 Nearly carries to short leg. Full and around off, spinning in, Cummins gets forward to defend but it takes the inside edge and goes on one bounce to short leg.

  • 91.5 Another delivery in the channel outside off, Pat allows it through.
  • 91.4 Chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • 91.3 Appeal for a caught behind! Not given. Full and outside off, shaping away, Cummins is sucked into the drive but it moves away to beat the outside edge. They appeal but the umpire remains unmoved. There are six slip fielders behind waiting for any edge. Attacking from Dinesh Chandimal.
  • 91.2 Beauty! This is the delivery he should have bowled. Angling in around off, on a length and getting it to straighten, Cummins can't do much there. Tries to defend and is lucky not to have edged it.
  • 91.1 No hat-trick! Lakmal bowls it wide and outside off, short in length, Lakmal allows it through. Not the kind of delivery you will bowl when on a hat-trick. We saw Roach doing the same yesterday when on a hat-trick against England.

  • 90.1 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • Pat Cummins is the new batsman.
  • 89.6 OUT! The catch is fine and Tim Paine bags a golden duck. What a ball to get first up! A peach by Lakmal. He dishes out a back of a length ball around off and gets it to swerve away and Paine is caught on the back foot flirting inside the line. He gets squared up completely and the extra bounce catches the outside edge. It's dying in front of second slip but Mendis does well to go down low and snap it inches above the surface. He is running in celebration and the umpire has referred it upstairs. It's a clean catch in the replays and Paine has to depart. Kusal took a similar catch earlier in the day. Superb effort! 272/7
  • Tim Paine is gone first ball! But the umpire wants to check whether Kusal Mendis has grabbed that low catch cleanly or not. He is up and running in celebration, very sure that he has pouched it. Let's see the replays...
  • Skipper Tim Paine is in next.
  • 89.5 OUT! It's high but not high enough to miss the top of leg stump. It's clipping and umpire's call stays! Head has to walk back and he will feel that he missed out on a golden opportunity to get his maiden Test hundred. Lakmal with his third wicket here. He bowls a good length ball on off and it nips back in after hitting the deck. Head strides ahead and across to flick it across the line but misses and is trapped on the pads. They appeal and the finger goes up. Head takes the DRS thinking that it hit him high on the knee-roll but the replays roll in to disappoint him. End of a scratchy knock by Travis but he gusted out there and deserved the three-digit score.
  • Shout for an lbw! The finger goes up and Travis Head takes the DRS. Is height the factor there?
  • Square leg drops back.
  • 89.4 Lakmal goes short around off, Travis immediately goes on his toes to play the pull shot but it takes the inner half of his bat and rolls to mid on.
  • 89.3 Angling away from the batsman, on a good length, Head keeps his weight on the back foot and punches it in front of square on the off side. The cover-point fielder moves across to stop the ball and they take a couple of runs. Good calling by Head.

  • Dushmantha Chameera is back on the field but Lahiru Kumara continues to be off. Meanwhile, Lakmal to continue...

  • 87.5 Lakmal loses his radar this time and slips a length ball down the leg side. Head has no chance of flicking and Dickwella does well to dive across to his right to collect the ball.
  • 87.4 Some considerable movement on this delivery. Lakmal lands it on a length outside off and it nips back in off the seam. Head does well to play it across the line towards mid on. He didn't overcommit himself on the front foot.
  • 87.3 Good length ball landing on off and angling down the leg side, Head tries flicking but misses and is hit on the pads.
  • 87.2 This time the length is full and it has been angled in around off, Head is drawn forward as he pushes it gently to cover-point.

Here is Dilruwan Perera to start off proceedings after Dinner. The debutant Patterson to face. Here we go...
  • ... DAY 2, FINAL SESSION ...
  • Australia well, for what seems for them once in a blue moon, are on top. This is a nice opportunity for the newbies to get a big score and grind the opposition. Join us back at 6 pm local (0800 GMT) for the final rites of the day.
  • What is disappointing for Sri Lanka is the way they played in this session. They nearly struck in the first over after Tea but Dickwella could not get that chance. Post that, it has been a series of poor deliveries and poor fielding efforts. The bowling looks ragged as well.
  • Fantastic session for Australia. 90 runs in 30 overs for the loss of just Labuschagne. The lead is now 105 and one just feels that another good hour for the home side and that might be it for the Lankans.

He has missed out on a deserving hundred. Out of nowhere, Sri Lanka have picked up a wicket, with the new ball just 1.5 overs away. Full and around off, Marnus comes down the track and looks to chip it to the on side. Unfortunately for him, it goes straight to silly mid on where Lahiru Thirimanne does the formalities. • 61.2 Beauty. On a good length outside off, Labuschagne looks to defend but the ball moves away off the seam, then straightens a touch and beats the outside edge.
  • 61.1 On a length outside off, placed towards cover.
  • 60.6 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 195/4
  • 60.5 Full and outside off, pushed back to the bowler.
  • 60.4 Outside off again, left alone this time.
  • 60.3 Outside off, gripping away, Travis adjusts and pushes it towards point.
  • 60.2 This time he goes back and punches it towards the bowler.
  • 60.1 Full and around middle, Head looks to defend but the ball goes off the inner half of the bat towards short leg.
  • DRINKS BREAK! It has been a good passage of play for Australia. They have not lost a wicket and have looked calm and composed with their batting. Sri Lanka on the other hand, have not picked up a wicket but there have been some close calls. Travis Head got a life in the first over after Tea but Dickwella spilled the chance. It was crucial at that time for the visitors to put pressure again on the Aussie batsmen. Will they be forced to pay the price for it? Dhananjaya de Silva to bowl now.
  • 59.6 Bowls a bumper, Marnus does well to duck under it. 195/4
  • 59.5 Length delivery on off, Head taps it towards covers for a single.
  • 59.4 Short of a length delivery, Labuschagne pulls it over mid-wicket. The batsmen get just a single.
  • 59.3 Full and around middle, flicked straight to mid-wicket.
  • 59.2 Outside off, punched off the back foot.
  • 59.1 On a good length around off, solidly defended back to the bowler.
  • 58.6 Comes down the track and blocks. 193/4
  • 58.5 Full and down the leg side, swept fine for a single.
  • 58.4 Full and around off, watchfully defended.
  • 58.3 Half shout for lbw! NOT OUT! Flighted delivery on leg, Labuschagne looks to sweep but gets hit on the pads. The bowler appeals but the umpire shakes his head. Probably impact was outside leg.
  • 58.2 FOUR! MAIDEN HALF CENTURY IN TESTS FOR LABUSCHAGNE! In his 6th innings.
  • 58.1 Full on middle, worked wide of mid on for a single.
  • 57.6 Full and outside off, driven straight to mid off. 187/4
  • 57.5 Beautiful shot, excellent stop. Full and wide outside off, Head leans into this and drives it through the covers. Lahiru Kumara chases the ball and manages to haul it back in, before he can touch the ropes. Three runs taken.
  • 57.4 Full on off, Head drives it straight back towards the bowler where Chameera does well to stop it and it goes past his hands to the mid off region.
  • 57.3 FOUR! 100-RUN STAND IS UP! It has been a tricky partnership but it has survived. Could have been broken but it is still going strong. Short and outside off, Head latches on to the cut and gets it behind point for a boundary.
  • 57.2 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 57.1 Full and around off, Head looks to flick but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads.
  • Dushmantha Chameera is back on. 11-1-30-0 so far.
  • 56.6 Another sweep shot played, this time through square leg for a couple. 180/4
  • 56.5 Outside off, punched through the off side for a run.
  • 56.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 56.3 The batsman gets to the pitch of the ball and defends it.
  • 56.2 The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball.
  • 56.1 Full and down the leg side, swept through fine leg for a single.
  • 55.6 Defended off the back foot by the batsman. 176/4
  • 55.5 On middle and leg, flicked to the leg side.
  • 55.4 FOUR! MARVELLOUS! In between his flashy shots, Head has shown his class as well. Full and outside off, Travis leans and drives it down the ground. Mid off dives to his left but the ball speeds through. The lead moves to 32.
  • 55.3 Around off, solidly defended.
  • 55.2 Full on middle and off, worked against the line through mid-wicket for a single.
  • 55.1 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • 54.6 APPEAL FOR LBW! NOT OUT! Hmmm... looks close on the replays. Flighted delivery on off, Travis comes down the track to defend but gets hit on the pads. Perera appeals but the umpire shakes his head. Sri Lanka don't go for the review. Over to the Hawk Eye for our benefit. It shows that the impact was outside off and it would have been umpire's call in terms of hitting the stumps. Interesting observation from Michael Hussey on air though. He reckons that even though the impact is shown to be outside off, Travis had his bat behind the line - which means, impact does not matter. So... could have been given out. 171/4
  • 54.5 Short delivery, Travis cuts it to point.
  • 54.4 Tossed up on middle, Marnus flicks it towards mid-wicket for a single.
  • 54.3 Full on middle, Head drives it through mid on. Lakmal chases from mid on and stops it just before the ropes. Brilliant fielding from Suranga Lakmal. The batsmen get three runs.
  • 54.2 Floated on middle, Head flicks it to the leg side.

  • 53.5 Good length delivery on off, Head defends off the front foot.
  • 53.4 Full on middle, Labuschagne flicks it towards mid-wicket for a single.
  • 53.3 One more leave outside off.
  • 53.2 Left alone again.
  • 53.1 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • 52.6 Full and outside off, driven straight to mid off. 163/4
  • 52.5 Punched off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 52.4 Full and just outside off, watchfully pushed back.
  • 52.3 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 52.2 Outside off, punched back to the bowler.
  • 52.1 Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
  • 51.6 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump. 163/4
  • 51.5 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 51.4 The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball - but fails.
  • 51.3 EDGED AND TAKEN! NO, NOT TAKEN! A let-off. A big let-off. The opportunity came but it has not been accepted. Good length delivery outside off, Head looks to defend but gets an outside edge due to the away movement. It goes towards first slip but Dickwella dived and had gone with one hand to take the catch but spills it. It was a tough catch. First slip would have taken it easily to his right. It would have been a crucial wicket in the context of the game. Travis Head gets a life.
  • 51.2 Full and outside off, Labuschagne drives this through the covers for three.
  • 51.1 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • The best time to bat in a Day-Night Test. Australia will hope to score runs and up that run rate. Wickets can probably put a question mark on that thought. Suranga Lakmal to set the question paper first up, to Marnus Labuschagne.
  • ... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
  • Hard to fault the Sri Lankan bowlers for picking up just 2 wickets. But such is the state of the game. They need to keep on trying. Kumara was the pick of the lot with his pace while Lakmal was accurate. Can that pressure be created again? The Lankans will be looking to break this partnership and try and finish the innings off before Dinner. Probably try and limit the lead under 100. Australia, on the other hand, would be hoping that at least one of Head or Labuschagne is there at the crease when the pink ball is bowled under lights. Stay tuned...
  • So Labuschagne bid his time, soaked in the pressure and then slowly but surely, started to score. He was on 10 from 46 balls at one stage. Now he is on 36 from 80. That turn in momentum was brought about by him and the hosts are feeling confident because of his sponge-like ability to soak all the pressure. Oz are lucky that they did not lose more than 2 wickets in this session. Head was playing with his body on the frying pan and on fire, with too many loose shots. Got a few edges but all fell safe. Crucially for the home side, he looks set now.
  • If I would have been playing on my gaming console, Australia would have been all out by now. But as they say in cricket, one needs to understand the situation. Respect when the going is tough and then capitalize when it gets a bit easier. Marnus Labuschagne has been that bright student in the class who comes first and answers all his teacher's questions. Good boy.
  • What is Test cricket? A test of one's character. Be it a batsman or a bowler. Marcus Harris scored a boundary off the fifth ball of the afternoon. The next 10 overs yielded just 23 with 2 wickets. That has how it has been. Tough. Competitive. Sri Lanka gave it their all, keeping Australia busy. The tight lines and lengths did not waiver much and the hosts were in a pool of trouble. But then, eventually, the pressure started to ease off.
  • 26 overs, 87 runs, 2 wickets. If you are switching on just now, you will have a look at the scorecard and say, ahh... normal scenario. Australia will score 400 and win this by an innings. Bad bowling from Sri Lanka. Well, actually, that has not been the case.
  • 50.6 Full and outside off, left alone. TEA ON DAY 2, AUSTRALIA LEAD BY 15! 159/4
  • 50.5 Outside off, pushed back to the bowler.
  • 50.4 Down the leg side, helped towards square leg for a quick run.
  • 50.3 The length goes shorter and immediately Marnus goes back. Punches it through the covers for a couple.
  • 50.2 FOUR! There comes the sweep again. The ball is pitched outside leg, Labuschagne gets his front foot out of the way, goes down and sweeps it through square leg for a boundary. Moves to 33. The lead is now 12.
  • 50.1 Landed outside off, Labuschagne opens the face of his bat and guides it straight to short third man.
  • Looks like we will have one more over...
  • 49.6 Full and fast outside off, let through. 152/4
  • 49.5 Straight one, skids on, defended back to the bowler.
  • 49.4 That is a short one which does not turn, pushed back to the bowler.
  • 49.3 The batsman fails to put bat on ball.

  • 47.6 Short and outside off, cut straight to point. 148/4
  • 47.5 Outside off, eased through the covers for a single.
  • 47.4 Down the leg side, now Head earns a triple with a flick through mid-wicket. AUSTRALIA INTO THE LEAD.
  • 47.3 SCORES ARE LEVEL NOW. Full and around middle, swinging in, ML works it wide of mid on. Lahiru Kumara gives it a good chase but the batsmen take the third on the row.
  • 47.2 On a good length outside off, coming back a long way, Marnus knows where his off stump is and lets it go.
  • 47.1 Outside off, left alone.
  • 47.1 Starts his spell with a NO BALL. The delivery is decent, on a length and just outside off. Labuschagne defends it towards mid on.
  • Suranga Lakmal to have a final burst before Tea. 15 minutes left. 14-6-32-2 so far.
  • 46.6 Full again, well blocked out. 140/4
  • 46.5 Around middle, watchfully blocked out.

  • 45.3 Opportunity missed. Short and wide outside off, Marnus cuts but straight to point.
  • 45.2 Good length, just short of full, solidly defended with a nice stride.
  • 45.1 A bumper, on off, Labuschagne ducks.
  • 44.6 Full and around middle, worked wide of mid-wicket for a quick run. 10 from the over. 136/4
  • 44.5 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 44.4 FOUR! Fine way to raise the 50-run stand. Full and around middle and off, Labuschagne gets down and sweeps it powerfully, to the left of the diving backward square leg fielder for a boundary. The deficit is now 9.
  • 44.3 Turn and bounce. Wasn't all that short, but Marnus went on the back foot to turn it to the leg side. The ball skidded on, took the inside edge and hit him on the pads. Luckily for him, it lobbed ahead, instead of towards short leg.
  • 44.2 Full and outside off, Labuschagne gets down and across and paddles it fine. Two more to the total.
  • 44.1 Short and outside off, Head rocks back and punches it through the covers. By the time Suranga Lakmal can sweep the ground from point to cover, three runs are taken. Head moves to 22.
  • 43.6 Full and outside off, driven towards mid off. 126/4
  • 43.5 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 43.4 Outside off, left alone.
  • 43.3 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 43.2 LBW shout. Not out. Looked close initially but replays indicate that height could have been an issue. Yes. Now Hawk Eye confirms. On a good length outside off, coming back in, Labuschagne shoulders arms but is hit on the pads. Kumara appeals but Chandimal does not bother reviewing.
  • 43.1 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • 42.6 Outside off, punched through mid off for three. 126/4
  • 42.5 Down the leg side, flicked through mid-wicket for another single.

  • 42.3 Fuller on length, worked straight to short leg again.
  • 42.2 Around middle, worked towards short leg.
  • 42.1 Full and down the leg side, Head misses his flick and the ball goes off his pads through fine leg. A leg bye taken.
  • 41.6 Down the leg side, Travis turns it towards fine leg for a run. 120/4
  • 41.6 WIDE. Waste of a bouncer. Banged in too short, right in the middle of the pitch. Easy leave for Head.
  • 41.5 Full and outside off, eased towards mid off's left for a single. Labuschagne moves to 10.
  • 41.4 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 41.3 On middle and leg, flicked straight to mid-wicket.

  • 40.5 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.

  • 40.3 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 40.2 Full and around off, watchfully defended.
  • 40.1 The batsman has punched the ball off the back foot towards the bowler.
  • Spin time. Dilruwan Perera to bowl. 3-2-4-1 so far. He needs to ensure that the pressure is sustained.
  • 39.6 FOUR! Tough luck for Chandimal. His foot was touching the ropes while deflecting the ball. Full and outside off, Head drives this through the covers. Chandimal gives it a good chase, gets to the ball with a slide, tries to push the ball back in but misses. Tries again in the second attempt and this time he is successful. But that is when his foot touches the ropes. The umpires refer it upstairs and it is confirmed. 114/4
  • Is that a four? Dinesh Chandimal has made a lovely save but is he in contact with the rope? The third umpire is getting ready with his answer sheet...
  • 39.5 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 39.4 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 39.3 Outside off, left alone.

  • 38.6 The batsman works it down the leg side. That man from backward square leg has been moved to square leg. 105/4

  • 38.4 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.

  • 37.4 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 37.3 Outside off, left alone.
  • 37.3 NO BALL. That is a massive overstepping. Full and outside off, worked to the leg side. 100 UP FOR AUSTRALIA. Still 44 runs adrift.
  • 37.2 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 37.1 Outside off, left alone.
  • 36.6 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through. 99/4
  • 36.5 A short ball outside off, that barely rises, Marnus looks to pull but mistimes it towards mid on.
  • 36.4 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 36.3 On a good length around off, watchfully defended.
  • 36.2 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 36.1 A length ball outside off, Labuschagne lets it through.
  • Lahiru Kumara returns. 10-3-28-1 so far.
  • 35.6 Outside off, let through. 99/4
  • 35.5 The batsman fails to put bat on ball.
  • 35.4 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • 35.3 EDGED, FOUR! Loose, too loose from Head. Full and wide outside off, Travis goes after the carrot and almost has to pay for it. Gets a thick outside edge but luckily for him, it flies over a leaping second slip. Head immediately punches his bat in anger.
  • 35.2 Full again, watchfully defended.
  • 35.1 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • 34.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 95/4
  • 34.5 Driven towards the mid on region.
  • 34.4 Oops... should I play? Should I leave? Oh dear... I almost had to leave the ground. An attempt to look at what might be going in Labuschagne's mind. Full and outside off, Marnus initially comes forward to play. But then, the ball comes back in and he looks to leave. Too late. A bottom edge is induced and the ball goes towards point.
  • 34.3 Full and just outside off, watchfully defended.
  • 34.2 On a good length outside off, Labuschagne gets forward and across to play but is beaten.
  • 34.1 Full and outside off, left alone.
  • DRINKS BREAK. It has been a good passage of play for Sri Lanka. They got two wickets in the form of Marcus Harris and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon. They have bowled some brilliant lines and lengths and tested the batsmen. Australia have been under pressure and it has been continuous. Something might just give here...
  • 33.6 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through. 95/4
  • 33.5 OVERTHROWS. Cannot say it was totally needless. A lovely nut to start. Full and around off, Labuschagne gets across to defend but misses. The ball comes back in a long way and hits him on the pads. Chameera appeals for LBW but is turned down as the impact looked to be outside off. Meanwhile, there is some more drama. The ball deflects towards the slip cordon where an alert Kusal Mendis charges in from second slip and has a shy at the striker's end, hoping to catch Labuschagne off guard, who is still working on his huge stride. Unfortunately for Kusal, he misses. The back foot had just made it in the crease. But then, more misfortune arrived. Normally, in Tests, you do not have a mid on. There was none here either. Because the throw missed the stumps, it went through mid on which was vacant. By the time short mid-wicket could track it down, three runs are taken. The deficit is now 49.
  • 33.4 OFF THE MARK AFTER 19 BALLS. Around middle, tailing down, Marnus gets across and tucks it through square leg for a couple. The stand moves to 10.
  • 33.3 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 33.2 What. A . Ball. The length is full and the line is outside off. All the necessary ingredients contained in inviting the batsman for a long drive. But Labuschagne is not in the mood. Lets it go. And it is a good decision too. Tell you why. The ball initially curls away but then swings in like a banana. Barely carries to the keeper.
  • 33.1 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • First bowling change of the day. Dushmantha Chameera to bowl. 7-1-14-0 so far.
  • 32.6 There is that booming indipper from Lakmal. Comes in a long way from outside off, Head gets across to play but then shoulders arms. Is hit on the pads but it is too high. Lakmal screams his lungs out but the umpire moves away. 90/4
  • 32.5 Landed on a good length outside off, pushed towards cover.
  • 32.4 FOUR! FIRST RUN OF THE BAT AFTER 34 BALLS. First run after 22 successive dots. Short and outside off, Head flashes hard and cuts it behind point for a boundary! Gets off the mark in style. A rare loose ball.
  • 32.3 On a good length outside off, delivered from around the wicket, Head gets across and does what he did on the previous two balls - leave it alone.
  • 32.2 Similar ball, same reaction, same result.
  • 32.1 Landed on a length outside off, left alone.
  • 31.6 Full and just outside off, Labuschagne gets a good stride forward and blocks. Third consecutive maiden over. 86/4
  • 31.5 The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 31.4 On a good length outside off, ML shoulders arms.
  • 31.3 A bouncer around off, slower in pace, Marnus lets it sail through.
  • 31.2 Landed outside off, Labuschagne gets a good stride forward and shoulders arms.
  • 31.1 Full and just outside off, watchfully defended down the track.
  • 30.6 This is very, very good bowling from Sri Lanka. Not giving anything away. Around off again, Head tries to maneuver the ball to the leg side, but can only find mid on. Another run-less over. 86/4
  • 30.5 Full and outside off, pushed towards mid off.
  • 30.4 Landed outside off, nice pace, let through once more.
  • 30.3 Full and outside off, not played at again.
  • 30.2 One more leave outside off.
  • 30.1 Landed outside off, inviting the drive, full and wide, but Head shoulders arms.
  • 29.6 Another huge LBW shout. But not out. Kumara is agitated but Chandimal calms him down. No need to waste the second review. The impact looked outside off and Hawk Eye confirms. Good technique shown by Labuschagne. Gets a good stride in, meets the ball on the pitch but misses it, due to the inward movement. Is hit on the pads but his long stride and slight shuffle across save him. Another lovely over. No runs off the bat since ball number 5 of the 27th over. The Sri Lankans are loving the 'Gabba... 86/4
  • 29.5 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 29.4 Landed outside off, this one comes back in as well, but ML knows where his off stump is. Shoulders arms.
  • 29.3 A bouncer now, but way too high. Marnus ducks.
  • 29.2 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump again.
  • 29.1 Landed outside off, coming in a long way, Labuschagne shoulders arms. That was not far from the off stump.
  • 28.6 Outside off, left alone. Superb over from Lakmal. 86/4
  • 28.5 FOUR BYES! That is a snorter. A real snorter. Banged in short, around middle, Head ducks. Dickwella leaps and tries to get a glove to it but it is just too high above him. Flies away to the fine leg fence. The deficit is now 58.
  • Travis Head walks in at number 6, replacing Lyon. Two new batsmen in the middle.
  • 28.4 OUT! The ball has carried and Lyon has to go! Second wicket in the space of 17 balls this morning. Australia have lost 3/10 in the span of 40 deliveries, if you add Khawaja's dismissal last night. Lovely delivery, full and around off, Nathan looked to defend. However, the away movement consumed him. A thick outside edge was induced which went towards second slip. It was dipping and Kusal Mendis had to dive forward. But he took it cleanly or rather, let us put it this way - he was confident that he had taken it. Lyon was going nowhere though. He wanted it to be checked and the umpires obliged. Not quite sure what the soft signal was but does not matter. One look in the replays was enough to take the right decision. O. U. T. Australia still trail by 62. Can Sri Lanka start thinking about the lead now?
  • Is that out? Has that carried? Things happening at the 'Gabba. Lyon has edged one but he doesn't think it has carried to second slip. Third umpire intervention time...
  • 28.3 Full and outside off, driven sweetly but straight to short extra cover.
  • 28.2 Around off, pushed towards point.
  • 28.1 Jaffa! Every over is now having a play and a miss first ball. On a length outside off, Lyon looks to defend but the ball moves away late off the seam and beats the outside edge.
  • 27.6 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 82/3
  • 27.5 Around middle, Labuschagne gets across and works it towards square leg.
  • 27.4 Outside off, left alone watchfully.
  • 27.3 NOT OUT. Impact itself is outside leg. That is a really bad review. One cannot blame Dickwella as he would have been blinded by Lyon. But what about Kumara? It was a full toss which was missed, yes. But still, the ball had some distance to travel. Agreed that the batsman was shuffling across. But that came after playing the shot. Anyways, in the heat of the moment and all the excitement, Kumara probably thought he had Lyon LBW when he missed the flick. But not Hawk Eye.
  • Huge LBW shout! Not out, says the umpire. Kumara reckons that he has Lyon here. Chandimal takes the review. Looks to be missing leg to the naked eye...
  • 27.2 Nearly through him! On a length outside off, Nathan looks to defend but the ball sneaks back in off the pitch, takes the inside edge and almost goes back onto the stumps! The pads come in the way...
  • 27.1 FOUR LEG BYES. Goes for the glory ball, does Kumara but ends up dishing it too full, around middle and leg. Lyon looks to flick but misses. However, the ball deflects off his pads past the keeper to the fine leg fence.
  • 26.6 Landed outside off, little outswing, left alone. Even before Lakmal can take his cap back from the umpire, Lahiru Kumara has his hat off. He is pumped up and eager to bowl straightaway. 77/3
  • 26.5 Full and outside off, Lyon eases this through the covers for a single.
  • 26.4 Landed outside off, left alone.
  • 26.3 Full and just outside off, watchfully defended.
  • 26.2 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 26.1 Good start by Lakmal too. He lands this on a good length, outside off, Lyon feels for it but the ball nips away off the seam and beats the outside edge.
  • Who is in? Marnus Labuschagne it is. Suranga Lakmal to bowl from the other end.
  • 25.6 OUT! Caught next ball! Oh wow. This is so, so lucky for Sri Lanka. Bad ball, but a wicket! Short and outside off, Harris latches on to the cut shot and hits it well too. But finds Lahiru Thirimanne at point to perfection! All that watchfulness last evening has come to naught. Harris started on 40 this morning. This is a nice lesson for him to understand that every day, every session, every mini-session and every time you start after a break, you start on 0. Australia trail by 68, Sri Lanka hunting for 7 more wickets. 76/3
  • 25.5 FOUR! MAGNIFICENT! The most confident shot played by Harris all through his innings. Full and outside off, Marcus leans into the shot, reaches out to meet the ball and strokes it through the covers.

  • 25.3 Just outside off, Marcus offers a dead-bat defense towards cover.

  • 25.1 Good start. On a length outside off, Harris tentatively pushes at it but the ball seams away and whizzes past the outside edge.
  • We are ready for the game to resume. Marcus Harris will be accompanied by night watchman Nathan Lyon. Lahiru Kumara to start off proceedings to Harris. 6-0-24-0 so far. Here we go...
  • The visitors may be a long way behind as of now but they need not be disheartened. Given the way Australia's batting has performed in the last few months, there are big chances of them not getting too much of a lead. A one-inning shootout is what they should aim for.
  • A rare good day it was for the Aussies as they took the game by the scruff of the neck with the pink ball. The match has begun at a fast pace with 12 wickets on Day 1. In a day-night Test, certainly more scalps can be expected on days to follow. Does that mean we could see Sri Lanka batting before the lights take effect? Or will Australia take the match out of Sri Lanka's reach? Hello and a warm welcome to the second day of the opening Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at the 'Gabba.
  • ... DAY 2, AFTERNOON SESSION ...
  • Is the game over for Sri Lanka? Well, no. Certainly not, we hope! But it might well be, if Australia manage to bat out the whole day of Friday. The fact that they have struggled to play out a whole day consistently in recent times will give the Lankans hope. Can they come out firing on Day 2 and restrict the Aussies under 200? Then, we can really have a contest. Join us for all the action at 1 pm local (0300 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
  • Earlier in the day, a fearsome quick bowling display was there for all to see as Oz nipped the Sri Lankan innings for just 144. Cummins and debutant Jhye were the pick of the bowlers, with 7 scalps between them. The Lankans will be rueing that effort - or lack of it - winning the toss, electing to bat but not even lasting a day.
  • It was a difficult session for the Aussies under lights, with the pink ball moving around. Marcus Harris never looked settled but ironically, he has batted through the session, on a patient 40. Burns and Khawaja made two trips to the middle and back but neither looked too confident either. Both the stands got a start, but could not be converted.
  • That last wicket might just spur the Lankans on but it has been Australia's session and Australia's day. After losing the toss, if you can bowl out the opposition in just over 2 sessions and then reduce the deficit by half, you have had a jolly good day.

Australia Vs Sri Lanka Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Brisbane done, off to Canberra next but Sri Lanka have a baggage of an injury as well along with the defeat to be carried forward. Lahiru Kumara is ruled out of the series. Lots of headaches for the visitors and one can only think that the only way for them to come back will be to start afresh and treat the next one as a completely new game, trying to forget this loss as soon as possible. That Test will begin on 1st Feb, Friday. That will be a Day game and will begin at 1030 Local (2330 GMT, Jan 31 night). Join us for that! Till then, take care and cheers. For live cricketing action now though, you can switch tabs to follow the game between India and New Zealand where the hosts are chasing a mountain of runs at Mount Maunganui.
  • PAT CUMMINS IS ADJUDGED AS THE MAN OF THE MATCH FOR HIS INCREDIBLE MATCH FIGURES OF 10/62.
  • Earlier in the game, Australia bundled out the visitors for a paltry 144 after the latter had won the toss and decided to bat first. Cummins was the wrecker-in-chief in that innings as well picking up four whereas the debutant Jhye picked up three. In their turn to bat, Australia were at a precarious position at one stage at 82/4 but then a 166-run stand for the fifth wicket between Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head meant they comfortably went past the Sri Lankan total. They ended up with a lead of 179 which in the end proved to be more than enough for the hapless Asian team.
  • Sri Lanka have received a real pasting here. Outplayed in all departments in this Daynight Test here at Brisbane. The second innings went spiralling down and the lack of resistance would be what hurts the visitors the most. Pat Cummins destroyed the batting order picking up 6 wickets and was given good support by Jhye Richardson who picked up two of his own. Nathan Lyon had a lone wicket whereas the last batsman, Lahiru Kumara was absent hurt. There was not much to talk about the batting, only Lahiru Thirimanne provided some resistance but was running out of partners all through the innings.
  • Jhye Richardson in an interview says that he was nervous the first day. Adds that he is happy to have contributed to the team victory. Applauds his teammates for a stellar performance and singles out Cummins for special praise. Talking about the post-match huddle, he says that the skipper was telling them that it was a pep talk and motivation for them to continue these kind of performances. Signs off by saying it was an amazing catch from Patterson and really loves the fielding effort of everyone.
  • 50.5 OUT! It is all over here at the 'Gabba. Lahiru Kumara is not going to come out to bat and hence, that is the end of the Test match. AUSTRALIA HAVE WON BY AN INNINGS AND 40 RUNS, LEAD 1-0 IN THE TWO-MATCH SERIES. Coming to the last wicket, it was a flighted ball on middle and turning in, Lakmal could not resist and comes down the ground looking to smash it into oblivion but misses the ball and Paine completes an easy stumping. A fitting way for the inspirational skipper of Australia to end the game. He took over in tough times and this victory would mean a lot after the series loss to India. Pulls up all the teammates in a huddle and gives a pep talk before they walk off the field all smiles.
  • 50.4 A back foot defense this time from the batsman.

  • Drinks break. Could possibly be the last drinks break of the game. Australia steam rolling the Lankans here. Two away if Kumara comes to bat, one if he does not. The main aim for the visitors would be to first at least make the hosts bat again. Can they?
  • 46.6 Good length delivery on off, Dushmantha defends off the back foot. 116/8

  • 45.2 Good length delivery outside off, Lakmal leaves it alone.
  • 45.1 Full on off, Lakmal drives it through covers. The batsmen pick up a couple.
  • 44.6 On middle and leg, worked away through mid-wicket for a couple of runs by Chameera. 112/8
  • Dushmantha Chameera walks in to bat at no. 10. Could be the last guy to bat as the status of Kumara is unknown.
  • 44.5 OUT! If the last catch was a stunner, this is even more brilliant. Superman stuff from Patterson at gully. A length ball on off, extra bounce and catches the shoulder of the bat and flies to the right of gully. Surely was looking like it was going away from the fielder but Kurtis leaps to his right and holds on for a one-handed blinder. Eight down now! Sri Lanka might not even make Australia bat again here it looks like. Cummins picks up his sixth one of the innings and the tenth of his game.
  • 44.4 Good length delivery on off, Perera defends off the back foot.
  • 44.3 Length delivery on off, Dilruwan defends off the back foot.

  • 43.6 Oooh! Almost. A length ball coming into the batsman once more, missed by Lakmal as he gets hit on the pads and the ball lobs to short leg. No bat on it and the cherry seems to be going down leg once more. 110/7
  • 43.5 Beaten! Yet again outside off and beaten by sheer pace as Suranga does not bring his bat down in time.
  • 43.4 Full and spearing on the pads, Lakmal misses the ball and gets hit on the pad. It was going down the leg side so the appeal is turned down by the umpire.
  • 43.3 Short of a length outside off, 148 kph! Lakmal looks to poke at the ball but fails to put bat on ball.
  • 43.2 Short of a length at the hips, looks like a set plan with a leg gully in place. Dilruwan misses his glance and the ball goes off the thigh pad and lobs fine on the leg side for a leg bye.

  • Suranga Lakmal comes in at number 9.
  • 42.6 OUT! What a brilliant catch by Marcus Harris. Good stuff by Richardson, bowling to the plan. Short of a length delivery, Dickwella looks to pull over square leg but finds Marcus Harris at backward square leg who goes to his left and jumps and pulls off a stunner. Niroshan seems to suggest that he did not see that fielder but the fact is that he has been there for quite some time. He will have to leave and Sri Lanka still trail by 70 runs. Second wicket for Jhye Richardson. What a debut this boy is having. Australia closing in on what could be a victory with an innings. 109/7
  • 42.5 Good length delivery on off, Niroshan keeps it out.

  • Dilruwan Perera is in next.
  • 33.3 OUT! Bizarre! The third umpire asks the umpire to stay with the original decision. What has happened here? The Snicko has shown a turbulence but in a frame that is after the ball passes the bat. It is the fifth wicket for Cummins, the fourth time in Tests. A length ball outside off and shapes away slightly, Thirimanne was ahead to defend but the ball straightens and there is a noise as the ball passes the bat and goes to Tim Paine. An immediate celebration from the fielders and the bowlers and the umpire agrees too. Lahiru was surprised and immediately goes upstairs. The replays roll in, there is nothing on Hotspot and we go to the Snickometer. The line remains straight as the ball passes the outside edge but there is a slight turbulence once it is past the willow. The third umpire feels that the frame was a little behind and suggests it is a faint edge. Asks the on-field umpire to remain with his original decision. Thirimanne cannot believe it but he has to go. His dogged resistance comes to an end. The Lankans are still 100 runs behind with only 4 wickets left.
  • Review time... Thirimanne has been ruled caught behind by the umpire but he has taken it upstairs as he thinks that he has not nicked that one. Does not look too confident though. Let's see what the replays say.

  • 32.1 Full delivery on leg, Lahiru flicks it towards square leg for a single.
  • Welcome back after Tea. The players and umpires are out in the middle. Lahiru Thirimanne and Niroshan Dickwella are out as well. Mitchell Starc will bowl the first over of this session and Thirimanne will face.
  • ... Day 3, Session 2 ...
  • Now, Niroshan Dickwella has joined forces with the opening batsman. They played out one remaining over of the session but whether they will continue and help Sri Lanka out of this mess and keep them alive in the game is to be seen. Doesn't look like they will to me though, considering how Cummins and Richardson are bowling. The former has got enough rest after his initial burst in the first session and should be back on anytime now after the break. Good luck to the Sri Lankan batsmen, would be lovely for Test cricket if they stand up and post a challenge though. Join us in a bit for the second session of the day as the visitors try to wipe off the deficit that is still 105 runs.
  • What a session for the Aussies but one would have definitely hoped for a bit more of a fight from the Lankans. 26 overs, 57 runs and 4 wickets. No boundary off the bat. Guess who has been the star? Yes, it is that man again. Pat Cummins. Started off from where he left off last night and picked up three more wickets this morning. Lahiru Thirimanne has been adamant not to give his wicket away and even though DRS came to his rescue once, other times he has looked completely solid. No one partnered him though and just when it looked like Dhananjaya would stay he was castled off a brilliant yorker length ball by Jhye Richardson.

  • 30.6 OUT! Timberrrrr! Massive blow from Jhye Richardson. Surprises Dhananjaya with a yorker. Had been bowling all the balls outside off till now and then goes wide of the crease this time and yorks de Silva. The right-hander could not keep this ball out as the bat did not come down in time. Pegs back the off pole of Dhananjaya. Right before a break as well, could be crushing for the Lankans. Half their side back in the hut now. 69/5

  • 25.6 A length ball on middle and leg, Silva looks to nudge this one on the leg side but misses and gets hit on the thigh pad. Nine runs off this over. 62/4
  • 25.5 FOUR LEG BYES! What? How was that leg byes? The ball was way down the leg side and well away from the pads. It swings further away and beats a diving Tim Paine who can't reach the ball and it runs away to the fence. Should have been byes in my opinion.
  • 25.4 Kept out towards cover on this ball outside off from a length.
  • 25.3 Short again and the batsman was initially looking to duck under the ball. Dhananjaya then decides to pull it and adjusts well to keep it along the ground towards mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
  • 25.2 Ripper! A good short length ball on off stump line, Dhananjaya does well to get his bat and glove out of the way as he lets the ball go.

  • Drinks break, the second of the session. Australia have added one more to the wicket column. Thirimanne is looking solid though but will need someone to partner him. • Dhananjaya de Silva walks in at number 6.
  • 17.6 OUT! Gone! Cummins has four! What a brilliant spell this is. Consistently pegging at a line outside off and gets his reward. This one is slightly full outside off and shaping away, Silva is drawn into the cover drive and he gets an outside edge that flies to the region between the first and second slip. Joe Burns though, comes ahead and slightly to his left and pouches this one safely. Sri Lanka in all sorts of trouble here. Cummins currently has 4 wickets for 9 runs. Outstanding stuff! 35/4
  • 17.5 Left alone outside off by the batsman.
  • 17.4 Loud appeal but the umpire says not out. The length ball on middle was angling into the right handed and Roshen is beaten by the swing. He gets rapped on the pads but the umpire does not move. Looks like it was going down leg and hence the Aussies do not review.

The ball did not turn much. It was a flighted delivery on middle, Thirimanne comes forward to defend but gets hit on the pads. The bowler appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Lahiru consults his partner and goes for the review. Hot Spot detects no inside edge. The Hawk Eye shows impact is in line but it is missing the wickets. Thirimanne survives, some positive news for the Lankans. Lyon cannot believe it though and seems to suggest that he did not think that one would bounce over the wickets.
  • Review time...Thirimanne has been struck in front here and the umpire has raised his finger. The southpaw consults his partner and takes it upstairs. Doesn't look like anything other than bounce can save him here. Replays awaited.

  • 9.2 On the pads this time, flicked away to deep square leg. Roshen gets off the mark straightaway with a triple. Good running that, even though Thirimanne had to rush in the end to make his ground. These are also the first runs off Cummins. He had three wickets for 0 runs, quite incredible!
  • Roshen Silva comes in next.
  • 9.1 OUT! Poor from Mendis! Really poor. A fuller length ball outside off and after missing two balls from Cummins in the previous over, this one takes the outside edge and it goes to Joe Burns at second slip at a good height. He is not dropping those. Cummins is elated and why not, he has three now in three overs. Australia have started off brilliantly here but this is not very good stuff from SL. Need to show some fight!

  • 7.4 A length ball on the pads, Mendis misses the flick and gets hit on the thigh pad.

  • 7.2 OUT! Brute of a delivery! Off the top of the bat and to Kurtis Patterson at gully. Chandimal bags a duck. A length ball on off stump and it rises too much suddenly, the ball has too much spice and Chandimal tries to defend it on the off side but to his dismay, the ball takes the shoulder of the bat and lobs up towards gully. Patterson jumps and takes a good catch. Two wickets in the space of 3 balls for Cummins, lovely bowling! Sri Lanka have lost their second and this is a very early blow.
  • 7.1 Slightly short of a length outside off, left alone by Chandimal.
  • Pat Cummins to bowl from the other end.
  • 6.6 A length ball outside off and a good solid defense from the lefty. Maiden to start off. 17/1
  • 6.5 Bouncer! The batsman ducks under it and lets it go.
  • 6.4 Gets this one to shape in slightly off a length and the ball is kept out towards mid on by Thirimanne.
  • 6.3 Oooh... gets this one slightly close to the off stump, Lahiru prods ahead and gets a thick outside edge towards the gully.
  • 6.2 Left alone by the southpaw once more.
  • 6.1 A length ball outside off from Jhye, left alone by Thirimanne.
  • The players are out in the middle. Dinesh Chandimal has come out to join Lahiru Thirimanne. The Aussies are in a huddle. A bit of a tradition is being followed, with a particular celebration for Australia Day. All set to resume play now as the players spread out. 162 behind are the Lankans. Jhye Richardson it will be, to start off proceedings for the day. to Thirimanne. Here we go then... Let's play!
  • What can the Lankans do from here on? Take inspiration from Windies and England and fight. Battle hard. There is plenty of time left in this Test and the pitch is not a minefield. Application will be the key. To give context in the Windies-England Test, 8 wickets fell on Day 1, 18 on Day 2, but - NONE ON DAY 3. If Sri Lanka manage to do what Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich did yesterday or what VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid did way back in 2001 at Eden Gardens, boy - we could have a game on our hands. Hello and a warm welcome to the third day's play of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at the 'Gabba.
  • A look at the scorecard and one would say, it has been Australia's Test so far. They dismantled the Lankans quickly on Thursday and have finished Friday with a lead of 179 and nipped out Karunaratne. But what the scorecard does not show is - opportunities missed by the Lankans. They bowled out of their skins yesterday afternoon, reducing the Aussies to 82/4 as early as the first hour but then lost patience as the heat took toll. Eventually, the Labuschagne-Head stand took the game away from them. That partnership was worth 166, 22 more than what Sri Lanka themselves got.
  • Now, a warm thanks to all those who have come over to follow this game, considering that an interesting New-Zealand India contest is enveloping at the Bay Oval. This is the third day of this Test and often, Day 3 is considered to be a moving day of cricket. 12 wickets fell on Day 1, 9 on Day 2. Will another 9 fall today and end this game?
  • 'No matter where our personal stories began. Reflect on being Australian, celebrate contemporary Australia and recognize our history.' This is the importance of today. January 26. AUSTRALIA DAY. The date of January 26, 1788 marked the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia, although the country got its name in 1808. On New Year's Day 1901, the British colonies of Australia formed a federation, marking the birth of modern Australia. It was not until 1935 that all Australian states and territories adopted use of the term 'Australia Day' to mark the date, and not until 1994 that the date was consistently marked by a public holiday on that day by all states and territories. So to all those reading, WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY.
  • ... DAY 3, AFTERNOON SESSION ...
  • Tough couple of days for Sri Lanka. Bowled out under 60 overs in the first innings, conceded more than 250 on Day 2 and have their backs to the wall at the moment. They still trail by 162 runs with 9 wickets in hand. The middle order needs to step up. Join us at 1 pm local (0300 GMT) on Saturday which is a special day for the Aussies. It is AUSTRALIA DAY and might well be the final day of this Test. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
  • 6 overs were all that Australia got and Tim Paine employed 4 bowlers. Starc sprayed the ball to all parts while Nathan Lyon almost got a wicket. But the star was Pat Cummins who mixed his lines and lengths well and got the wicket.
  • What is happening? The umpires are having a chat with Tim Paine and Travis Head. The former is smiling but the latter seems very serious. Was there something said to someone? Any sledging? We don't know. Might come in the papers tomorrow. For now, it is Australia's wonderful finish to the day.
  • 5.6 OUT! Caught behind! A wicket does fall in the small passage of play! Guess who gets it. Guess who gets it? Not Starc. But that warhorse Pat Cummins. What a beautiful set up in this over. Mixing his lengths, then the lines. Got the ball to come back in and then move away. The last one came back in, this one moved away. Karunaratne was not sure whether to play at that or not and had a push. Got the nick. End of story as Tim Paine did the rest. STUMPS ON DAY 2, SRI LANKA TRAIL BY 162! 17/1

  • 3.2 The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 3.1 On a length outside off, left alone.
  • 2.6 ALMOST A WICKET! Mix-up between the batsmen. Thirimanne pushes this towards mid on and calls for a quick single. The fielder charges in and has a shy at the striker's end but misses. Thirimanne might have been in... 10/0
  • 2.5 Good length delivery on off, Thirimanne defends off the back foot.
  • 2.4 On a length outside off, comes back in, Lahiru misses his tuck and is hit on the pads.
  • 2.3 FOUR BYES! He bowls to the left, he bowls to the right... remember this song? Starc is reminding us of THAT guy... a certain Mitchell GUY Johnson. Very poor delivery from Starc. Bowls way outside leg, Thirimanne looks to flick but misses it. It goes past Tim Paine who dives in vain to his right.
  • 2.2 That is the line. That is the Starc we know. Full and just outside off, swinging in, Thirimanne plays that late and gets a thick inside edge onto his pads.
