  • The morning freshness will be there in the surface and the Indian bowlers will like to gain advantage from that with the new ball. The Australian bowlers have done their job and now it's time for their batsmen to step up and deliver. They will be out soon to commence their innings. Stay tuned.
  • Right then, it took the Aussies just one ball to pick the last Indian wicket. An excellent performance by their bowlers. They were right on the button from the very first ball on Day 1. Their speedsters destroyed India's top order and it required a patient century by Cheteshwar Pujara to provide some respectability to their total. His stands with the lower half were crucial and credit should be given to them for hanging in there.
  • 87.6 OUT! Strangled down the leg side! Hazlewood bowls a gentle loosener, it's short and going down the leg side. Shami tries to play the pull shot but ends up gloving it behind. Paine dives full length to his left and takes a fine catch. They appeal and the finger has gone up. India are all out for 250!
  • It's time to get underway. The Australian players are entering the arena. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are the Indian batsmen. Josh Hazlewood to complete his over.
  • Pitch report - Brendon Julian is by the pitch side and mentions that there is some more coarse grass on the surface than Day 1. He feels that the Indian bowlers will have to get their lengths right. Informs that only 19 from the 250 runs scored yesterday came down the ground which tells the two-paced nature of the wicket. He believes that today will be the best day to bat but the batsmen will have to watch out for the new-ball spell.
  • Cheteshwar Pujara was a satisfied man last evening and has already called it one of his top five knocks. Also, he feels that India have posted a decent total on the board as he found the pitch to be two-paced and not easy for stroke-making. Let's wait and watch how Australia will respond with the bat. First up, they will have to pick India's last wicket.
  • The first day of this Test series lived up to the expectations as we witnessed plenty of action. There was some extraordinary pace bowling, quite a few loose shots, turn and bounce for the spinner and a knock of heroic patience. We're greedy, we want more and we're back for some more dose of quality Test cricket. Hello and welcome everyone, stay with us for further updates.
  • ... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...
  • It's time to sign off. We witnessed 87.5 overs of quality Test cricket and are expecting more of the same on Day 2. India also have the powerhouse in their bowling to succeed and Australia's weakest suit will be put under pressure. Promises to be a riveting contest between bat and ball. Do join us at 1030 local (0000 GMT) for all the action. Cheers!
  • For India, it looks like a sorry scorecard. The top order got blown away in no time and they were reeling at 41/4 at one stage. After that, Cheteshwar Pujara found an ally in Rohit Sharma and together they formed a partnership. Just when it seemed that Sharma will run away with the show, a moment of brain fade resulted in his demise from the crease. Pujara though didn't lose hope and kept on adding partnerships with the lower order. Courtesy his hundred, the visitors have got a respectable total on the board now although it still appears below par on this surface.
  • End of an outstanding day of Test cricket. It all started with the Aussie speedsters derailing the Indian innings in the morning. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were stupendous with their efforts as they brought the visiting team on the mat. All of them picked up a couple of wickets apiece and Nathan Lyon also contributed to the cause by hunting down the dangerous looking Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant.
  • 87.5 OUT! Pujara is well short! Take a bow, Pat Cummins. They needed something magical to dismiss Pujara and it has come through an inspirational piece of fielding by Pat. A fuller length ball on middle, Pujara gently pushes it towards mid on and wants to retain strike for the next over. Hence he takes a chance and calls his partner through. However, Cummins attacks the ball, throws himself up in the air, has just one stump to aim at and he scores a direct hit at the non-striker's end. All that happened in one motion. Wow. It's an incredible effort from someone who has bowled 19 overs in the day under hot conditions. What an athlete! The umpire goes upstairs to check for the run out and Pujara is not even in the frame. End of an outstanding knock and he walks back to a good ovation from the crowd. That also will be Stumps on Day 1.
  • Appeal for a run out! Pat Cummins has scored a direct hit at the non-striker's end. Pujara appears to be short. Let's find out.
  • 87.4 Boom! Another firm shot. A length delivery outside off, Pujara goes hard at it and drills it through mid off for a couple of runs. 250 up for India!
  • 87.3 Pujara is putting on a show. He has fought hard to reach this stage and with nothing much to lose, he is playing his shots freely. A short delivery around off, Che leans back and ramps it over the slip cordon. The third man fielder cuts it off and they take a couple of runs.
  • 87.2 Straighter in line, Pujara clips it through mid-wicket and comes back for the second run.
  • 87.1 In the air, safe! Short in length and outside off, Shami stands tall and plays it over point for a run.
  • 86.6 Short again, just around off, Pujara tries to force it through the line but misses. 243/8
  • 86.5 SIX! Bang! What a knock this is turning out to be! Starc digs in a short delivery outside off, Pujara exercises his arms and slams it over backward point for a biggie. Vital runs.
  • 86.4 FOUR! Finds the gap with perfection. A length ball on middle and leg, Pujara uses his wrists and flicks it beautifully behind square leg. He pierces the gap between fine leg and square leg with precision.
  • 86.3 Fuller in length and on middle, Pujara takes a calculative risk and chips it over mid on. The mid-wicket fielder pulls it back and they take two.
  • 86.2 A rising delivery on off, Pujara goes on his toes and plays it down through point. A run is turned down.
  • 86.1 A length delivery angling away from the batsman, Pujara drives it on the up but fails to beat the cover fielder.
  • 85.6 A back foot defense off the last delivery to end the over. 231/8
  • 85.5 Play and a miss! Short delivery, bowled at a good pace, Shami is early into the pull shot and hence takes a blow on his body.
  • 85.4 Good length ball on off, Shami stays back footed and plays it to covers.
  • 85.3 Shortish and on middle, Pujara swivels and pulls it down to fine leg. Strangely, takes a run.
  • 85.2 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 85.1 Goes on the back foot to a shortish ball and blocks it safely.
  • 84.6 The ball is down the leg side but the batsman still goes after it but misses. 230/8
  • 84.5 Hurries up the batsman with a sharp shorter one. Pujara gloves his pull shot towards square leg and takes a run.
  • 84.4 Short and angling away from the batsman, Pujara rocks back and cuts it through point for a couple of runs.
  • 84.3 Here it is, 16th Test ton for Cheteshwar Pujara, third against Australia and first Down Under! A big moment for him and what a knock he has played in a crisis. Wickets were tumbling around him but he never lost hope and has dragged India's total close to 250 now. Reaches the milestone with a gentle nudge in front of square leg for a couple. The crowd applauds the effort from the Indian number 3.
  • 84.2 Once again there is room on offer outside off and Shami runs it down to third man for a run. Pujara returns on strike!
  • 84.1 Width on offer outside off, Shami flashes and misses.
  • 83.6 FOUR! Pujara moves to 99 now! A much-better pull shot, this. Another short delivery by Josh and he hooks it behind square leg for a boundary. 224/8
  • 83.5 SIX! Pujara breaks into the 90s! Not in a convincing manner but he won't care much at this stage. Takes on the challenge to pull the short delivery but it takes the top edge and flies over fine leg for a maximum. 5000 Test runs for him as well.
  • 83.4 Appeal for a caught behind, not given! Hazlewood alters his length to go short and bowls it outside off. Pujara tries to play the square cut but fails to middle his shot. There is certainly some noise as it goes behind to Paine. He appeals but nothing from the umpire. No DRS taken.
  • 83.3 Fuller and around off, Pujara tries to go hard at it but his bat turns in his hands and he gets it away off the inside edge through square leg.
  • 83.2 Good length delivery in the line of the stumps, Pujara turns it in the gap on the leg side but denies the single. He now needs to change gears and pacers are bowling from both ends.
  • 83.1 Serves it on a driving length outside off, Pujara makes a leave. He is 11 short of his hundred.
  • 82.6 A length ball on off, Shami defends it from the crease to the off side. 214/8
  • 82.5 FOUR! Starc eyes a yorker but ends up slipping a low full toss outside off, Shami reaches out for it and squeezes it through point for a boundary.
  • Mohammed Shami is the new batsman.
  • 82.4 OUT! Bowled 'em! It was only a matter of time. Starc was trying to do this on the previous ball as well but the line wasn't good. But this time, he is right on the money. Full and sharp and straight, Ishant is beaten for pace as he is late in bringing his bat down. It goes right through his defense, brushes his pads and then cannons onto the stumps. Starc gets his second wicket and gives a stare to Sharma. Ishant doesn't respond and heads back. He will have his turn with the ball. Wait for that contest!
  • 82.3 Stars tries to go full but fails to keep it in line of the stumps. Slips down the leg side and Ishant fails to flick it off his pads.
  • 82.2 Misjudges there. He drives a full ball past the gully fielder and wants the second run. But the third man quickly gets around it and only a single is possible. Ishant is exposed to Starc again.
  • 82.1 Edgy! Full and outside off, angling across the batsman, Pujara tries to drive it through covers but gets a big fat outside edge down to third man. Denies the single.
  • 81.6 Defended off the back foot by the batsman. 209/7
  • 81.5 Width on offer outside off, Pujara cracks it off his back foot through covers for a run.
  • 81.4 Full and around off, Pujara flicks it with soft hands through mid-wicket and straightaway shouts two. Completes it with ease.
  • 81.3 Too wide outside off, another easy leave for Che.
  • 81.2 Serves it on a length outside off, Pujara allows it through to the keeper.
  • 81.1 Good length ball around off, angling in and straightening a bit. Right on the button. Pujara defends it off his front foot.
  • Josh Hazlewood to share the new cherry from the other end.
  • 80.6 Comes back to his first ball. Down the leg side, Sharma leaves it alone. 206/7
  • 80.5 Swing again but this was going down leg. Starc dishes one fuller ball down leg, Sharma misses his flick and gets hit on his leg. Going down leg that.
  • 80.4 NOT OUT! Height! Ishant survives. After bowling three down the leg side, Starc bowls one full in line of the stumps. Sharma leaves it alone and the ball comes back in to hit his pads. After an appeal, the umpire raises his finger. Ishant takes the review and the replays show us that it would have gone above the stumps. Good review.
  • Review! Ishant has left one and the ball comes back in to hit his leg. The umpire thinks it's out. Looks out too. Let's find out in the replays...
  • 80.3 3 in a row! Is this some trap? Goes short this time down the leg side, Sharma does not feather it to Paine.
  • 80.2 Down leg again. Starc not getting his line right. Sharma lets it be.
  • 80.1 Errs down the leg side, Sharma covers his stumps and leaves it alone.
  • Second new ball has been taken immediately by Australia. Mitchell Starc is back on to make first use of the nut.
  • 79.6 Flighted on middle, flicked across the line but straight to short leg. 206/7

  • 79.2 Steps down the track to a full ball and drives it to mid off.
  • 79.1 Flatter and on middle, punched back to the bowler.
  • Bowling change. Travis Head to bowl the final over before the second new ball will be due.
  • 78.6 Tossed up ball on middle, nudged in front of square leg for a run. Perfect over for India. Three times they got a couple of runs and a single off the final ball to keep Pujara on strike. 206/7
  • 78.5 Loopy off spinner on middle, Pujara plays it off his pads towards leg gully.
  • 78.4 A touch short and around off, Pujara allows it to spin back in and deflects it through backward point for a couple. Doing it nicely, Che.
  • Physio is out. Cheteshwar Pujara seems to have pulled his hamstrings while turning for the second run. Hopefully, he is fine. He has batted for 208 balls in this tough hot conditions. Brave batting, showing a lot of character.
  • 78.3 Once again Pujara uses his feet and flicks it with the turn to deep square leg. Another couple of runs added to the total.
  • 78.2 Full around off, drifting back in, Pujara inside edges his attempted flick past the left side of Finch at leg slip. Two added to the total. 200 up for India!
  • 78.1 Walks down the track and then wears it on his pads. It lobs up to short leg.
  • 77.6 Bouncer around off, Ishant leans back, drops his wrists and sways away from the line. 199/7
  • 77.5 Finds the gap at extra cover. A nice looking drive from Pujara, he sends this wide of mid off and takes three. Ishant to face the last delivery.
  • 77.4 Back of a length delivery around off, Pujara plays it late and guides it down to deep point. Another run denied.
  • 77.3 Another delivery in the channel outside off, Che has nothing to do with it.
  • 77.2 Outside off, left alone.
  • 77.1 Fullish and outside off, Pujara drives it to the deep cover-point region but turns down the single.
  • 76.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 196/7
  • 76.5 Too full and on middle, Ishant goes hard at it and hits it towards mid on.
  • 76.4 Shout for an lbw, turned down. Sharma lunges to defend but fails to put bat on ball. Lyon is interested but the impact is outside off.
  • 76.3 Works the delivery outside off to the leg side, finds square leg.
  • 76.2 FOUR! That's a fine sweep shot from India's number 9. He goes down on one knee to a full ball and uses his long reach to his advantage. Connects well and sends it whistling to the square leg boundary.
  • 76.1 Fuller and off, flicked with the spin to short mid-wicket.
  • 75.6 Good length ball on off, Che defends it off his back foot to the off side. Over to Ishant now. 192/7
  • 75.5 A bouncer down the leg side, Pujara allows it through. He will like to bowl one more dot ball so that Lyon has six balls to bowl at Ishant.
  • 75.4 Another straight drive by Pujara but this one is not properly timed. He denies the run on offer. That one probably stuck on the surface before reaching the batsman.

  • Review! For caught behind. Paine thinks Ishant has nicked one behind.
  • 74.5 Peach! Through the gate. Ishant looks to block this but the back leg of Sharma has saved him. Kisses his pads and goes to the keeper.
  • 74.4 Loopy ball on leg, Sharma is struck on his thigh pad.
  • 74.3 That ball has taken the inside edge onto the pads.
  • 74.2 Played to the mid-wicket region by Pujara. They pick up a single.
  • 74.1 Loopy ball on off, Che prods forward to block it but gets hit on his leg. Australia appeal but the umpire stays put. The hosts do not take the review. Good decision as that would have gone to miss the leg pole.
  • Ishant Sharma is the new man in.
  • 73.6 OUT! The 62-run stand has been broken by a jaffa of a delivery. Cummins roars in delight. He dishes in a length delivery on middle and gets it to straighten off the seam after landing. Ashwin's intention is to play on the leg side but he doesn't close the face of the bat in time. It takes the outside half of his blade and flies straight into the hands of Handscomb at second slip. • 73.2 Short and outside off, cut behind point for a run.
  • 73.1 Fuller and on off, driven back to the bowler.
  • Drinks break. Finally, a wicket-less hour for India as Ashwin and Pujara are amidst a superb partnership. Both batsmen offered a chance each but the Aussie fielders failed to grab those chances. Now, this stand is growing in confidence and the hosts would be hoping to strike back as soon as possilbe.
  • 72.6 This one is full and outside off, a nicely floated one, Ashwin strides forward and drives it back. 184/6
  • 72.5 Another delivery turning back in from a shorter length on off, Ashwin blocks it from the crease.
  • 72.4 Flatter and quicker on off, defended off the back foot.
  • 72.3 Bat-pad but not carrying to short leg! Slower through the air, full and around off, turning back in, Ashwin tries to defend off the front foot but gets an inside edge onto the pads. It pops out but dies in front of Handscomb.

  • 70.2 Flicks it with the spin on the leg side but finds the fielder in front of square leg.
  • 70.1 Tossed up ball outside off, turning back in from a shorter length outside off, Ashwin is on the back foot as he taps it on the off side.
  • 69.6 This one is angled in and is a little too straight. Pujara flicks it through square leg for a couple of runs. 180/6

  • ... Day 1, Session 3 ...
  • India have limped their way into the Tea break. They lost two wickets in this session as once again their batsmen were quite ordinary with the shot selection. Nathan Lyon was the best bowler on show in the afternoon. He picked up both the wickets and was bowling in good areas. Cheteshwar Pujara is fighting a lone battle but is running out of partners. Currently, Australia are in the driver's seat and they will look to wrap up the innings as quickly as possible. For India, they will be relying on the current partnership to bail them out. Who will succeed? Join us for the last session of the day to find out.

A bit flat this time from Lyon, on middle and off, Rohit thought it was going to be fuller, but it wasn't. Still goes for the swipe across the line. • ... Day 1, Session 2 ...
  • The surface offered good assistance to the seamers early on and credit should be given to the Aussie speedsters for hitting accurate lines and lengths. They kept asking difficult questions to the batsmen and succeeded in creating good pressure. Nathan Lyon has also got good purchase from the pitch as he kept it tidy and was unlucky not to get the wicket of Rahane when he was on 2. Plenty of work needed to be done by the Indian middle-lower order. Do join us in a short while for more action.
  • Excellent morning session for Australia! They lost the toss but then their pacers provided them with the best start possible. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood got into the act immediately and removed the Indian openers cheaply. Pat Cummins hunted down the big fish, Virat Kohli and then after offering a brief resistance, Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed. It's been a very indisciplined batting effort by India. All the four wickets went down due to loose shots attempted and they will be deeply disappointed at the moment.

  • 25.3 This time Sharma is nicely forward to a full ball and pushes it out on the off side.

  • 23.2 A touch flatter and shorter outside off, Sharma plays it late by opening the face of his bat. He runs it down in the direction of third man and takes a couple.

  • Rohit Sharma arrives in the middle with India in tatters. Can he transform his shorter version form in Tests?
  • 20.2 OUT! Add another one to the tally for Australia. Like his teammates, Rahane has also gone chasing a wide delivery. Hazlewood just lands it on a length and wide outside off. Gets a hint of away movement as well. Rahane could have left it easily but goes after it away from his body. Tries driving without his front foot entirely forward and gets a big outside edge behind. Peter Handscomb makes no mistake (this time) at second slip. Good bowling change by Paine. India's misery continues. Their batsmen seem to be in love with driving but they should be doing that on the roads of India, not here.
  • 20.1 Starts this spell with a length ball on middle and leg, going down with the angle, Pujara fails to flick and it goes off his pads to backward square leg. A leg bye taken.

  • 15.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 36/3
  • 15.5 SIX! This is what they have been trying to do. They don't want Nathan Lyon to settle down and hence using their feet a lot. Once again Rahane shimmies down the track to a full ball and swings it with the spin over mid-wicket. Interestingly, Jinx doesn't hit a lot of sixes in T20 cricket but has done so on the first morning of a Test match. Hmm...
  • 15.4 Rahane dances down the track but decides to defend it.

  • 13.5 Allows the ball to spin back in and defends it.
  • 13.4 In the air... DROPPED! Rahane gets an early reprieve. Keaton Jennings of late has made these catches look easy for England. Australia have seen Matt Renshaw also doing the same but he ain't playing. Another off spinner, turning back in with extra bounce, Rahane is well forward as he tries to flick but it goes uppishly and quickly towards short leg. Peter Handscomb fails to hold onto the catch and they cross.
  • 13.3 Once again Che uses his feet to an off spinning delivery and flicks it through mid-wicket for a run.
  • 13.2 Walks froward to flick but fails to middle his shot properly.
  • 13.1 Spin and bounce straightaway. Pujara tries defending but misses and is hit high on the pads.
  • Time for some off spin! Nathan Lyon to roll his arm now.
  • Drinks! What an hour of play for the Aussies. Couldn't have asked for a better start. 3 wickets which includes the big fish, Virat Kohli. India need to be patient. Too many loose shots have caused their downfall.

  • 10.6 In the channel outside off, left alone. 21/3
  • 10.5 The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 10.4 A real gift to Rahane first up. A low full toss, Rahane drives it through covers for a couple of runs.
  • Ajinkya Rahane is in next.
  • 10.3 OUT! Stunner by Khawaja to remove India's best batsman! You need something incredible to dismiss Virat Kohli. Australia are ecstatic, they know the value of this wicket. India in deep trouble. Once again an Indian batsman is caught playing away from the body. Cummins serves this one on a good length and outside off, Kohli goes for a drive and gets a big fat outside towards gully. Now, the real action begins. Khawaja is stationed there. It's to his stronger side. So, he throws himself in the air to his left and takes a one-handed stunner. Superman stuff!
  • 10.2 Once again keeps it full and around off, Kohli comes on the front foot again and pushes it to covers.
  • 10.1 Full and outside off, Virat draws forward and defends it on the leg side.
  • First bowling change. It's time to unleash Pat Cummins into the attack.
  • 9.6 Quite wide outside off, Pujara is in no mood to chase it away from his body. 19/2

  • 7.2 A firm flick by Pujara which goes behind square leg after hitting the short leg fielder. They cross for a run.
  • 7.1 Bowls it outside off, Pujara allows it through.
  • In walks India's talisman who just loves playing at the Adelaide Oval - Virat Kohli.
  • 6.6 OUT! It's edged behind! Murali Vijay is gone. Starc jumps in joy. India have lost both their openers, cheaply. Mitch has been mixing up his length quite nicely. He follows up the previous shorter one by serving a juicy full delivery outside off. Vijay is lured into the drive but the ball doesn't come back in enough. It almost holds its line, takes the outside edge and goes into the gloves of Paine. He was nowhere near to the delivery, his front foot went missing. Vijay is on his way back. Best possible start for Australia after losing the toss. 15/2
  • 6.5 Ooohhh...a rising delivery. Climbing onto the batsman around off, Vijay does well to fend at it with soft hands. As a result, the outside edge doesn't carry and speeds past the diving gully fielder. The batsmen have picked up a couple of runs.

  • 5.5 FOUR! First boundary of this Test match! A loose one though. Vijay is caught playing away from his body. It's full and wide outside off, Murali chases it and slices his drive off the outside half. Luckily for him, it goes aerially but safely through backward point for a boundary.
  • 5.4 In the channel outside off, Murali shoulders arms.
  • 5.3 Delightful drive. Hazlewood bowls it full and around off, Vijay strokes it through extra cover for a couple of runs. Australia won't mind a batsman driving at this stage with the ball moving around.
  • 5.2 Back of a length delivery outside off, Vijay leans back a bit and then makes a leave.
  • 5.1 That's a good patient leave. Hazlewood lands it on a length outside off and it holds its line after pitching, Vijay has nothing to do with it.
  • 4.6 Chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump. Testing over by Starc! 6/1
  • 4.5 Bouncer, well-directed, Pujara fends it away off his gloves. Luckily it doesn't carry to the backward short leg fielder who is standing a few steps behind than the usual position.
  • 4.4 This one is dug in short and wide outside off, an easy leave this time for Pujara.
  • 4.3 Beaten this time! Third delivery in a row is in the off stump channel and going across the batsman with the left-armer's angle. Pujara with no footwork pushes inside the line and misses.

  • 3.4 Nicely played! Full and swinging in from outside off, Vijay takes a confident stride forward and defends it to covers.
  • 3.3 Tennis ball bounce there. Jumping onto the batsman from a back of a length around off, Vijay is on his toes as he defends it down.
  • 3.2 The line is straight from Josh, Pujara rotates his wrists and works it towards short leg. Harris there fails to stop it and it deflects towards mid-wicket. Pujara completes a run.
  • 3.1 Angles in a full length ball on middle and leg, Pujara plays it off his pads towards mid on.
  • 2.6 Inswinger, pitching full and on middle, Pujara flicks it across the line behind square leg. The fine leg fielder cuts it off and Che is off the mark with a single. 5/1
  • 2.5 Another delivery in the corridor of uncertainty, leaving the batsman with the angle, Che guards his stumps and makes a leave.
  • 2.4 Building good pace, Starc. Slants across a short length delivery outside off, at 145.6 kph, Pujara allows it through.

  • Cheteshwar Pujara is the number 3 batsman.
  • 1.6 OUT! Rahul is caught at third slip! Early blow to India. This is beautiful bowling by Hazlewood. He's getting the ball to move both ways and hunts down one of the Indian openers. Serves it full enough outside off to entice a drive from Rahul. But it's an away swinger which takes a thick outside edge and settles into the big hands of Finch. KL's poor form continues. 3/1
  • 1.5 Good length delivery angling down the leg side, Rahul tries working it around but misses.
  • 1.4 Shaping back into the batsman, Vijay goes at it with soft hands and gets an inside edge. It probably brushes his pads and rolls towards wide mid on. Vijay is off the mark with a single.
  • 1.3 This is extraordinary bowling. Last delivery nipping back in, this one left the batsman. It pitches around off and moves away, Vijay pushes inside the line without much footwork and is beaten.
  • 1.2 Bat-pad but it's wide of short leg. Nervy start for Murali. This one seams back in from a length around off. Vijay tries to defend it with a straight bat but it takes the inside half of the bat and pops out off his pads.
  • 1.1 Nice start from Josh. Bowls it full and angling in around off, Vijay is forward just a bit as he defends.
  • Josh Hazlewood to share the new ball from the other end.
  • 0.6 Zippy delivery, on a length outside off, Rahul strides forward and then lets it go at the last moment. Good beginning, for both teams. 2/0

  • 0.1 First ball of the series is nice and straight on a good length, KL Rahul gets behind the line and blocks it safely.
  • Out come the Australian players on the field. Murali Vijay and KL Rahul are the Indian openers. Mitchell Starc has the brand new cherry in his hand. Three slips and a gully in place along with a short leg. It's show time...
  • The players are out in the centre for the national anthem. We're minutes away from the first ball.
  • Australia's skipper, Tim Paine says that he would have batted too. Mentions that the boys are excited and are up for the challenge. On his playing XI, he informs that the three fast bowlers and Lyon can do the job for them. On their batting, he replies that they have had good domestic seasons and are in form.
  • India's skipper, Virat Kohli says that they will bat first. Mentions that the pitch is nice and hard with a nice covering of grass. States that adding runs on the board is always handy. Reckons that this is a difficult challenge to play in Australia. Further says that they are not taking anything for granted and lightly. On him playing in Adelaide, he says that he loves coming here and getting runs. Ends by saying that Rohit Sharma gets the nod as he can play aggressive cricket towards the end and can bat well with the tail.
  • TOSS - India have won the toss and will bat first.
  • Pitch report - Brendon Julian is near the playing area giving his thoughts about the surface. Starts by informing that the drop-in pitch has been used in Adelaide for the last 5 years. Adds that there is a good covering of grass and it will seam a little bit at the start but it will be slow on the first day. Mentions that the surface will quicken up as the Test progresses. Advises that as a batsman, if you get through the first hour, sessions 2 and 3, followed by the next two days will be a batting paradise.
  • The first match of a series is always gripping. Just like a blank canvas with an artist waiting to work on it. You never know what is to come. Hello and welcome to our coverage. It's game time. Australia go in with the extra specialist batsman while for the visitors it's going to be a shootout between Rohit and Vihari. Never before have India come Down Under and been favorites as we mentioned earlier but no game has ever been won on paper. Both teams have a lot to prove and it will certainly take some gritty cricket to come on top. Don't go too far away. Toss coming up shortly...
  • Oh, this feeling of nostalgia. There's something special about covering or watching a Test match played Down Under. This is the first occasion in my lifetime, India are starting as favourites. They're supposed to win their first-ever Test series in Australia and more than their ranking and recent supremacy in this format, it's because the Aussies are a depleted unit. The Kohli-led team though has tried its best to downplay the situation by calling the Kangaroos a tough nut to crack in their own backyard. Hmm... no one wants to take the pressure of a favourite tag these days, so what it's the number one Test team, so what it's the 'best touring Indian team in last 15 years'... Anyway, enough talk. The Adelaide Oval is ready. Australia are ready. India are ready. Fans are ready. Then what are we waiting for??? Let's dive in. More updates coming your way...

Australia Vs India Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Update 1414 local - Good news. The rain has stopped and the covers are off. The players are walking on the field and we are all set to resume. Join us on the other side.
  • Update 1354 local - It will be a delayed start to this session as tweeted by Cricket Australia. Although the good news is that the covers are starting to come off. Stay tuned.
  • Update 1324 local - It is pelting down out there. We though still have time for Lunch to get over. Let us hope it passes away and we resume on time.
  • Hang on! The players were out in the middle and then the umpires decided to go off for LUNCH. Tim Paine is seen arguing with the officials. Maybe, he's expressing his disappointment. Australia kept on batting under the drizzle and when it's India's turn, they have decided to go off. The visitors won't complain. Do join us in a short while for the afternoon session.
  • A good bowling performance as a unit by India. They started on an ordinary note yesterday morning but quickly hit the right chords. Ishant, Shami and Bumrah bowled with a lot of intensity while Ashwin also impressed one and all by picking a 3-wicket haul. They now have got a little advantage and would like to bat better than their first innings to swell the lead. Stay tuned, the Indian openers will be out soon.
  • Australia's weakest suit is their batting and that once again let them down. However, there was a marked improvement shown by the lower-middle order, in terms of willingness to stick around and gut it out. Peter Handscomb and Travis Head batted decently and Australia would hope for their top order to come good while batting last.
  • So, finally India have managed to bowl out Australia but not before they reduced the deficit down to 15 runs. The 31-run stand between Travis Head and Nathan Lyon was the need of the hour for the Aussies and they won't be too disappointed at the moment. A word of praise for Head. He played a beautiful patient knock to equal his best Test score and proved that his Test saving innings in Dubai wasn't an aberration.
  • 98.4 OUT! India have the lead! Shami takes two in two. Another loose shot. It is short and outside off, Hazlewood throws his bat at it, gets an outside edge and Pant behind does the rest. Poor Lyon is left stranded. AUSTRALIA BOWLED OUT FOR 235!
  • Josh Hazlewood is the new man in.
  • 98.3 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Shami gets the well-set Travis Head. He does not surpass his highest score. But a very important knock by him comes to an end. Shami bowls it outside off and it is on a length. Head maybe should have left the delivery but he ends up chasing it away from his body. The ball takes the outside edge and goes into the hands of Pant who accepts it. The bowling change has worked and the Indians will be relieved to break this stand. Australia are still 15 runs behind and have only a wicket in hand.
  • 98.2 Now works it with the angle towards square leg and takes a single.
  • 98.1 SIX! TAKEN! In the crowd that is! What a shot by Lyon. He says, enough of ducking under short balls. Takes on the challenge of pulling it, connects well and it sails over the square leg fence. Lyon is playing a gem here.
  • Double bowling change. Mohammed Shami is into the attack.
  • 97.6 Fires it on off, it is the carrom ball again, straightens a touch. Lyon tries to defend but the ball goes off the outside edge towards point for a run. 228/8
  • 97.5 Head straightaway dances down the track and works it towards Pujara at mid-wicket. He misfields and a run is taken. Head has now equalled his highest score in Tests.
  • 97.4 The carrom ball on middle, Lyon flicks it through mid-wicket for a run.
  • 97.3 On the stumps, it is kept out.
  • 97.2 FOUR! Lyon brings out the shot which he loves the most, the sweep shot. Does not get it off the middle as it flies off the top edge to the fine leg fence. The trail is only 25 now.
  • 97.1 Flatter and on middle, Lyon pushes it back to the bowler.
  • Ravichandran Ashwin is on.
  • 96.6 That was clipped away right off the middle, it went quickly to the man at deep square leg. A run taken, which means Lyon will be on strike again. 221/8
  • 96.5 Hit on the up to the man at mid off.
  • 96.4 Just like that! However, this one was a good delivery. It was first angled around off, then leaves the batsman after pitching. Lyon has a poke at it and gets beaten.
  • 96.3 Back of a length around middle, Lyon nudges it towards mid-wicket. He has played the balls bowled on the stumps well, it is only the balls bowled outside off which he has to stop fetching.
  • 96.2 Around middle and off, Lyon plays it with a closed face towards mid-wicket.
  • 96.1 Another bouncer to Lyon, he has no problems in ducking under it.
  • 95.6 Shot! Another triple! Bumrah is guilty of bowling a little too full here. Lyon strokes it through mid off and takes three. 220/8
  • 95.5 No yorker, bowls it on a length around off, the batsman is solid in defense.
  • 95.4 Top class bouncer! Nathan does really well to duck under it. It was fast and well-directed. A yorker now to follow it up? Lyon will surely be expecting one.
  • 95.3 Shuffles across and then works it with the angle through square leg for another single.
  • 95.2 Good length on off, the batsman defends it onto the ground.
  • 95.1 Back of a length around off, Head pushes it to covers.
  • Revised session times (in local time) - 1st session - 1230-1330, Lunch - 1330-1410, 2nd session - 1410-1625, Tea - 1625-1645, Third session - 1645-1830.
  • 94.6 A bumper to end the over! Good change in length by Ishant. Lyon though ducks under it. 216/8
  • 94.5 OHHH! This one pitches and then moves away from around off, Lyon goes for a loose drive but gets beaten. Head does the right thing by walking up to him and having a word with the offie.
  • 94.4 On the pads again, it is worked towards square leg for a run. Into the 70s now is Head.
  • The rain is back! However, for now the umpires are happy to continue.
  • 94.3 Back of a length around off, it is kept out.
  • 94.2 Nicely played! Easy pickings for a batsman of Head's class as it was on middle and on a fuller length. It is flicked through mid-wicket and a couple taken.
  • 94.1 Good length outside off, left alone.
  • 93.6 Trademark Bumrah! A yorker around middle and leg. Lyon just about manages to get bat on it. He gets an inside edge onto his pads. An appeal follows but the umpire is not interested. 213/8
  • 93.5 Goes fuller this time, Lyon strokes it to mid on. A good looking shot for no runs though.
  • 93.5 WIDE! Another bumper, this time though it is too high and a wide signaled.
  • 93.4 EDGY FOUR! First boundary of the day and these are handy runs for Australia. Trail below 40 now. Good length around off, Lyon tries to defend but the ball takes an outside edge and goes down to the vacant third man region. Boundary.
  • 93.3 BEATEN! Lyon once again hangs his bat out to a delivery he can leave. The ball though whizzes past the outside edge.
  • 93.2 Good length again on off, Lyon strokes it to covers.
  • 93.1 On the shorter side but outside off, Lyon evades it easily.
  • 92.6 The batsman defends it from within the crease. 208/8
  • 92.5 Fuller on middle, Head times it to mid on.
  • 92.4 Top shot but it still does not get to the boundary. Deserved four that one. Full and on off, Lyon drives it square on the off side. Ashwin gives it a chase, the ball slows down as it nears the rope. Three taken.
  • 92.3 Length again but it is outside off, the batsman shoulders arms to it.
  • 92.2 Slightly straighter again, Head works it around the corner and takes a single.
  • 92.1 Back of a length around off, the batsman works it with the angle to mid-wicket.
  • Ishant Sharma to continue.
  • 91.6 Attacks the stumps this time and Lyon strokes it to mid on. 204/8
  • 91.5 BEATEN! A shot which Lyon could have avoided. Length ball outside off, Nathan has a feel for it and gets beaten.
  • We are back after the delay! Nathan Lyon is the new batsman, he will be on strike and Bumrah has 2 balls to go in this over. Here we go...
  • Update 12.14 pm local - Play to begin in 16 minutes and Lunch to be taken at 1.30 pm local. So we will have an hour of play in this session, weather permitting that is.
  • Update 11.49 am local - Scratch the last update. We really got too hopeful after watching the covers getting dragged off. The rain has returned. Seems it's going to be a stop-start day. Really annoying.
  • Update 11.46 am local - The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off. The pitch cover though stays as it is. Won't be long before the play resumes. Stay with us.
  • Update 11.33 am local - And with that wicket, the heavens have opened up yet again. Nathan Lyon was about to come out but the umpires have decided to call for covers. The players head out to the pavilion. It's been that kind of a morning. Let's hope the rain eases out soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
  • 91.4 OUT! Spot on bowling, Bumrah. Great execution, it's wider, it's fuller and Starc falls for it. Jasprit provides width and Starc's eyes lit up. The Australian number 9 tries to go big, swings his bat hard but only manages a thick outside edge behind to Pant. The Indians are celebrating. Early success for them. Starc must be disappointed, he has the ability to bat and just needed to partner Head there. The deficit is 46 runs and any lead for the tourists on this surface will be handy.
  • 91.3 On a length around off, Starc covers the line and defends it towards mid on.
  • 91.2 Once again the length is on the shorter side around off, Starc keeps his weight on the back foot and pushes it out to covers.
  • 91.1 Back of a length delivery around off, Head stands back and helps it in the gap at mid-wicket for a run.
  • 90.6 Edgy runs! This is on a length and around off, Head plays inside the line, he gets an outside edge through the slip cordon. The ball though stops as it reaches towards the fence. Three taken, trail now below 50. 203/7
  • 90.5 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • Some visible drizzle in the air. Please rain gods, we beg you, please stay away...
  • 90.4 BEAUTY! This is what they need to bowl on a consistent basis! Good length around off, it pitches and then moves away. Head is squared up as he tries to defend, the ball beats the bat, hits the thigh pad and goes towards gully.
  • 90.3 200 up! Australia 'just' 50 shy now! On the pads, Starc fails to flick, the ball hits his pads and rolls towards square leg for a leg bye.
  • 90.2 A couple! Full and on off, Starc chips it over mid off, once again due to the overnight rain, the outfield is quite slow. Only a brace.
  • 90.1 Slightly shorter in length around off, it is guided to point.
  • 89.6 A good nut to end the over! Length around middle, it comes in with the angle. Starc tries to defend but gets an inside edge onto his pads. The ball rolls towards the leg side and a run is taken. 197/7
  • 89.5 Play and a miss! A loose shot by Starc, that is how he plays though. If it is up there, he will go for it. Full and outside off, Starc throws his bat at it with minimal foot movement. Luckily for him, he gets beaten.
  • 89.4 Changes the angle and comes around the wicket. Lands it just ahead of a length. The batsman is not sure whether to come forward or play from the crease. Head tries to keep it out awkwardly but gets an inside edge down to fine leg. A single, his first run today.
  • 89.3 Once again it is slightly shorter and the line is a touch straighter. Starc works it through square leg for a run.
  • 89.2 Accurately hits the length again around middle, MS goes back and defends it onto the ground. Bumrah needs to bowl a touch fuller here, give the ball more chance to do its bit.
  • 89.1 Back of a length, angling away from the batter. It zips off the surface. Starc stands tall and guides it to point.
  • Jasprit Bumrah to bowl from the other end.
  • 88.6 First runs for today! A confident stroke that! It is a length ball around off, Starc punches it on the up past the diving fielder at mid off. The outfield ain't that fast though so the ball does not get to the boundary. Three taken. 194/7
  • 88.5 Drags his length back a little, it once again moves away a touch. Due to the length though, Starc can adjust and guide it to point.
  • 88.4 Does get some swing this time and it turns out to be a beauty of a delivery! Ishant once again slants it into the batsman at first. Starc has to play at it, as he tries to do so with a forward defense. The ball though pitches and moves away, beats the outside edge of Starc's bat.
  • 88.3 Better! This is slightly ahead of a length around off, Starc pushes it back towards the bowler. Went at that with hard hands did Starc. No swing though for Ishant in the first three balls.
  • 88.2 Another one down the leg side and once again Starc misses the flick. He is trying to swing it away from the left-hander but it is just going down with the angle.
  • 88.1 No swing on the first delivery though. A loosener to begin with by Ishant. It is down the leg side, Starc misses the flick.
  • We are all set for the game to begin! The players make their way out along with the umpires. The Aussie batsmen, Travis Head and Mitchell Starc will resume their innings. Ishant Sharma to start the proceedings for India. It is cloudy here and that just might aid the bowlers. Let us see if there is some swing available...
  • Update 10.50 am local - Good news, folks! If there is no further rain, play is expected to start in around 25 minutes from now. Fingers crossed. Stay tuned...
  • The reserve umpire, Gerard Abood is giving an interview. He starts by saying the rain has stopped now, they are not sure if more is coming but they are not bothered about that at the moment. Mentions the umpires will make their way out in some time and assess the pitch and ground conditions. Informs the groundsmen have started doing their work. Ends by saying they can extend play by an hour today and also add half an hour to the rest of the days to make up for the lost time.
  • Rishabh Pant who is giving an interview says he is loving Australia at the moment. He feels the wickets here are good for stroke making. Mentions his father always wanted him to play cricket and he has been doing that since childhood. Further adds his dad was also a wicket-keeper. States he has had good performances in the domestic circuit due to which he is in the team. Admits debuting for India was the best feeling. Ends by saying he is still learning from MS Dhoni and it is an amazing feeling to play for the country.
  • Coming to how the game is poised - the visitors have their noses in front, by not a lot though. They would look to bundle the home side out quickly and hope for a decent lead. The hosts, on the other hand, would like to get as close as possible first and then try to surpass the Indian total. Travis Head, the local lad, will have to do the bulk of the scoring and the home side will hope, the tail can hang around with him. The 'moving day' should probably give us a fair idea to which way the match is heading.
  • Hello and welcome to the coverage of Day 3. We have bad news to begin with, the clouds here have opened up and the pitch is under cover at the moment. We would be having a DELAYED START. However, the weather is expected to clear out as the day progresses and let us hope we do not have to wait a lot.
  • ... Day 3, Session 1 ...
  • Right then. 59 is the deficit. How much ever Australia make, this will still be a one-inning shootout. Whether Australia get a lead or not, India will have the advantage as the hosts will have to bat last on a turning wicket. How much can the home side add? Not much batting left. Join us on Saturday at 10.30 am local (0000 GMT) for all the action from Day 3. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
  • How many times have we seen Ravichandran Ashwin do well outside Asia? Today was one of those few occasions. He was the one who opened the floodgates, getting rid of Harris, Marsh and Khawaja in the space of 57 balls. That pegged the Aussies back and then later on, Bumrah and Ishant made further inroads. Mohammed Shami had an off day - he seemed to have hurt his shoulder and lost control totally.
  • Superlative bowling from India. They have bowled 88 overs, picked up 7 wickets and conceded runs at just over 2 an over. They were loose in the first session, not quite hitting the right lines but post Lunch, they hit their spot. They did not concede many easy runs and Australia had to work so hard that 250 looked like 400.
  • After some wayward bowling in the morning session, India bounced back post Lunch. Australia were reduced to 127/6 from 45/1 and a 50-run stand between Travis Head and Pat Cummins somewhat saved the face for the home side. The former is the key - the longer he bats, the closer Australia will get to India's total.
  • Talking about the day overall, Australia just had to come out for one ball, with Hazlewood getting rid of Shami. But Ishant then gave India a terrific start, removing Finch on the third ball. There was a bit of a fight, from debutant Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja, with a 45-run stand - but once that was broken, familiar problems grappled the Aussies.
  • India's day but Australia are hanging in there. After battling out two tough sessions, the final one seemed the easiest to bat with the ball getting softer. 74 runs came in 33 overs but three wickets were also lost.
  • 87.6 And a back foot punch towards point to end the day. STUMPS ON DAY 2, AUSTRALIA TRAIL BY 59! 191/7
  • 87.5 Much better and the crowd applauds. Full and around off, Head gets right behind the delivery, covers the line and defends.
  • 87.4 Another play and a miss. Head seems very nervous. Shami is bowling a very good last over, just dangling the carrot. Full and outside off, TH looks to drive but misses.
  • 87.3 Better. Leaves this one alone outside off.
  • 87.2 Jaffa! That came back in a long way. On a length outside off, Travis looked to punch it through the off side but got beaten by the late movement. Could have left it alone. Just 4 balls remaining in the day...
  • 87.1 Full and just outside off, Head defends watchfully.
  • Final over of the day then.
  • 86.6 Down the leg side, TH tucks it fine for a run. The deficit is now 59. 191/7
  • 86.5 Fuller in length this time, around off, Travis walks across and flicks it towards short mid-wicket.
  • Another piece of information - even if Australia get bowled out in this over, which is technically difficult, India will not come out to bat tonight.
  • 86.4 On a length around off, punched back to the bowler once more.
  • 86.3 Very full, nice and straight, around off, Head walks forward into the shot and offers it respect.
  • 86.2 Comes forward again and blocks.
  • 86.1 Full and around off, solidly defended.
  • 85.6 Comes in a long way from outside off, but is well wide to be left alone. 190/7
  • 85.5 Short and wide outside off, slashed hard to deep point - just a single. Moves to 60, does Head.
  • 85.4 On a length again, outside off, punched towards point.
  • 85.3 Similar length to the first ball, punched to deep point for a single.
  • 85.2 Outside off, punched towards cover.
  • 85.1 FOUR! A useful boundary! A loosener from Shami, on a length wide outside off, Starc just angles his blade behind point and Ishant Sharma gives it up pretty early.
  • Mohammed Shami is back for a late burst. 14-5-45-0 so far. He has got 2 overs tonight.
  • 84.6 'WAIT THERE!' yells TH as he gets across and pushes it back to Bumrah. 184/7
  • 84.5 Outside off, a touch short, Travis slashes but misses.
  • 84.4 A bouncer now, Head ducks.
  • 84.3 Full and outside off, driven towards mid off.
  • You sharp guys must have noticed but still informing - We are into extended time with around 4 overs left.
  • 84.2 Around off, tight lines, solidly defended.
  • 84.1 On a length around off, defended back to the bowler.
  • 83.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 184/7
  • 83.5 The straighter one, outside off, left alone.
  • 83.4 Tossed up again, this time MS defends.
  • 83.3 LEADING EDGE, SAFE! Starc is running out of patience. Full and outside off, Mitchel throws the kitchen sink at it and has a heave-ho. Is nowhere near the pitch of the ball and gets a leading edge. Luckily for him, it balloons over Ishant Sharma at backward point. Two runs taken.
  • 83.2 Fuller in length, Starc gets a big stride forward to defend it to the off side.
  • 83.1 Landed around middle and leg, defended back to the bowler.
  • 82.6 Full and outside off, pushed straight to cover. 182/7
  • 82.5 Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 82.4 Down the leg side, Travis misses out on a freebie.
  • 82.3 Outside off, a touch short, a flash and a miss.
  • 82.2 A touch short, punched back to the bowler.
  • 82.1 Down the leg side, worked through mid-wicket for a couple. The deficit is now 68.
  • 81.6 Pushes this towards deepish mid on for a run. 180/7
  • 81.5 WAS THAT A CHANCE? Perhaps. Full and around middle, Starc gets a big stride forward to defend. The ball bounces, takes the inside edge and goes to short leg who is late to react. Wrings his hand in pain as the batsmen take a single.
  • 81.4 Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.
  • 81.3 Outside off, punched towards cover.
  • 81.2 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 81.1 Full and outside off, Head comes down the track and pushes it towards long off for a single. Looks like India felt that was pad first as Pant went up in an appeal but the umpire is not interested.
  • Interesting. Ravichandran Ashwin to share the second new ball.
  • 80.6 On middle and off, punched towards cover. 177/7
  • 80.5 Down the leg side, flick shot missed.
  • 80.4 Outside off, played straight to point.
  • Mitchell Starc comes in next at number 9, replacing Cummins. This could be all over in a jiffy.
  • 80.3 OUT! LBW it is and Australia lose Cummins and a review. A lovely delivery from Bumrah with the new nut. Similar to how Jos Buttler had been dismissed in the England series recently. A length ball outside off, Cummins shoulders arms, thinking that it is wide enough to be left alone. But the ball darts back in off the seam and hits him on the back thigh. Bumrah appeals and umpire Nigel Llong raises his finger! Cummins has a chat with Head and then signals for the review. No point in checking for the impact as no shot was offered. Ball Tracking shows the ball to be hitting the stumps. Very good delivery to break a very good stand. Australia still trail by 73 but they are looking a lot better than what they were, an hour ago. Cummins, take a bow.
  • Plumb LBW! That looks dead. Cummins though, has taken it upstairs...
  • 80.2 The batsman chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump again.
  • 80.1 A wide ball outside off, left alone.
  • THE SECOND NEW BALL HAS BEEN TAKEN. Not surprising at all. Around 8 overs left. Jasprit Bumrah to make the first use of it. 16-7-31-1 so far.
  • 79.6 That ball has taken the inside edge onto the pads. 177/6
  • 79.5 50-RUN STAND IS UP! Down the leg side, Cummins looks to defend but the ball spins in, takes the inside edge and rolls down the leg side. A single taken which brings about a warm applause from the crowd. A smile comes up on Cummins' face as well as he walks across after completing the run, to shake hands with his partner. Very good partnership.
  • 79.4 Fuller in length, pushed towards mid-wicket.
  • 79.3 Full and outside off, Pat looks to defend but the ball spins in, takes the inside edge an hits him on the groin.
  • 79.2 Full and around off, Cummins pads it towards leg gully. There is an LBW appeal which is turned down.
  • 79.1 Back of a length outside off, punched towards short mid-wicket.
  • 78.6 Fuller in length this time, driven back to the bowler. That should be the end of Vijay for the day. 176/6
  • 78.5 Outside off, a tad short, punched back to the bowler.
  • 78.4 Fullish, pushed past the bowler for a run.
  • 78.3 Outside off, punched away for a single.
  • 78.2 Full and around middle, pushed back to the bowler.

  • 77.5 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 77.4 Full and around off, Cummins goes back and works it right in front of short leg.

  • 77.2 Full and outside off, watchfully defended.

  • 76.3 Outside off, left alone.
  • 76.2 Full and outside off, driven back to the bowler.
  • 76.1 Around off, defended from the crease.
  • 75.6 Full again, well kept out. 170/6
  • 75.5 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 75.4 HOW DID THAT MISS THE STUMPS? Risky leave from Cummins. The ball is around off and Pat leaves it alone, thinking it will hit his pad and he cannot be adjudged LBW as the ball will spin down the leg side. The ball does spin in but it goes between bat and pad, nearly hits the leg stump and hits Pant's pads!
  • 75.3 Full and around off, watchfully defended.
  • 75.2 The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.

  • 72.5 Tossed up outside off, Cummins leans into the shot and drives it through the covers for a couple.
  • 72.4 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 72.3 FIFTY FOR HEAD! A crucial one and a valiant one at that. Just his second in Tests. He has battled hard and is trying to keep Australia in the contest. Gets there with a punch through the covers for a single.
  • 72.2 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 72.1 Outside off, pushed towards point.
  • Well, well, well. A fifth bowler has been introduced with the second new ball around the corner. It is not Rohit Sharma. It is... MURALI VIJAY.
  • 71.6 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 166/6
  • 71.5 More extra runs. This one spins a long way from outside off, Pat misses his flick and the keeper is unable to collect. Goes past leg gully as well and two byes result.
  • 71.4 The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 71.3 Full and around leg, worked through square leg for a single.
  • 71.2 HOW DID THAT MISS THE STUMPS? Ashwin nearly had his fourth there. Flighted outside off, Cummins came forward to defend, thinking that he had covered the line but the ball spun in, missed the outside edge and just eluded the left bail! Three byes taken towards fine leg.
  • 71.1 Landed outside off, drifting in, watchfully defended.
  • 70.6 FOUR! Wow, lovely straight drive. Growing in confidence, Head. Fullish delivery in line of the stumps, Travis brings down a straight bat and thumps it down the ground for a beautiful boundary. 160/6
  • 70.5 The line is straight and Travis turns it off his pads to mid-wicket.
  • 70.4 FOUR! Crunching drive by Head and he is now 7 short of a half century. He leans into a length ball and drives it crisply through covers. Kohli puts in a dive to his left but it's outside his reach. A boundary results.
  • 70.3 A length ball on off, shaping back in, Cummins tries playing straight but gets an inside edge to mid-wicket for one.
  • 70.2 Fuller this time and drifting down the leg side, Head fails to flick and it goes off his pads to square leg. They cross and it's given as a run. Maybe, some inside edge. Deficit is under 100 now.
  • 70.1 Good length delivery angling back into the batsman from outside off, Head is solidly behind the line in defense.
  • Drinks break. Another 2-wicket hour for India as they are into the Aussie tail. However, the likes of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are no mug with the bat. The current pair has batted with intent and is trying to be positive. India continue to be on the money with the ball and will love to wrap up the Australian innings before Stumps today. Let's see what happens next.

  • 66.6 Short and wide outside off, Head rocks back and slaps it square of the wicket on the off side for a single. 145/6
  • 66.5 Gentle hands. On a length and outside off, Cummins taps it to the left of the point fielder and crosses for a hesitant single.

  • 66.3 Straighter in line, Head works it in the gap at mid-wicket for one.
  • 66.2 In the channel outside off, Head allows it through to the keeper.
  • 66.1 Fuller in length outside off, Head drives it through covers and Kohli gives it the chase. Shami also puts in a run from mid off and does well to pull it back. He, then, parries it to his skipper who slips a bit while returning the throw. The batsmen have picked up a couple of runs.

  • Pat Cummins walks in next with Australia trailing by 123 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin is also brought back into the attack, for the first time in this session.
  • 62.6 OUT! Edged and gone! Beautiful delivery by Ishant. He was probing around the off stump line and eventually gets the better of the Aussie skipper. Just lands it on a length around off, Paine has to play the line as he tries to defend. But to his bad luck, the ball nips away ever so slightly to gather a faint outside edge. Pant makes no mistake and India are into the Australian tail now. 50th Test wicket for Ishant against Australia, only the second team against whom he has achieved this feat. 127/6
  • 62.5 Hits the deck hard and bowls in a shortish ball on off, Paine rocks back and defends it towards the bowler.

  • 62.1 Fullish and on middle, angling in, Paine defends it by cleanly.
  • Ishant Sharma is back on.
  • 61.6 Naahhh... Bumrah thinks differently. He eyes a yorker but ends up serving a low full toss on middle, Head clips it through wide mid on. Ashwin gets his hands to hit and saves two runs for his side. 127/5
  • 61.5 Once again there is a nice movement back into the left-hander, Head gets behind the line and punches it in the direction of the bowler. Watch out for the away swinger, Travis!
  • 61.4 Movement back into the batsman from a length outside off, Head does well to play it late as he keeps it out to covers.
  • 61.3 A touch short and on middle, Travis works it on the leg side but finds mid-wicket.
  • 61.2 Again a length delivery on off, Travis mistimes his off drive to mid off.
  • 61.1 Lands it on a length around off, from 'round the wicket, Head pushes it through the line but finds the cover fielder.

  • 60.4 Better this time. Presents the full face of the ball and middles his forward defensive shot.
  • 60.3 A little bit of inward movement from a length outside off, Paine prods forward to defend but gets an inside edge onto the pads.
  • 60.2 FOUR! Nicely played! This was the shot that Peter Handscomb probably attempted but edged. Width on offer outside off, Tim camps back and guides it past gully for a boundary.
  • 60.1 On a good length and around off, Paine defends it by covering the line of delivery.
  • 59.6 A delightful cover drive by Head but he finds the cover fielder. 121/5
  • 59.5 A single after 3 overs. Fullish and on middle, Paine flicks it in the gap at square leg for a run. The Aussie skipper is off the mark.
  • 59.4 Incredible delivery! Bumrah hurls it on a good length just around off. Paine tries his best to defend by getting forward but the ball changes its direction after hitting the deck and moves away to beat the outside edge.
  • 59.3 Hint of reverse there as Bumrah gets it to curl back into the batsman from around off. Paine just gets his bat down in time and digs it out off the inner edge.
  • 59.2 Angles in a length ball around off, Tim defends it off his front foot.
  • 59.1 Width on offer outside off, Paine taps it down to point. Early loud call of 'wait in' from the Aussie skipper and then he shouts no as the ball goes to the fielder.

  • 57.5 Too full and on off, angling in, Paine defends it near his back pad. Slight appeal from the Indians as they thought it hit the pad first but nothing from the umpire.
  • 57.4 A length ball angling back into the right-hander outside off, Paine covers the line and defends it with a straight bat.
  • Tim Paine's turn to bat.
  • 57.3 OUT! Bumrah strikes this time! Handscomb is out of here. He tried hard in the middle but never looked convincing at the crease. A shortish length delivery has been delivered outside off, Handscomb leans back inside the crease with the intention to run it down to third man. But he fails to middle his shot and edges it into the mitts of Pant. The 33-run stand is broken and the Indian players are ecstatic. The deficit currently is 130.
  • 57.2 Shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 57.1 Huge shout for an lbw! Bumrah spears in a deadly full ball on middle and leg, Handscomb falls over in his attempt to flick and misses the ball. He is thudded on the pads, they appeal but nothing from the umpire. His skipper looks at him and Jasprit gestures that it's going down leg. Good boy. We have seen many bowlers wasting reviews.
  • 56.6 Fractionally short in length and around off again, Head pushes his weight on the back leg and defends it to the off side. 120/4
  • 56.5 Around off on a length, Head defends it from the back foot to the off side.
  • 56.4 Shortish and around off, defended from the crease to point. It rolled in the gap and they crossed for one.
  • 56.3 Over the wicket for the right-hander, it's on a good length outside off, Handscomb pushes it off his front foot to covers.
  • 56.2 Handscomb has played that off the front foot and into the ground.

  • Mohammed Shami to continue from this end. Two slips in place as the bowler runs in from 'round the wicket...

  • 55.4 Switches to over the wicket for the right-hander and serves a length ball on off, Handscomb sticks inside the crease in defense.
  • 55.3 A touch short on this occasion, on off, Head gets the opportunity to come behind the line as he turns it behind square leg for a run.
  • 55.2 Once again the line is just around off and Travis is very solid in his forward defense.
  • 55.1 Good length delivery angling into the batsman from 'round the wicket, it's on off and Head defends it by covering the line.
  • Welcome back for the final session. The Indians spread out onto the field. Who will start? Any guesses? No, it's not Ravichandran Ashwin. He gets a breather after bowling relentlessly from this end in the afternoon. Jasprit Bumrah to run in first up...
  • ... DAY 2, FINAL SESSION ...
  • 33 overs left in the day. Can India bowl Australia out in this session? It just seems a matter of a wicket against this brittle line-up before an implosion occurs. Join us back at 3.30 pm local (0500 GMT).
  • Australia lost Harris and Marsh either side of the break and then they got the big wicket in the form of Usman Khawaja, which has pegged them back. Head and Handscomb have had a few plays and misses but have managed to hang around, somehow taking the partnership to 30.
  • There is nothing much happening in the wicket but the Indian bowlers, combined with excellent discipline and some assistance from the Aussie batsmen in terms of lack of footwork and patience, have made it look like a wicket is always around the corner. Full marks to Ashwin for bowling unchanged but great improvement from the seamers after an ordinary opening session.
  • Another grinding session. 60 runs scored and 2 wickets lost in 28 overs. India have been relentless while the Aussies have been not that patient.
  • 54.6 Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. TEA ON DAY 2, AUSTRALIA TRAIL BY 133! 117/4
  • 54.5 The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball - but fails.
  • 54.4 Full and outside off, pushed through the covers for three.
  • 54.3 NOT OUT. There is a noise but that is not of wood. On a length down the leg side, Head looked to flick but missed. Pant collected and appealed but nothing much. Virat Kohli came charging in from second slip and was very confident, even asking his keeper, 'LOON KYA? LOON KYA?' Shami then told his skipper that the ball was far from the pad. He goes for the review and Hot Spot indicates a spot on the trousers. Waste of a review.
  • Ho ho! Has Kohli heard something here? He has confidently taken a review for a caught behind. None of the others seemed much interested. There was a noise...
  • 54.2 Outside off, pushed through point for a single.
  • 54.1 Around off, watchfully defended.
  • 53.6 Full and around off, well blocked out. 113/4

  • 53.1 Full and around off, watchfully defended.
  • 52.6 A short ball, down the leg side, Head looks to pull but misses. The ball goes off his body towards fine leg. A leg bye taken. 113/4
  • 52.5 Outside off, dabbed behind point for a single.
  • 52.4 The batsman defends it from within the crease.
  • 52.3 Outside off, punched towards cover.
  • 52.2 NEARLY A WICKET NOW! Too loose from Peter. Short in length, yes. But not that wide outside off. PH flashes hard and gets a bottom edge which lands short of first slip.
  • 52.1 FOUR! MURDERED! Stop the press! Australia have scored a boundary! A loosener from Shami, short and outside off, Handscomb likes that as it is a pressure reliever. Rocks back in a flash and pummels a pull through mid-wicket. The deficit is now 139. That is Handscomb's 5th boundary, taking him to 31.
  • Mohammed Shami is back on. 7-4-17-0 so far.
  • 51.6 Full and around off, watchfully pushed back to the bowler. 107/4

  • 51.3 Once more Handscomb is down the track, pushing the ball towards the bowler.

  • 50.1 Full and outside off, driven straight to mid off.

  • 49.5 On middle and leg, flicked through square leg for a run.
  • 49.4 Finally gets some worth for all his efforts. Jumps out and works it through square leg for a single.

  • 48.2 Full and around off, watchfully defended.
  • 48.1 On middle and leg, worked through square leg for a single. The deficit is now 149.
  • 47.6 JUST SHORT! Dangerous from Handscomb. He jumps out, looking to drive, is not quite to the pitch of the ball and is not quite able to control his shot. Nearly spoons a catch to Cheteshwar Pujara at short extra cover. 100/4
  • 47.5 Fraction straighter, outside off, Peter looks to defend but is defeated by the extra bounce. The ball spins in, past the inside edge, hits the pad and lobs to short leg with yells of a catch and an appeal.
  • 47.4 Comes out now and blocks it safely.
  • 47.3 Full and outside off, Handscomb lunges to defend but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. A massive appeal ensues, only to be turned down.
  • 47.2 Jumps out, gets to the pitch of the ball and pushes it towards cover.

  • Drinks break. Two wickets in the first hour post Lunch and India are beginning to gain the upper hand on this Test match. Both the experienced batsmen, Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja, have been dismissed and the inexperienced lot is exposed. They still trail by 162 runs and would have to bat really well to get anywhere near the Indian total. Ravichandran Ashwin has been among the wickets but the tourists will hope for their pacers to succeed as well.
  • 41.6 Rocks back to a shortish delivery and slaps it to sweeper cover for one. Head is off the mark. 88/4

  • 40.1 Full and around off, watchfully defended.
  • India going for the kill. Jasprit Bumrah has been brought back on. 9-4-24-0 so far. The visitors would do well to learn from past mistakes where they have allowed the tail to wag.
  • 39.6 Much better. It's outside off and left alone by Head. 87/4
  • 39.5 Caught in a tangle. A late decision to leave this delivery. It's around off and spinning away, Travis should have been forward but stays back and makes a leave. The ball wasn't too far away from the outside edge.
  • 39.4 Tossed up ball on middle and off, Head draws forward in defense.
  • Travis Head arrives in the middle.
  • 39.3 OUT! Khawaja has gloved it! Huge breakthrough for India as they get rid of the set batsman. Ashwin hunts down his third victim. Once again gets a good drift on his delivery and hurls it around off. Khawaja commits himself on the front foot as he leans forward to defend. But the ball spins away a bit to beat the outside edge of his bat. Although there is some sound as it goes past him and Pant after takes a fine catch lets out an appeal. Umpire Dharmasena shakes his head and Virat Kohli takes the DRS. The replays roll in and first it shows that Ashwin has not overstepped. Now, Hot Spot is employed which detects a tiny spot on Khawaja's gloves. That's enough for the third umpire to overrule the onfield decision. Usman has to walk back after playing a 125-ball knock. Deficit for Australia is 13 more than 150. In trouble. The devil's number strikes for the hosts.

  • 37.1 Flatter and shorter on off, defended off the back foot.
  • 36.6 FOUR! Nicely played! An overpitched delivery on the pads, Peter leans across and clips it with beautiful timing through square leg for a boundary. First convincing boundary from his bat. Right from the middle. 85/3
  • 36.5 Solidly defended. Gets behind the line of the delivery this time and dead-bats it.
  • 36.4 Beaten all ends up! Peter is extremely lucky not to edge it. Shami slants in a length ball around off, Handscomb sticks back to defend it with a straight bat but it nips away a bit to beat the outside edge. There was a lot of movement after it went past the bat.
  • 36.3 Full and around off, angling in, Handscomb defends it off his front foot.
  • 36.2 FOUR! No half measures there. Width on offer outside off, a touch on the shorter side, Handscomb camps back and slashes hard at it. It speeds off the bottom half of his bat and goes through the gap at backward point.
  • 36.1 TOP EDGE! FOUR! Risky but it's rewarded. Shami digs in a short delivery around off and Handscomb takes on the challenge to pull it across the line. There is some extra bounce which catches the top half of his willow and flies over the keeper for a boundary.

  • 27.6 OUT! Drags it on! Not for the first time in this Test match that a batsman has got out while attempting to drive away from his body. Excellent start to the session for India. They have managed to dismiss a big batsman from the opposition camp. A pretty much nothing delivery by Ashwin. He just puts it out on a driving length outside off and plays on the patience of the batsman. Marsh's front foot just goes straight through as he tries to drill it through covers. • ... Day 2, Session 2 ...
  • To be honest, the Indian bowlers were not at their best. Their lines were inaccurate and they wasted the new ball when it was moving. By far, Ishant Sharma was the best out of the lot while Ravichandran Ashwin was decent in his 8-over spell. He although didn't get the same kind of purchase from the surface that Nathan Lyon obtained on Day 1. The visitors will be hopeful of their pacers getting into the act post Lunch whereas Australia will be wishing for a big partnership between the most experienced batsmen in their batting line-up. Who will succeed? Do join us in a short while to find out.
  • A mixed session for both teams! Australia just took one ball to wrap up the Indian innings early in the morning. In reply, they suffered an early setback when Finch got his furniture shattered by Ishant in the first over but after that, the pair of Usman Khawaja and Marcus Harris steadied things with a 45-run stand. The debutant showed good skill and temperament in his little knock before getting caught at silly point off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

The tall Indian bowler serves it on a length and once again gets it to shape back in a bit. Finch tries to drive it through the line, his footwork ain't good enough and it catches some inside edge of his willow before going to clatter the stumps. Australia Vs India Live Score (TEST) Ball by Ball Commentary

  • Australia's bowling for some reason was flat. They failed to bowl with the same intensity as they did on the first morning. Nathan Lyon, as mentioned before, was the best bowler on show while Mitchell Starc also bagged a 3-fer in spite of being very ordinary. A tall task is now in front of the home team, let's see how they respond with the bat. Just for the record, they have not chased a 200-plus target in Adelaide in the last 100 years. Stay tuned for the last innings...
  • A much-better batting performance by the touring team in their second essay. Their openers set the tone and then the middle order capitalized. Pujara's partnerships with Kohli and Rahane put India in a commanding position. Now, they have a firm control on this game and with the pitch assisting spin and bounce, all the hopes will be pinned on the responsible shoulders of Ravichandran Ashwin.
  • Wow! That was quick. Last four wickets for four runs. The Australian team didn't waste much time in picking the remaining wickets post Lunch. Rishabh Pant adopted an aggressive approach and hammered 18 runs in the first over of the afternoon session but then Nathan Lyon roared back to claim a 6-wicket haul. The Indian tail failed to wag this time around and Australia have been set a target of 323 runs to win this Test match.
  • 106.5 OUT! Ishant is bounced out! Starc bangs in a lethal short delivery on middle, Sharma stands back and tries to fend at it. He takes his eyes off the ball too and ends up lobbing it in the air off the splice of his bat. A simple catch for Finch at short leg. India are all out for 307!

It goes aerially to deep mid-wicket where Harris takes another skier easily.
  • Mohammed Shami is the new batsman.
  • 103.1 OUT! Soft dismissal for Rahane! Lyon is all smiles, this is his 13th fifer in Tests. The Australian bowling was flat, to say the least, however, Nathan Lyon bowled his heart out and eventually snapped a couple of wickets. The Indian lead is now 25 short of 300 and they will be eager to bat at least one more session to maximize it. • 63.6 Pitches it up and around off, Rahane draws forward and pushes it to mid off to end the over. 161/3
  • 63.5 Good length ball on middle and off, defended off the back foot.
  • 63.4 Bangs in a short delivery around middle and leg, Rahane is early into the pull shot due to the slowness of the track and lobs it up on the leg side. Luckily it falls safely away from the two close-in fielders.
  • 63.3 This one is in the line of the stumps. On a fuller length and Rahane covers the line and defends it towards mid on.

  • It's time to get going. The players are making their way out in the centre. Australia are wearing black armbands in memory of Colin Guest, who passed away yesterday. Out come the Indian overnight pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. The ball is with Mitchell Starc as he loosens up to bowl the first over of the day. Here we go...
  • Pitch report - The pitch will hold up well with a good covering of grass, feels Mark Waugh. He adds that it's going to be tough to judge the spin and bounce from the footmarks which are mainly outside the right-handers' off stump. Mark further says that there is not much rough outside left-handers' off stump, so Ashwin will have to try and mix up his line and length.
  • The sun shone on India on a damp Day 3 as they managed to drive home the advantage. After gaining a 15-run advantage, their batsmen applied themselves better than the first innings to put the touring team in a commanding position. Given the nature of the pitch, Australia would be feeling the heat already but their first aim this morning will be to limit the damage. An important session in the context of this Test match is minutes away from unfolding itself. Hello and welcome everyone. Stay tuned for more updates.
  • ... Day 4, Session 1 ...
  • The lead now has swelled to 166 and India still have a lot of batting to come. Another decent stand and handy contributions from the rest will probably see them bat Australia out of the game. The hosts, on the other hand, need a few quick wickets as that is the only way they can get back into the contest. The morning of Day 4 will probably give us a fair idea of who has a better chance to take a 1-0 lead. Do join us for the coverage, not to forget, we have a 30-minute early start. So join us at 1000 local (2330 GMT) for all the action. Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Earlier in the day, after quite a few delays, we saw the game evenly poised as Australia managed to reduce the deficit to 15 runs. However, their bowlers failed to recreate the same magic as they did in the first innings. The Indian openers stepped up when it was needed and provided a good start. The tourists then lost two wickets in a quick succession but Kohli and Pujara added another handy stand to put India on the front foot.
  • Another session which belongs to the Indians and one can say they are in the driver's seat at the moment. This session began with Kohli and Pujara grinding it out. They, just like the openers, took their time and played themselves in. The pair stitched an excellent 71-run stand off 197 balls. However, just when they looked like taking the game away from the hosts, Lyon struck and provided some relief to Australia. The hosts would have liked another wicket or two before Stumps but Rahane and Pujara ensured there were no more hiccups.
  • 60.6 Last ball of the day and Pujara keeps it out. Fuller length this time and Che pushes it towards the point fielder. Stumps on Day 3. 151/3

  • Ajinkya Rahane is the new man in.
  • 57.1 OUT! Lyon at last gets the breakthrough. Finally, a ball takes an inside edge and goes to hand. The celebration tells you how relieved they are. Another Indian batsman can't make most of the start. This is tossed up outside off, it turns back in sharply as Kohli stretches forward in defense. But it takes the inside edge, hits the pad and lobs to short leg. Finch there grabs an easy catch. The stand which was taking the game away from the Aussies has been broken. This is the 6th time Lyon has got Kohli out in Tests, no bowler has dismissed him more. Can Australia take a couple more and end the day on a high?

  • 55.3 Floats it up on off, the batter keeps it out.
  • 55.2 Australia are now appealing for everything here! Pujara uses his feet and tries to defend but misses to get hit on the pads. The players around the batsman start appealing. Lyon, on the other hand, dives full stretch to catch the ball and then appeals for a caught and bowled. The umpire is no interested in both the appeals though. Desperate times bring desperate measures.
