There was a bit of drama on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston when India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal decided to go for a DRS review after being given out LBW. The controversy erupted after England skipper Ben Stokes protested against Jaiswal’s late review being allowed by the on-field umpire. Jaiswal had reviewed after the timer had seemingly run out.
The incident happened in the eighth over of India’s second innings on Friday. England bowler Josh Tongue got one to angle in and hit Jaiswal on the pad as the batter tried to go for a big drive. The on-field umpire Sharfuddoula raised his finger straight away. Jaiswal went to his opening partner KL Rahul to discuss whether he should challenge the decision and called for a review.
However, the DRS timer on the big screen had already hit zero before Jaiswal signalled for the review. Despite this, the umpire allowed the review and went upstairs. England captain Ben Stokes immediately walked towards the umpire to debate the decision. The discussion between Stokes and the officials went on for a while, and KL Rahul also stepped in to cool things down.

Despite the delay, the umpires allowed the review to go ahead. But it didn’t help India. The ball-tracking showed the delivery hitting the top of leg stump. Jaiswal had to walk back for 28 off 22 balls after all three reds confirmed the on-field decision.
Earlier in the day, Mohammed Siraj picked up a six-wicket haul to help India bowl England out for 407 runs. This after Harry Brook and Jamie Smith put on a 303-run stand for the sixth wicket to help the home side avoid the follow-on. India then ended Day 3 at a score of 64/1 and with a lead of 244 runs. KL Rahul and Karun Nair will resume India’s innings on Day 4.
