Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup participation LIVE Updates: The moment of reckoning is here! Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will have to make the final call today (21 January) about its participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The 21 January deadline was set by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for Bangladesh following the BCB’s multiple requests to relocate its T20 World Cup 2026 matches outside of India to Sri Lanka.
According to reports, if Bangladesh do not agree to play their T20 World Cup matches in India, then the ICC could name a replacement team. Scotland is the next highest-ranked side not to qualify for the T20 World Cup and they could replace Bangladesh if the Jay Shah-led ICC takes the big step.
Will ICC remove Bangladesh from T20 World Cup?
Bangladesh want to replace Ireland in Group B and play all their group matches in Sri Lanka, and if there’s a last-minute agreement, the ICC may also decide to make this change.
The whole drama began with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removing Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bangladesh did not like the call and used it to build an argument that their players would not be safe playing T20 World Cup matches in India. Bangladesh’s Group C matches are scheduled to take place in Kolkata and Mumbai.
But ICC has refused to entertain their requests. An independent risk assessment that was made on ICC’s request shows that the “overall security risk for the tournament in India” is “low to moderate,” and the global body has used this report as a basis for denying Bangladesh’s request.
But Bangladesh have constantly refused to change its stance. Asif Nazrul, the sports advisor to the interim Muhammad Yunus-led government in Bangladesh, on Tuesday said that ICC is putting “illogical” pressure on BCB , which is not acceptable to the board.
“I am not aware that Scotland will be included in our place (in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup). If the ICC bows to pressure from the Indian Cricket Board and tries to impose pressure on us by setting unreasonable conditions, we will not accept those conditions,” Asif said.
“In the past there are examples that Pakistan said that they will not travel to India and ICC changed the venue. We have asked to change the venue on logical ground and we cannot be pressurised to play in India by putting illogical pressure,” he added.
Cricket fans would hope that better sense prevails at the end of the day and a compromise is made. Bangladesh’s venues for matches in India could be changed to cities in South India, or they may get what they want and matches are moved to Sri Lanka. In the worst case, Scotland may replace Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup. With Wednesday (21 January) being the deadline for the final decision, the fiasco is set to end today.
