The ongoing four-day match between the emerging teams of Bangladesh and South Africa in Mirpur witnessed ugly scenes on the second day with tensions between Tshepo Ntuli and Ripon Mondol getting out of hand and leading to a scuffle on the ground.

The incident took place after Mondol struck Ntuli for a six down the ground. The tailender exchanged glances with with the off-spinner while walking towards his batting partner Mehedi Hasan. Ntuli did not take kindly to the glare and charged towards him, pulling Mondol’s helmet after the two exchanged shoves.

And while umpire Kamruzzaman intervened and was eventually successful in separating the two, none of the South Africans stopped Ntuli, with a couple of them appearing to charge towards the batter.

“This is extreme, this is unacceptable. Normally we see verbal altercations in a cricket field but we don’t often see a scuffle. Ntuli struck Ripon’s helmet at one point,” commentator Nabil Kaiser was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as describing the incident while calling the game.

I have never seen such an incident in the history of cricket. A direct fight. What a shameful incident of cricket happened between the talented bowler Shepo Ntuli of South Africa and Ripon Mondal of Bangladesh. Match officials yet to take immediate action against Ntuli and Mondol

The aggression did not stop there though as shortly after the incident, Ntuli aggressively threw the ball towards Mondol after the latter blocked a delivery and sent the ball rolling in his direction. Ntuli would go on to dismiss Mondol for 43, breaking his 67-run stand for the ninth-wicket Mehedi (44 not out) that got the home team past the 350-mark. The Bangladeshis were eventually bowled out for 371 and had restricted the Proteas to 152/6 at the end of the day’s play.

The match officials, however, are yet to take any immediate action as the on-field umpires are required to submit an official report first. The report on ESPNCricinfo states that the match referee will submit reports to the Bangladesh Cricket Board as well as Cricket South Africa for further action.

The incident, however, isn’t the first in the South African Emerging Players’ ongoing tour of Bangladesh. Andile Simelane and Jishan Alam had missed the third and final match in the one-day leg of the tour in Rajshahi after getting suspended following incidents in the second game.
