B Sai Sudharsan did not walk out along with the rest of the Indian team at the start of play on Day 3 of the second Test against West Indies in Delhi. And as per an update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the top-order batter will not be taking the field for the entirety of the ‘Moving Day’ as a precautionary measure.

Sai Sudharsan, after all, had suffered an injury after inadvertently completing a catch at short leg to dismiss West Indian opener John Campbell off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling. Campbell went for a slog-sweep off Jadeja’s bowling, hoping to collect his third boundary.

Instead, the ball ended up getting sandwiched between Sai Sudharsan’s helmet grille and his hands and chest. The 23-year-old was attempting to duck the ball that was powerfully struck by the left-handed batter, but wasn’t quick enough to move completely out of the way.

And while that helped India break the opening partnership, Sai Sudharsan suffered an ‘impact injury’ which has ruled him out of action on Day 3.

“Sai Sudharsan had an impact injury on Day 2 while attempting a catch. He hasn’t taken the field today as a precautionary measure. The injury isn’t serious and he is doing fine,” read a statement from the BCCI.

Windies crumble against Indian spinners on Day 3

India had earlier posted a mammoth 518/5 on the board, propelled by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and skipper Shubman Gill (129 not out), with Sai Sudharsan narrowly missing out on his maiden international century after getting dismissed for 87 – which is now his highest score for India.

West Indies, in reply, put up a much better performance with the bat after getting bundled out for 162 and 146 in Ahmedabad, ending Day 2 on 140/4 with Alick Athanaze and opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul chipping in with knocks of 41 and 34 respectively.

The visitors, however, faced the prospect of having to follow-on on Day 3 after getting reduced to 217/8 at lunch, with Kuldeep Yadav (4/72) and Jadeja (3/46) sharing seven of the eight wickets that have fallen so far.
