Delhi Capitals (DC) have officially named Axar Patel as their captain for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The experienced all-rounder, who has been an integral part of the franchise since 2019, takes over the leadership role following Rishabh Pant’s exit from the team ahead of the mega auction. Axar was Delhi’s top retention for IPL 2025 as he was retained by the franchise for Rs. 16.50 crore.
Axar’s first statement after being named captain
“It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me. I’ve grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward. Our coaches and scouts have done a superb job at the mega auction by putting together a balanced and robust squad which has tremendous potential. We have plenty of leaders in the group which is also very helpful for me, and I can’t wait to join the team as we look forward to a very successful season for the Capitals, backed by the immense love and support of our fans,” Axar Patel said.
Axar has been a key leadership figure for Delhi Capitals in recent years. He was named India’s T20I vice-captain in January 2024. Additionally, he has led his state team, Gujarat, in 23 matches across formats, including the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also had a brief stint as DC’s stand-in captain during IPL 2024, leading the side in a crucial match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) when Rishabh Pant was banned for a slow over-rate.
Axar has 150 IPL matches under his belt, where he has amassed 1,653 runs and claimed 123 wickets, including a sensational hat-trick in 2016 when he took four wickets in five balls for the Punjab Kings. Since joining Delhi Capitals in 2019, the 31-year-old has established himself as a dependable all-rounder.
As captain, he will work closely with the Capitals’ support staff, which includes mentor Kevin Pietersen, head coach Hemang Badani, assistant coach Matthew Mott, and bowling coach Munaf Patel. He will also have the help of senior players like KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis, who have captaincy experience.
