The Australian A side has been hit by a suspected case of food poisoning after having a chicken dish at a Kanpur hotel, it has been reported. The Australia A side is currently in Kanpur for an unofficial ODI series against India A. As per reports, Australia A fast bowler Henry Thornton developed a severe stomach infection and had to be hospitalised at the city’s Regency Hospital.

Thornton was treated at the Regency Hospital by senior doctors for two days before being discharged. The Australia A manager stated that Thornton was dealing with mild gastro problems even before reaching Kanpur, but it became worse during the ODI series, according to the Hindustan Times.

Thornton wasn’t the only Australian player to develop gastro problems. Three other players suffered similar issues; however, they were not required to be hospitalised. According to Dainik Jagran reported Abhishek Tripathi, Thornton fell ill after eating a chicken dish at the hotel in Kanpur.

The touring party has now revised their dietary instructions with a bigger focus on lesser spicy meals and hydration.

As a result of the stomach illness, Thornton has not played in the two unofficial ODIs so far. He was part of the second and final unofficial Test, which India won by five wickets. The first Test ended in a draw.

India A also won the first unofficial ODI by 171 runs, while the Aussies clinched the second game of the three-match series by nine wickets (DLS method).

The final ODI will be played on Sunday.

The India A ODI squad includes top players like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shreyas Iyer, Riyan Parag, Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh. Tilak, who played a match-winning knock in the recently-concluded Asia Cup final, slammed 94 in the second unofficial ODI on Friday, while captain Iyer also scored 58.

However, India A’s bowlers had an off day as Australia A successfully chased down the revised target of 160 in 25 overs in a rain-impacted match.
