The suspense continues over Team India’s participation in the Asia Cup 2025 as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has reportedly asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to confirm the schedule for the tournament amid rising pressure from the broadcasters and the need to streamline the logistical requirements.

The Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the T20 format if it goes ahead, is expected to take place in September. Reports in Pakistani media have stated that the tournament could be played from 12 to 28 September in the UAE.

The ACC is currently headed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. This has raised doubts over India’s participation following the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack. Nonetheless, the Tribune in Pakistan has also claimed that the BCCI is ready to take part in the Asia Cup 2025 .

Asia Cup: ACC asks for clarity from BCCI

Amid the uncertainty, India Today has claimed that the ACC is concerned over potential revenue losses by the broadcasters and has asked BCCI to confirm the schedule.

“We have been informed that, in the absence of this information, their ability to plan effectively, allocate resources, and execute their campaigns is significantly constrained," ACC told BCCI in an email, as per India Today.

“In addition to highlighting the challenges being faced, the media rights partner has also referred to obligations under the Agreement that begin 60 to 90 days prior to the start of the 2025 tournament.

“Our sponsorship rights partner, TCM, has outlined significant commercial concerns, particularly regarding the timelines required for effective monetization and activation planning.

“Additionally, with several major ICC and international events scheduled around the same period, both Sony and TCM have expressed apprehension that any further delays could lead to missed commercial opportunities - losses that may be irrecoverable due to scheduling constraints and limited lead time.

“In light of this, and considering that fixtures for other major tournaments have already been confirmed, we are keen to address the concerns of our rights holders by finalising the Asia Cup schedule within this week. This matter holds particular importance for the ACC, as the Men’s Asia Cup serves as its primary source of revenue.

“We believe any further delays could potentially expose us to claims of breach of agreement from our partners, who may seek compensation or request discounts as a result.”

Asia Cup broadcasters face potential financial disaster

The media rights for the Asia Cup are held by Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), which acquired a deal from 2024 to 2031 for USD 170 million.

If India pulls out of the tournament, the Asia Cup 2025 would most likely be cancelled as India vs Pakistan matches are the biggest money-spinners and a lack of matches between the two sides would result in a heavy financial loss for the broadcasters.
