Jaiswal, Gill, Sudharsan likely to feature in Asia Cup 2025; Bumrah's return not confirmed: Report
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have not been part of the T20I team for a long time. Reuters

India’s 2025 Asia Cup T20 squad will reportedly be selected in the third week of August, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill , and Sai Sudharsan are likely to be part of it. The three top-order batters were part of the recently concluded five-match Test series against England that ended in a 2-2 draw.

According to PTI, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to call Jaiswal and Gill back in the T20I squad as they don’t have any cricket for the next month and will get ample rest for the event.

Jaiswal and Gill were not part of the recent T20I matches for India because of enough options with the selectors.

Sudharsan, on the other hand, has played just one T20I, which came against Zimbabwe in 2024. However, it has now emerged that the BCCI is considering adding these players to the Asia Cup squad despite having options like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, etc.

“There is a five week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days in Asia Cup, if one plays till final, there are 6 T20 games and that’s not much of a workload. But obviously with 17 member squads allowed for the Asia Cup, selectors will weigh options carefully,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 559 runs with a strike-rate of 160 in IPL 2025, while Test captain Shubman Gill made 650 runs at a strike-rate over 155. Sudharsan won the Orange Cap this year with 759 runs at a strike-rate of 156. The report suggests that the selectors are likely to form the top-order around these players, with the T20 World Cup also due next year.

Will Bumrah and Siraj play?

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who have had heavy workloads across formats, will undergo fitness tests before the selection meeting. The selectors will monitor their condition before making a final call. Both these bowlers were part of the India vs England Test series. While Bumrah played just three matches, Siraj was India’s workhorse across all five Tests.

The Asia Cup will be an important preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is slated to be held in India, who are defending champions. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to lead the side in both competitions. He recently underwent a sports hernia surgery and is currently recovering at BCCI’s Centre for Excellence in Bengaluru.
