More clarity on the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 could emerge after the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 in Singapore, which will take place from 17 to 20 July, as the Asian giants, including India and Pakistan, could hold talks on the sidelines of the event.
The Asia Cup 2025, which will take place in the T20 format as a preparatory tournament for the T20 World Cup 2026, is pencilled in to take place in September with India being the hosts. However, the future of the 2025 Asia Cup has been up in the air since April’s Pahalgam terror attack in India, resulting in 26 deaths, and the retaliatory attacks by India through Operation Sindoor, as they destroyed multiple terror camps in Pakistan.
Asia Cup 2025 future remains in limbo
Since then, there have been reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unwilling to take part in a tournament that is hosted by a body headed by a Pakistani. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is headed by the current Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi. However, that claims have been since refuted by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
“Since this morning, it has come to our notice about some news items about BCCI’s decision not to participate in the Asia Cup and Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both ACC’s events,” Saikia said.
India’s participation in matches against Pakistan has been regulated by the Indian government in recent years, with the two neighbouring nations only competing against each other in ICC tournaments in cricket. The last bilateral series between the two countries was played in 2012-13.
All of these point towards India boycotting the Asia Cup 2025. But considering the money riding on the tournament, it’s quite possible that India and Pakistan get ready for the tournament eventually.
Asia Cup media rights were acquired by Sony Pictures Networks India from 2024 to 2031 at a base price of $170 million. In case India do not take part in the tournament, ACC and Sony Sports are set to face massive losses.

Efforts to get India to agree to take part in the Asia Cup 2025 could now take place at the ICC AGM, as per Forbes. The Asia Cup falls under the purview of ACC, but the ICC AGM will be used to hold discussions between BCCI and PCB on the sidelines regarding the continental tournament.
The report also added that the Asia Cup 2025 will take place in the United Arab Emirates if it’ not cancelled. However, if India pull out of the tournament, there’s a good chance the tournament will be cancelled.
