Star India all-rounder Amanjot Kaur, who hails from Chandigarh, competed in the victorious ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign unaware that one of her biggest supporters, her grandmother, had suffered a heart attack last month. With the 25-year-old being pivotal to India’s chances at the mega event, Amanjot’s family decided to keep the unfortunate news under wraps as the seam-bowling all-rounder played seven out of nine matches for the Women In Blue in the World Cup.

India won their first-ever Women’s World Cup on Sunday after beating South Africa by 52 runs. And while Amanjot had a subdued outing, scoring just 12 and failing to pick up a wicket in her 4 overs, it was her juggling catch of centurion Laura Wolvaardt that changed the final on its head.

South Africa weren’t able to recover from skipper Wolvaardt’s dismissal on 220 in 41.1. overs as they were bowled out on 246 inside 46 overs.

Behind Amanjot’s World Cup heroics, her grandmother’s silent suffering

After India’s memorable win, Amanjot’s father, Bhupinder Singh, revealed that the family had kept her grandmother’s heart attack a secret from the cricketer to allow her to focus on the World Cup.

“My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjot’s pillar of strength since the day she started playing cricket outside on the street and the park at our Phase 5 residence in Mohali. While I would be at my carpentry shop at Balongi, she would make sure to sit outside the home or at the park to oversee Amanjot playing with the boys as well as other girls," Amanjot’s father Bhupinder told the Indian Express.

“After she suffered a heart attack last month, we did not tell Amanjot about it, and the last few days have seen us spending time in hospitals for her treatment. The World Cup win has surely come as a balm in these tense times for us,” he added.

Reflecting on her nervous catch in which the ball almost slipped out of her hands in the death overs, Amanjot was speechless while speaking to Star Sports, but her happiness after creating history was pretty evident.

“We all knew how important the catch was. First time ever in my life, glad that I got that second chance to take that catch. I don’t have the words to express it. This means a lot; you can see the crowd cheering all around. We have created history. This is just the start, Indian cricket is going to be at the next level,” said Amanjot.

“We are going to dominate all over the world in every format. Congrats to everyone around here, my family, my coaches. Everyone has a family here. Everyone is sitting at home and watching because my grandma is not well,” she added.

Overall in the tournament, Amanjot scored 146 runs and took six wickets.
