Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers could not stop raving about 22-year-old Dewald Brevis after the youngster smashed a sensational 41-ball century against Australia in the 2nd T20I of the three-match series. Brevis electrified the TIO Stadium with a blistering 125 off just 56 balls, thumping the Aussie attack for 12 fours and eight sixes. Brevis’ innings powered the Proteas to put on a solid 218/7 in 20 overs.
Having witnessed the knock, De Villiers joined the social media bandwagon to heap praise on Brevis and, at the same time, highlighted the mistake IPL franchises made by not signing the South African during the 2025 mega auction. The former RCB player also mentioned that luck showered on CSK as they acquired the services of Brevis midway through IPL 2025 as an injury replacement.
“There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play," De Villiers wrote on X.
Dewald Brevis made the immediate impact for CSK
Brevis went unsold in the auction but was later signed by CSK as an injury replacement of Gurjapneet Singh. As the team longed for victories in the season, Brevis was eventually given the chance to perform for the outfit, and he did not disappoint MS Dhoni and the company. Notably, Dhoni put on the captaincy shoes in IPL 2025 after first-choice captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an injury.
Brevis played 6 matches in IPL 2025, scoring 225 runs with a strike rate of 180. His highest score in IPL 2025 was 57, which he achieved in a match against Gujarat Titans.
He took the IPL momentum forward and has made a striking impact for the national team. The innings of 125 against the mighty Aussies has made him the youngest player to score a century in T20Is for South Africa.
