Observers noted that the operation showcased US military capabilities in a manner that would likely resonate beyond the Western hemisphere.

The image was taken aboard the USS Iwo Jima, where Maduro was being held as he was transported to the United States to face criminal charges.

Almost immediately, the image spread across social media platforms, generating reactions with many users remarking that the outfit conveyed an almost domestic or leisurely feel, clashing sharply with the seriousness of the arrest.

Within hours of Trump’s post, memes flooded platforms such as X, TikTok, and Instagram. Some users joked that the tracksuit could serve as a ready-made Halloween costume.

Others claimed — without confirmation — that demand for the outfit had surged to the point of sell-outs. In reality, Nike’s website continued to list the Tech Fleece jacket at $140 and the matching pants at $120, with several sizes still available, though some have reported that it has sold out.

Despite the online frenzy, Nike did not issue an immediate public response. One X user remarked, “they’re calling it ‘Maduro grey’.”

Artificial intelligence-generated images soon added another layer to the phenomenon. These visuals portrayed Maduro wearing Nike apparel while dancing, singing, or playing video games.

Another X user contextualised the outfit within a broader pop-cultural framework, writing, “I still cant believe they caught Maduro wearing the heather grey Nike tech fleece set though. I guess the tech fleece is the unofficial ‘drug lord tracksuit’ now like the Adidas tracksuit used to be back in the day.”

The quarter-zip movement and online fashion policing

Maduro’s viral Nike outfit collided directly with an existing online debate about menswear, reported USA Today.

In November 2025, TikTok creator Jason Gymafi posted a video arguing that young men should abandon Nike Tech Fleeces in favour of quarter-zip sweaters, framing the change as a marker of personal growth and respectability.

The video, featuring Gymafi and his friend Richard Minor sipping matcha drinks while wearing quarter-zips, resonated widely. By December 15, 2025, it had amassed nearly 30 million views. In the clip, Gymafi declared, “We don’t do Nike tech. We don’t do coffee. It’s straight quarter zips and matchas around here.”

He continued, “He [Minor] was talking about putting on a Nike tech to come outside. I told him, ‘What are you doing? You’ve upgraded in life. You wear glasses now. You wear quarter zips now.’"

The video sparked a trend that extended beyond TikTok. Men began organising meet-ups where quarter-zips were worn deliberately as a rejection of Nike Tech culture.

The movement framed athleisure as outdated and positioned the quarter-zip as a symbol of maturity and self-awareness.

When images of Maduro’s arrest surfaced, the internet quickly mapped this trend onto the event. Comment sections filled with remarks such as “Why does bro got on Nike tech” and “Bro didn’t get the update of quarter zips.”

TikTok creator @brooklyngabby reportedly directly connected the trend to Maduro’s situation in a widely shared video, stating, “If he was wearing a quarter-zip, he would still be fine. He’d still be doing his thing. But he wasn’t. He was caught slacking, he was in his Nike Tech, he was not in his quarter-zip sweater.”

According to Google Trends, searches for the term “Nike Tech” spiked sharply on the morning of Saturday, January 3, 2026, shortly after Trump’s Truth Social post went live.

Maduro’s long-standing preference for casual attire

During his years in power, Maduro frequently appeared in tracksuits, jeans, or simple shirts, cultivating an image aligned with his self-presentation as a leader connected to ordinary citizens.

Whether touring neighbourhoods in Caracas, addressing rallies, or participating in official engagements, Maduro often avoided traditional markers of elite or authoritarian dress.

Although he has been accused of possessing significant hidden wealth and has occasionally been seen wearing luxury watches, his public clothing choices typically emphasised approachability.
