On Saturday, gunshots were fired outside the home of Gippy Grewal in Canada. The gang of Lawrence Bishnoi, an accused in the murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and a close associate of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, took to Facebook in the aftermath of the attack to claim responsibility. The gang wrote, “You consider Salman Khan a brother, but now it’s time for your ‘brother’ to come and save you. This message is also for Salman Khan – don’t be in the illusion that Dawood will save you; no one can save you. Your dramatic response to Sidhu Moose Wala’s death did not go unnoticed. We all know the kind of person he was and the criminal associations he had. You hovered around Vicky when he was in Middukheda, and later, you mourned even more for Sidhu. You’ve now landed on our radar. Consider this a trailer; the full film will be released soon. Flee to any country you wish, but remember, death doesn’t require a visa; it comes uninvited.” But who is Grewal? What is his link to Salman? And why was his home in Vancouver attacked? Let’s take a closer look: Who is Grewal? Grewal is an actor and Punjabi singer. He was born Rupinder Singh Grewal on 2 January, 1983, as per Book My Show. Grewal’s website says he has a degree in hotel management. As per Hindustan Times, he released his first studio album entitled Chakk Ley in 2002.
The album was a smash hit.
He followed this with a slew of successful albums including Nasha, Phulkari, Phulkari 2, Just Hits and Gangster. Grewal made his acting debut in 2010 with the movie Mel Karade Rabba. He has since appeared in many hit movies. Grewal, speaking about his early struggles in Canada prior to hitting it big, told Mashable India, “I used to do three jobs at one point. I did not use to earn a lot, and there are so many singers in Punjab that companies stopped investing and albums became expensive. And every artist would say that they’re very talented, where will the music company invest? So that had become a huge problem. There was no concept of taking money from home, so I thought I have to earn it myself only.” “So I started doing three jobs. I would drop off newspapers in the morning, then I would work for 8 to 9 hours at this factory where we would create bricks of marble-like material. We used to work with cement and it was a hard job. Then at night, I and my wife would do cleaning jobs– mopping and clearing plates at food courts at Crystal mall in Vancouver. While I did my day job, my wife also made sandwiches at Subway. The other two jobs we both shared. She would drive while I would go and drop off newspapers in these boxes outside homes in the morning. But I used to enjoy doing all these jobs.” He is married to Ravneet Kaur. They have two children – Ekomkar Singh Grewal and Gurfateh Singh Grewal. Why was his home attacked? Bishnoi has said the shots were fired outside Gippy’s home because of his proximity to Salman. Bishnoi had previously threatened Salman over the killing of a blackbuck. The Bishnoi community reveres the blackbuck as a reincarnation of their holy Guru Bhagwan Jambeshwar and considers its killing a sin. “Will break his ego sooner or later. He should come to our deity’s temple and apologise. If our society forgives, then I will not say anything,” Bishnoi told ABP News. Bishnoi has also called killing Salman his ‘life goal’. [caption id=“attachment_13436022” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] Lawrence Bishnoi had previously threatened Salman Khan over the 1998 killing of a blackbuck.[/caption] Brar has also previously stated that Salman is on his lit list. “We will kill him, we will definitely kill him. Bhai saheb (Lawrence) had stated that he wouldn’t apologise. Baba will show mercy only when he feels merciful,” _Bra_r told India Today. “Like we have said earlier, it’s not just about Salman Khan. We will continue our attempts against all our enemies as long as we’re alive. Salman Khan is our target, there’s no doubt about that. We’ll keep trying, and when we succeed, you’ll know.” Salman was convicted by a trial court and sentenced to five years in prison for killing two blackbucks during the shooting of “Hum Saath Saath Hain” in Kankani village near Jodhpur on the night of 1 October, 1998. He was later granted bail in the case. Salman has been given Y plus security by the Mumbai Police and recently added a bulletproof car to his security detail.
But Gippy told News18 he had no friendship with the Bollywood actor.
He said he only met Salman twice – at the trailer launch of a movie and the set of a TV show. “The producer who backed Maujaan Hi Maujaan invited Salman to the trailer launch. I met him there. Before that, I met him on the sets of Bigg Boss. I have no friendship with Salman Khan and the anger of it is being taken out on me. For me, it is still shocking and I am unable to process what has happened to me.” “When this incident happened, I was shocked because I have never faced any controversies before. I have no enmity with anyone so I couldn’t even think who could have been behind the attack.” Rediff quoted Salman, at the launch of the film trailer, saying “a face like this cannot go wrong.” Bishnoi in May was shifted to Delhi’s Central Jail from Gujarat.
