Hannibal Gaddafi, one of the sons of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, has been released on bail.

Hannibal has been held in Lebanon for nearly a decade under pre-trial detention in Lebanon.

Since his father Muammar was deposed in a 2011 revolt, the rest of the family have dispersed all over the world. Here’s a look at where some of its members are today.

Hannibal Gaddafi

Hannibal had been detained since his 2015 arrest in Lebanon. The authorities had claimed that Hannibal was withholding information about the disappearance of Lebanese Shiite cleric Mussa Sadr in 1978.

Seif al-Islam Gaddafi

Seif al-Islam was long viewed as his father’s successor. The second of Gaddafi’s eight children, he was previously said to be Libya’s de facto prime minister. This despite holding no official position in his father’s administration. However, his claim to be a moderate and reformist were put paid by his speech vowing “rivers of blood” during the Arab Spring.

Seif al-Islam was arrested in November 2011 in southern Libya after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant. He was reportedly detained in Zenten in western Libya. Seif al-Islam had been sentenced to death in 2015 after a quick trial but was granted amnesty.

In 2021, he announced he would run for president of Libya. However, those elections were indefinitely postponed. His current whereabouts remain unknown.

Aisha Gaddafi and Safiya Farkach

Aisha, a lawyer, was born in 1977. She left Libya for Algeria in August 2011 alongside her mother Safiya Farkach, Gaddafi’s second wife, and her brother Mohammed.

She later moved to Oman, where she was granted political asylum, in 2013. Safiya currently lives between Egypt and Oman, according to a source close to the family.

Mutassim Gaddafi

Mutassim, born in 1975, was chief of Libya’s National Security Council in 2007. The career soldier and doctor was widely viewed as a rival to Seif al-Islam. Suspected of trying to launch a coup, Mutassim was initially exiled to Egypt. However, he returned home after being pardoned.

Like his father, he was captured and killed in northern Libya’s Sirte in October 2011. His final burial site remains unknown.

Saadi Gaddafi

Saadi, a footballer with a playboy reputation, was born in 1973. Saadi headed up an elite unit of his father’s army. In 2011, he fled to Niger where he was placed under house arrest. Saadi, who vowed to return to Libya and launch a new rebellion, escaped.

However, he was recaptured and extradited to Libya, where he was kept till September 2021 before being shifted to Turkey. He currently lives there.

Khamis Gaddafi

Khamis, born in 1983, commanded a battalion of army loyalists and mercenaries. He played a major role in putting down the 2011 uprising in Benghazi. He also headed the last base to fall amid the uprisings in Tripoli and was announced dead in October 2011.
Mohammed Gaddafi

Mohammed, Muammar’s eldest son and only child from his first wife Fatiha al-Nuri, was chief of the Libyan Olympic Committee. He was also chairman of Libya’s General Post and Telecommunications Company. Mohammed fled to Algeria alongside Aisha and her mother. He then shifted to Oman.
