So, what exactly is this Ironman event all about? Let’s take a closer look.

About Ironman 70.3

The Ironman 70.3 triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organised by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).

Originating in 1978 in Hawaii, the Ironman series has evolved into a premier competition for athletes who push their physical and mental boundaries during the event.

The triathlon was held for the fifth time in India this year where nearly 4,000 women and men from from 50 countries took part in the daunting race to challenge their endurance.

Held at Goa’s Miramar Beach, the event was flagged off by tennis legend Leander Paes, MP Tejasvi Surya, race director and Yoska’s Founder & CEO, Deepak Raj, and Ganeshan VS, Marketing Director of Herbalife India.

The race involves three legs: swimming, cycling, and running, each requiring a high level of stamina and training.

One has to finish 1.9 km of open-water swim, followed by 90 km of cycling and then 21.1 km of running to complete the challenge. The “70.3” refers to the total distance in miles (113 km).

Whereas, the standard Ironman is a more rigorous race that includes a 3.8 km swim, a 180km cycle ride, and a 42.2km marathon run, covering a distance of 226 kilometres in distance.

Participants in the Ironman 70.3 can choose between two categories: the relay category, where two or three athletes team up, or the individual category. In a relay, each member completes one of the race legs—swimming, cycling, or running—and all receive an Ironman medal.

In the individual category, each athlete must complete all three segments of the race independently.

Physical fitness requirements

Ironman events demand exceptional physical fitness, with participants expected to complete the race within strict time limits (usually under 17 hours for the full Ironman).

The participants usually undergo training under professional coaches to build strength and stamina across the three disciplines.

Crediting PM Modis’ Fit India Initiative’ as his motivation, Surya said, “Over the last 4 months, I have trained rigorously to improve my fitness and as a result, am happy to share that I have completed this challenge!” The politician completed the race in 8 hours, 27 minutes and  32 seconds.
