It was a vital week for India. After New Delhi’s years of diplomatic efforts, Tahawwur Hussain Rana – a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks – was extradited to India from the United States. He is currently in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Amid fears of recession due to Donald Trump’s tariffs, a trade war has erupted between the United States and China. Both countries have levied over 100 per cent import taxes on each other. India is closely watching the fight.
In other news, another ‘Pee-gate’ incident was reported on an Air India flight from Delhi to Bangkok. This comes three years after a similar incident stirred controversy.
Here’s all this and more in our weekly wrap from India.
1. Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian national, is finally in India to face justice, nearly 17 years after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks killed 166 people across the city. His extradition to India was possible after he exhausted every legal avenue in the US.
Rana was brought to Delhi on a special flight earlier in the week. The NIA officials produced him before a court where he was formally remanded to 18-day custody of the anti-terror body. The NIA’s ‘Special 12’ including its chief Sadanand Date has begun his interrogation. As per reports, Rana is likely to be questioned about his identity, involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks and his alleged links to Pakistan’s spy agency, the ISI. We take a look in this story at the likely questions Rana could face.
2. A tariff war between the US and China has escalated with both countries refusing to back down. While Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for many countries, the White House raised import taxes on Chinese goods to 145 per cent.
Beijing has responded by increasing tariff rates on US imports entering the Asian country to 125 per cent. China has vowed to ‘fight to the end’ against Trump’s import taxes. The trade war between the US and China does not bode well for India, which could have to bear the fallout. We explain in this report.
3. India is increasing security in the Siliguri Corridor in West Bengal amid growing threats in the region. Bangladesh interim government’s chief advisor Muhammad Yunus’ recent remarks during his last month’s trip to China on India’s Northeast brought the vulnerable ‘Chicken’s Neck’ to focus.
The Siliguri Corridor is a 22 km stretch of land that connects the Northeast to the rest of the country. The narrow strip is strategically crucial for India. But what makes it vulnerable? Read our report to find out.
4. A horrific case surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi where a Class 12 student was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by dozens of men over a span of a week. According to the UP police, as many as 23 men, many of whom were known to the teenager, allegedly raped her between March 29 and April 4.
The girl’s ordeal began after she visited a hookah bar with a friend. She was then drugged and gang-raped multiple times. The incident has once again put the spotlight on increasing crimes against women in India. Read the Varanasi student’s horror here .
5. Another ‘pee-gate’ episode on board an Air India plane has come to light. Tushar Masand, who was on the Tata-owned airline’s AI-2336 flight from Delhi to Bangkok, urinated on a Japanese co-passenger.
The 24-year-old reportedly consumed alcohol before getting up from his seat and peeing on another passenger. Air India has banned Masand from flying for 30 days. This is not a standalone incident. In recent years, several incidents of unruly Indian flyers have been reported. Here’s the latest story .
6. An Indian entrepreneur has revealed her nightmare at a US airport during a security check. Shruti Chaturvedi has claimed she was “physically checked” by a male officer, forced to sit in a cold room and not even allowed to make a phone call or pee after airport security officials found a power bank in her luggage “suspicious”.
Chaturvedi, founder of the Indian Action Project and public relations firm Chaaipani, recalled her experience in a now-viral post on X, sharing the story of her eight long hours of detention. Her account has sparked a conversation about the treatment of Indian flyers abroad. This comes amid the US tightening immigration policies and security checks amid Trump’s return to the White House in January. Here’s what Chaturvedi said in her post .
