This Week in Explainers: How safe are Hindus in Canada?

The K-factor continued to grab headlines across the world. The growing Khalistan presence in Canada is a reason to worry. The Justin Trudeau government seems to be doing little about it and India has been fuming. Hindus in Canada are facing a threat from pro-Khalistan forces and it brought to the fore new and frightening revelations about the plans of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, chief of the banned Sikhs for Justice group, to divide India on religious lines. Beyond Canada, pro-Khalistan supporters are also becoming a menace in the United Kingdom. An Indian diplomat was denied entry in a gurdwara in Glasgow during a visit to Scotland. The Indian High Commission has raised the “disgraceful incident” with the UK foreign office. Will this lead to a fresh standoff? We shall find out soon. Another threat continues to loom large: climate change. Here is how it plays on the minds and plans of tourists. All of this and more in our recap of the top international stories from the week. 1. The diplomatic stand-off between New Delhi and Ottawa seems to only be getting worse. But despite Justin Trudeau’s protestations of only wanting good relations with India, things have been bad for Hindus in Canada for a while now. This piece examines the threats faced by the community and the many attacks  on its places of worship. 2. You can’t speak of Hindus being openly threatened in Canada without looking at Gurpatwant Singh Pannun – who warned the community to leave the country. Pannun, a lawyer based in New York, is the head of the banned fringe group Sikhs For Justice. Here is what intelligence has revealed about Pannun, who wants to divide India on religious lines. 3. Planning a getaway from work anytime soon? You’re not the only one. Yet, now people around the world are being forced to rethink their travel plans due to climate change. [caption id=“attachment_13174812” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] Tourism destinations are starting to take note — and get worried — about the toll climate change could take on this enormous industry. AP[/caption] We take a thorough look at the unpredictable weather around the world,   the hottest destinations (pun very much intended) and the potential toll it could take on the industry. 4. The Afghanistan embassy in India shut down two years after the Taliban took control of Kabul. The mission informed India that it was forced to close because of the lack of cooperation from the Taliban regime and New Delhi. But India has a different story to tell. What happens next? Will the Taliban take control of the embassy in New Delhi? We explain . 5. Do you like to shop online? But of course you do! Then you might want to keep a close eye on the landmark US government lawsuit against Amazon. Only the future of online shopping is at stake. Some experts even say they could see the trillion-dollar company being broken up. No biggie! [caption id=“attachment_13190452” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] People look at the new iPhone 15 Pro as Apple’s new iPhone 15 officially goes on sale across China, at a store in Shanghai. The Pro models are facing overheating issues because of the new design aimed to make the devices lighter. Reuters[/caption] 6. Are you one of those Apple stans? Did you just spend more than a lakh to get your hands on the new iPhone 15? Turns out, it is too hot to handle. But overheating is just one of the many grimes of early users. We explain all that is going wrong with the high-end models. Enjoy our top reads and watch out this space for more.   PS: If you like the way we explain, catch all our stories here .
