All about Russia's plan to allow Indians to travel without visa, other visa-free countries

Indian travellers are exploring the world like never before, and keeping pace with this surge is a growing list of countries opening their doors through visa-free policies.

With the Indian middle class on the rise and global tourism recovering post-pandemic, nations across the world are increasingly recognising India’s potential as a key tourism market.

Russia is the latest country to join this trend, announcing visa-free entry for Indian tourists, starting next year. This move, along with similar initiatives by other countries, reflects a shift in global tourism policies, making it easier for Indians to explore international destinations.

The aim of visa-free travel is to simplify entry procedures. Travellers only need their passports, avoiding lengthy application processes and visa fees.

Here’s a closer look at the countries welcoming Indian tourists with visa-free access in 2024.

Russia

Indian tourists may soon visit Russia without the need for a visa, with visa-free entry expected to begin by spring 2025. This follows the talks in June 2024 between both countries to simplify visa rules and promote group tourism.

At present, Indian travellers need a visa to visit Russia, depending on the purpose of their travel—whether it’s for tourism, business, work, study, or humanitarian reasons. One popular option is the Unified E-Visa (UEV), introduced in August 2023, which allows personal and business visits with applications processed in just four days.

In January 2024 alone, Russia issued 1,700 e-visas to Indian tourists, demonstrating the growing interest among Indian travellers. The capital city of Moscow also welcomed 28,500 Indian visitors in the first half of 2024—a 1.5-fold increase compared to the previous year.

Sri Lanka

Starting October 1, 2024, Sri Lanka has introduced visa-free access for Indian citizens, further strengthening ties between the two nations.

“This visa-free entry will be available for a period of six months,” said Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando, as quoted by PTI. This policy is expected to encourage more Indian travellers to explore Sri Lanka’s scenic landscapes and cultural heritage

Thailand

Thailand has indefinitely extended its visa-free policy for Indian travellers, making it easier than ever for Indians to visit the Southeast Asian destination.

Under the new policy, Indian visitors can stay in Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days. This period can be further extended by 30 days through a local immigration office.

The policy, initially set to end on November 11, 2024, has been extended indefinitely.

Iran

In February this year, Iran introduced a visa-waiver programme for Indian tourists entering the country by air. However, this visa-free entry comes with specific conditions set by Iranian authorities.

Indian citizens with ordinary passports can travel to Iran without a visa once every six months. Each visit allows a maximum stay of 15 days, which cannot be extended under any circumstances.

The visa waiver is exclusively for tourism purposes and is only applicable for air-border entries. Other modes of entry do not fall under this exemption.

For longer stays, multiple entries within six months, or other visa categories, Indian nationals must apply for the appropriate visa through Iran’s designated representation in India.

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has become a visa-free destination for Indian travellers, offering hassle-free entry since introducing its relaxed visa policy in 2022.

Indian citizens can enjoy a visa-free stay in the Central Asian nation for up to 14 days per visit. According to official guidelines, the maximum permitted duration of visa-free stays is 42 days within a 180-day period.

In 2023, the country welcomed 28,300 Indian visitors, and the numbers continue to rise, reflecting the growing interest in Kazakhstan’s unique culture and landscapes.

Kenya

As of January 1, 2024, Kenya removed visa requirements for Indian travellers, simplifying the process of visiting the East African nation.

Instead of a visa, Indian citizens now need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before their trip. This online system offers a straightforward way to secure travel authorisation.

The move was part of Kenya’s efforts to boost its vital tourism industry, renowned for its iconic wildlife safaris and stunning beach destinations.
