Robert F Kennedy Jr has officially been confirmed by the US Senate as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).
As the head of HHS, Kennedy will oversee major federal health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Medicare and Medicaid programmes.
His confirmation raises questions about the future of US healthcare policies, particularly in areas like vaccine regulation, chronic disease prevention, and environmental health.
RFK Jr’s approach to public health
Kennedy has laid out an ambitious agenda under his “Make America Healthy Again (MAHA)” initiative, which prioritises preventive healthcare over pharmaceutical-driven treatments.
His platform focuses on reducing chronic disease rates by addressing environmental toxins, improving food safety standards, and promoting healthier diets.
A key theme in the MAHA plan is the shift from treating illnesses to preventing them. The initiative categorises America’s health crisis into six major areas, including chronic health conditions, mental health struggles, rising cancer rates, and increasing disability rates.
According to MAHA, about 60 per cent of American adults have at least one chronic disease, while 40 per cent suffer from two or more serious conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Kennedy has long criticised the role of pharmaceutical companies in public health, stating that the system profits from chronic illness rather than seeking to prevent it. “Together we can create a medical system that is designed to heal, rather than prescribe,” reads a statement from the MAHA Action website.
He has also promised to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable and reform regulatory agencies to ensure they prioritise public well-being over corporate interests.
Will RFK Jr ban vaccines?
One of the most contentious aspects of Kennedy’s appointment is his long history of skepticism toward vaccines.
While he has denied being “anti-vaccine,” Kennedy has repeatedly promoted claims that vaccines cause autism and questioned the safety of certain immunisations. His organisation, Children’s Health Defense, has been a major force behind vaccine scepticism in the US.
At his confirmation hearing, Kennedy reiterated that he supports vaccination but believes in informed choice. “If vaccines are working for somebody, I’m not going to take them away. People ought to have a choice, and that choice ought to be informed by the best information,” he said in an interview with NBC last month.
However, public health experts remain concerned about his past rhetoric and whether his leadership will impact vaccine policies, including research funding and approvals.
The pharmaceutical industry has already reacted to Kennedy’s confirmation, with stocks of major vaccine manufacturers such as Moderna, Pfizer, and Merck declining after his appointment was announced.
While Kennedy has not explicitly stated plans to halt vaccine development or approval, questions remain about how his leadership will influence federal vaccine policies.
Food safety, Environmental toxins & Healthcare reform
Beyond vaccines, Kennedy has positioned himself as a strong advocate for food safety and environmental health. He has been vocal about banning certain food dyes and additives, pointing to European standards as a model for US regulations.
“We have 1,000 ingredients in our food that are illegal in Europe, and they’re making our kids sick,” Kennedy had alleged in the interview.
Kennedy has also promised to address environmental pollutants, which he believes are a leading cause of chronic illnesses, including reproductive health issues. “RFK Jr. is going to clean up our air, soil, and water to protect health and our planet,” reads a statement from the MAHA Action website.
He has previously campaigned against industrial toxins and pesticides and has pledged to hold corporations accountable for environmental damage that impacts public health.
Additionally, Kennedy has proposed significant staffing changes within the NIH, FDA, and CDC, suggesting that those who have been involved in what he calls “corrupt systems” should be removed. He has hinted at plans to restructure these agencies to align with his vision for healthcare reform.
RFK Jr’s contentious confirmation
Kennedy’s confirmation was met with a divided response in the Senate, passing with a narrow 52-48 vote. While all Democrats and two independents opposed his appointment, most Republicans supported him, with the exception of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who joined the opposition.
Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, a doctor and key Republican figure, initially expressed concerns about Kennedy’s vaccine stance but ultimately voted in favour of his confirmation after receiving reassurances.
The previous Biden administration and many public health experts have voiced strong concerns about Kennedy’s appointment. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticised the decision, stating, “RFK Jr is a danger to public health. Every Republican senator who votes yes will own the consequences.”
In addition to policy shifts at HHS, Kennedy is stepping into his role at a time of broader governmental upheaval. A federal funding shakeup, spearheaded by billionaire Elon Musk, has already led to significant budget cuts in public health research, including NIH grants for cancer and Alzheimer’s research.
Kennedy has indicated he supports a major restructuring of federal health agencies, further fuelling uncertainty about the direction of US healthcare policy under his leadership.
