Raje, Gehlot, Baghel and more… The big winners and losers of the Assembly elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in a celebratory mood. The party has registered huge wins in the Hindi heartland of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The results also provide the BJP with a boost ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, the Congress can take solace in their victory in the state of Telangana, unseating the current regime of K Chandrasekhar Rao. As celebrations continue, here’s a look at how some of the biggest names in the fray have fared. MADHYA PRADESH Shivraj Singh Chouhan

The current chief minister from the BJP has won from Budhni seat for a sixth time by defeating Congress’ actor-turned-politician Vikram Mastal by a margin of 1,04,974 votes. Chouhan, the longest serving CM of MP, first won from Budhni Assembly seat in 1990, before winning a bypoll in 2006 and retaining the seat in 2008,2013 and 2018. Fondly called ‘mama’ by his supporters, Chouhan was not projected as the party’s face this time. He and several BJP leaders have routinely claimed his ‘Ladli Behana Yojana’, under which eligible women get Rs 1,250 per month, is a game changer. Kamal Nath

His party may not have achieved the desirable results in the state, but Kamal Nath has won from the Chhindwara seat. The Congress veteran has registered a win with a margin of over 35,000 votes against his closest contender, the BJP’s Vivek Bunty Sahu. The 76-year-old holds the record for being continuously elected as an MP from Chhindwara since 1980 and he became the chief minister of the state for the first time in 2019, albeit only for 15 months. Narendra Singh Tomar The BJP’s gamble of fielding the Union agricultural minister, Narendra Singh Tomar, from the Dimani Assembly seat has paid off. The minister has won against BSP’s Balveer Singh Dandotiya with a margin of 24,461 votes. Incidentally, Dimani lies within the parliamentary constituency of Morena, which is presently held by Tomar. Narottam Mishra Narottam Mishra, the home minister of the state, contesting from his sitting seat of Datia has lost against Congress leader Rajendra Bharti. In the past, Mishra has secured a win from this seat. In 2013, he won the Datia seat by defeating Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti with a margin of 12,081 votes. In 2018, he again won the seat by defeating Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti with a margin of 2,656 votes. Kailash Vijayvargiya

The BJP’s national general secretary has won from the Indore-1 constituency where he faced off against Congress candidate Sanjay Shukla. In the previous election, Shukla had secured a win against BJP candidate Arya Sudarshan Gupta with a margin of 8,163 votes. RAJASTHAN Vasundhara Raje

The former chief minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje , has won the Jhalrapatan assembly constituency in Rajasthan. She has repeated her win from the seat, a feat she has been performing since 2003. Data revealed that Raje won the Jhalrapatan seat by a margin of 53,193 votes. The BJP leader has secured a total of 1,38,831 votes. Ashok Gehlot

The chief minister of the state, fighting from the Sardarpura Assembly constituency, has won his seat with a margin of over 26,000 votes. In the fray with Ashok Gehlot was Shaitan Singh from ASP(K), Suraiya Begam from IPGP, and Professor Dr Mahendra Rathore  from BJP, along with a host of independent candidates. Rajyavardhan Rathore

The former Union minister, Rathore, has proven his mettle by winning the Jhhotwara seat. Rathore, a former Union minister, secured 1,47,913 votes and defeated his nearest rival Abhishek Choudhary of the Congress. BJP rebel Ashu Singh Surpura, who contested as an independent candidate, stood in the third position with 55,159 votes. Sachin Pilot

The former deputy chief minister of the state, Sachin Pilot, has secured a victory in his constituency of Tonk against BJP’s Ajit Singh Mehta. Pilot is perceived as the “son of the soil” in his Assembly constituency. CP Joshi A veteran of the Congress and Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly, Joshi has lost from the Nathdwara constituency. BJP’s Vishwaraj Singh Mewar has won the Assembly seat with a margin of 7,504 votes. Kirodi Lal Meena Meena, a famous face in the BJP from the state, has emerged triumphant from the Sawai Madhopur constituency. Since 1998, Sawai Madhopur has interchangeably elected Congress and BJP legislators. Meena had previously won the seat in 2003. TELANGANA  K Chandrashekar Rao [caption id=“attachment_13459462” align=“alignnone” width=“640”] KCR is unlikely to return as the CM for a third term in Telangana.[/caption] KCR contested this year’s polls from two seats – Gajwel and Kamareddy. While his party is set for a defeat, he has been able to retain the Gajwel seat against his closest rival, BJP’s Eatala Rajendar. In Kamareddy, he lost to BJP’s KV Ramana Reddy , now being dubbed as the ‘Giant Slayer’. KT Rama Rao Son of KCR, KT Rama Rao contested this year’s polls from Sircilla, which he won. In the previous Assembly elections, he had emerged victorious with a vote count of 1,25,213 votes and a margin of 89,009 votes. He had defeated the Indian National Congress’ Kondam Karuna Mahender Reddy. Bandi Sanjay Kumar The fiery BJP leader has lost from Karimnagar. He was up against BRS’ Gangula Kamalakar, and Congress’ Purumalla Srinivas. This was the third time the BJP leader had squared off against Kamalakar. Revanth Reddy Revanth Reddy , the president of Telangana Congress unit is known for his people connect. Reddy, considered the architect behind Congress’ win in the state, has also won his individual seat in Kodangal. Akbaruddin Owaisi

Akbaruddin Owaisi, the younger of the Owaisi brothers representing the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, contested from the Chandrayangutta seat and has won. With a win from the seat, he has repeated his performance. In 2018, he scored a win by defeating BJP candidate Shahejadi Sayyad with a margin of 80,263 votes. CHHATTISGARH Bhupesh Baghel

Congress’ Bhupesh Baghel has won from the Patan seat. The seat was witnessing a triangular contest with BJP fielding the chief minister’s distant nephew and Lok Sabha MP Vijay Baghel. Amit Jogi, Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) state president and son of former CM late Ajit Jogi, was also in the fray from Patan. TS Singh Deo Chhattisgarh deputy chief minister TS Singh Deo from the Congress party has lost from Ambikapur, a tribal-dominated seat in north Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district. Deo had been a constant winner from this seat. Earlier, he had won the seat by defeating BJP candidate Anurag Singh Deo with a margin of 39,624 votes. Raman Singh

BJP’s Raman Singh, who served as the former chief minister of the state, has won in Rajnandgaon against Congress’ Girish Dewangan. Rajnandgaon constituency is considered to be Dr Raman Singh’s home turf as he has been elected from the constituency for three consecutive terms. In the 2018 Chhattisgarh elections, the BJP leader won from the constituency after he secured 80,589 votes and a vote percentage of 51.7 per cent. Amit Jogi Amit Jogi, the son of Chhattisgarh’s first chief minister Ajit Jogi, has lost to Bhupesh Baghel from the Patan constituency. With inputs from agencies
