27-year-old Telangana student shot dead in US: What we know so far

A 27-year-old student from Telangana was shot dead in Wisconsin, US, during a suspected robbery by unidentified attackers.

The student has been identified as Praveen Kumar Gampa.

India’s Consulate General in Chicago expressed sorrow over the incident and stated that they are in touch with Gampa’s family.

Praveen’s family was notified by US authorities on Wednesday morning that his body had been found. His cousin Arun told PTI that his friends said the body was found with bullet wounds.

At least two Indian students from Telangana have allegedly been shot dead in the US in recent months, one from Khammam in November last year and another from Hyderabad in January this year.

1. Praveen, a 26-year-old student from Telangana, was found dead in Milwaukee, early on Wednesday.

2. He was allegedly shot dead by unidentified attackers during a suspected robbery at the place where he worked part-time.

3. According to The Indian Express, he was from Keshampet mandal in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district.

4. Praveen was pursuing a second-year MS in Data Science at the University of Wisconsin.

5. He moved to the US in August 2023 after completing his BTech in Hyderabad. He visited India in December 2024 and returned to the US on January 20, 2025.

6. US authorities informed his family that the cause of death would be determined after an autopsy. His relatives have sought help from MLAs and other leaders.

How did Praveen Kumar Gampa die?

Praveen’s cousin Arun told PTI that some of his friends claimed his body was found with bullet wounds.

He added that while some reports suggested Praveen was shot dead by unidentified attackers at a store, his family had not yet been informed of the exact cause of death.

Speaking to the media, Praveen’s father said he received a WhatsApp call early on Wednesday but missed it as he was asleep. “In the morning, I noticed a missed call and sent a voice message requesting a callback. I didn’t receive a reply for about an hour. Then, we called my son’s number. Someone else answered and said they had found the phone, asking about his date of birth,” he was quoted as saying by The South First.

According to Praveen’s father, robbers targeted the store where his son worked part-time, and he was killed in the shootout that followed.

He said Praveen’s parents were in shock after hearing about the incident.

“The police informed us that Praveen was shot by assailants with a gun. They initially said it was a private gun, then a store gun, and even mentioned it happened near a beach. Later, they sent us an FIR mentioning the incident took place at a store,” Raghavulu was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

In a post on X, the Consulate General of India in Chicago stated, “We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a postgraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen’s family and the University, helping them with all possible support.”

K Kavitha to N Ramchander Rao: What political leaders said on the incident

BRS leader K Kavitha described the student’s death in the US as “very unfortunate” and urged both the Telangana and Central governments to expedite the process of bringing his body home.

Speaking to ANI, she said, “Well, it’s very unfortunate. I heard about that news, and I truly demand that the Telangana government and I request the Central government, to quickly process and get the body home because parents here must be suffering. My prayers are with the family.”

She also advised **Indian students in the US** to stay strong and assured them that the Indian government and embassy would provide support. “My prayers are with the students who are there. They must be frightened and afraid. Please stay brave. Indian embassy, Indian government, I’m sure, will come to your rescue,” she said.

BJP leader N Ramchander Rao called the student’s death an “unfortunate incident” and urged the US government to ensure the safety of legal migrants.

“The incident has shown the **racial discrimination** still going on in the country of USA, wherein we are trying to avoid racial discrimination. But, unfortunately, racial discrimination is being increased in spite of Indians’ contribution to the growth of the US economy,” he said.
