Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora was arrested on Monday after police found nearly Rs 2 crore in cash and jewellery at her residences.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that she had been under investigation for allegedly taking money to help register government and Satra land in the names of suspected illegal settlers.
The police found the cash and jewellery during a raid at Bora’s house in Guwahati. Raids were also carried out at three other places, including her rented house in Barpeta.
But who is Nupur Bora? What exactly did she do?
Let’s take a look:
Who is Nupur Bora?
She is an Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer who joined the service in 2019.
Bora was born on March 31, 1989, and comes from Golaghat district in Assam.
She served as a Circle Officer in Goroimari, located in Kamrup district.
Bora has studied English Literature at Gauhati University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, and also attended Cotton College.
As mentioned on her Facebook profile, she worked as a lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) before entering the civil service.
Her administrative journey began as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong, a post she held from March 2019 to June 2023. She later worked as a Circle Officer in Barpeta in June 2023 before being moved to Kamrup.
What happened?
She was arrested on Monday for allegedly owning assets far beyond her known income.
The police seized about Rs 90 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth over Rs 1 crore. The total value of the recovery is estimated to be around Rs 2 crore.
Speaking to the media, the Assam Chief Minister said she had been under watch for six months after complaints were received about her alleged role in disputed land deals.
He said that during her time as circle officer in Barpeta district, Bora allegedly helped register government and Satra land under the names of suspected illegal settlers, whom he referred to as “Miyaan”.
Backing the state’s case, local activist group Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), led by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, lodged a formal complaint against her.
The universe keeps its balance.

According to the complaint, the bribes ranged from Rs 1,500 for land maps to Rs 2 lakh for adding or removing names in land records, News18 reported.
The Special Vigilance Cell also raided the home of Nupur Bora’s alleged aide, Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, who works at the Revenue Circle Office in Barpeta.
NDTV reported that he is accused of buying several plots in Barpeta with her help while she worked there as Circle Officer.
Rosy Kalita, the superintendent of police with the chief minister’s vigilance cell, who led the search, said several corruption complaints against her are being looked into.
She added that the cash and gold recovered were only from an initial raid, and further checks could uncover more evidence.
Notably, the raid was first planned for Sunday night but had to be delayed as the officer was not at home and was said to be staying at a guest house.
The operation was then carried out early on Monday morning after she returned. It began at her home in Guwahati and later moved to three other places connected to her.
