Balasore Student Suicide Case
The Greater Noida incident comes after a student at a college in Odisha set herself on fire, allegedly after college authorities ignored her complaints of sexual harassment by a professor.
The woman attempted self-immolation on July 12 on the college campus. She suffered more than 90 per cent burn injuries and died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on July 14.
Speaking to India Today, her father said, “She did this after coming out of the principal’s room. Something must have happened. I was not there…My daughter was forced to die. They should all be charged.”
He further claimed that police did not respond to his concerns despite him submitting a three-page statement. He said he was informed about the suicide through a phone call.
Calling the incident a “conspiracy”, the father accused the college of driving his daughter to suicide because she had dared to speak up, according to the report.
The student had filed a formal complaint with the college’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), accusing the professor of continuous sexual harassment. She had said that the college authorities took no action despite repeated appeals for help.
Her death has led to massive outrage across Odisha.
