After being on the run for 72 hours, Mihir Shah, the son of Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, has been arrested by the Mumbai Police. As per a News18 report, the 24-year-old accused in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case, was nabbed from Shahpur in Thane and will be brought to the Worli police station.
Shah has been accused of allegedly driving a BMW car, which fatally knocked down a woman, Kaveri Nakhwa (45), and injured her husband Pradeep while the couple was on their two-wheeler in Mumbai’s Worli area on Sunday morning.
Shah’s arrest comes after the authorities had formed six teams to arrest him and also issued a Look Out Circular to prevent him from fleeing the country.
Here’s a revisit of who Shah exactly is and the fatal crash that put him in the spotlight.
The hit-and-run incident
The woman, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, and her husband Pradip, 50, were returning to their home in Worli Koliwada after buying fish from Sassoon Dock in Colaba, according to News18.
While they were travelling on the arterial Annie Besant Road, the driver of the BMW car lost control at around 5.25 am and hit their bike, according to Worli police.

She was rushed to a nearby Nair hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Her husband was discharged after treatment.
According to Hindustan Times, the driver was taking Mihir Shah back home, however, upon reaching Worli, he insisted on driving the car. Shortly after he took over the wheels, the accident took place.
Shah was accompanied by Rajrishi Bidawar, who is in his early thirties. According to the investigation, the duo were returning home from a long drive at Marine Drive.
News18 report states that the BMW was later abandoned in Kala Nagar in the Bandra East area. The forensic team visited Worli Police Station to inspect the car.
Shah and Bidawat reportedly fled in an auto-rickshaw. The latter came to Borivali after the accident and was soon detained by police. He is currently in police custody.
About Mihir Shah
The 24-year-old is the son of Rajesh Shah, the deputy leader of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) in Palghar district.
He studied till Class 10 and did not pursue education thereafter, as per Mint. He was helping his father with his construction and real estate business in Maharashtra.
Shah is on the run and the police are trying to arrest him.
Hours before the car crash, Shah along with his friends went to a Juhu pub.
According to India Today, the pub owner, however, said he did not have an alcoholic beverage, but only drank Red Bull. The accused and his friend reportedly spent Rs 18,000 at the bar, as per Mint.
Currently, police are probing whether he was drunk at the time of the incident.
Shah has been booked under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sahita, including 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 281 (rash and negligent driving endangering human life), 125-B (endangering life and personal safety), 238, 324(4) (committing mischief amounting to cause loss and damage), as per India Today.
The accused’s father arrested, girlfriend questioned
Initial probe suggests that he went to his girlfriend’s house before absconding. The police are questioning her for giving refuge to the accused.
Rajesh Shah, Mihir’s father, was arrested after hours-long questioning by the police. The arrest came after it was found that the BMW car was registered in his name.
The driver of the vehicle has also been detained.
The 24-year-old accused’s mother, and his two sisters are also absconding after locking the house, according to Mint.
The victim’s husband breaks down
After the fatal BMW crash, Pradeep Nakhava broke down while speaking to the media. He claimed that those involved in the accident were “big people” and nobody will do anything.
Nakhava speaking to Hindustan Times, said, “The accident happened at 5.30 am, the car came from behind and rammed into the scooter. I fell on the left side, but my wife was dragged through the road,” he said. “I have two children, what will I do? These are big people, nobody will do anything, we will suffer.”
‘Law is equal for all’
Speaking about the incident, CM Eknath Shinde said the law was equal for everyone and no would be spared.
“The law is equal for all and the government sees every case in the same way. There will be no separate rule for this accident. Everything will be done as per the law. The police will not shield anyone. The Mumbai accident is unfortunate. I have spoken to the police department to take strict action,” he said.
Aaditya Thackeray reaches Worli police station
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray visited Worli police station and also assured the deceased’s husband of all help to bring justice.
“I don’t want to make this political, Whoever the driver is, should be arrested,” he said, adding, “Whether the accused belongs to ‘gaddar’ gang, we don’t want to make it political."
He emphasised the revelation of information by CCTV footage while demanding quick action in the case.
Porsche car crash
Notably, the case comes less than two months after the Porsche accident case that took place on May 19 in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar.
Two IT professionals, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh, were killed after the Porsche, allegedly driven by an inebriated minor driver, rammed into their bike.
The case made headlines after the accused minor was given bail by the Juvenile Justice Board on lenient terms. The Pune police also found efforts by his parents to cover up the incident.
The accused’s parents and doctors of Sassoon Hospital reportedly switched blood samples to nullify alcohol tests.
The family also forced the driver to take the blame for the crash.
