What we know about Deepinder Goyal
Deepinder Goyal, 41, is the founder of Zomato, a food delivery platform headquartered in Gurugram.
Hailing from Muktsar in Punjab, he finished his pre-university education at Chandigarh. Shortly after graduating from college in 2005, he started working for consultancy firm Bain and Company, according to Hindustan Times.
He founded Zomato (then known as Foodiebay.com) in 2008 from his own apartment.
Since then, Zomato has developed into one of the leading food delivery companies in India, operating in more than 1,000 cities, as per Financial Express.
As per HT, about three years ago, Goyal became one of the richest people in India as a result of Zomato’s blockbuster listing.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, he had a $650 million net worth at the time due to his ownership of his meal delivery business.
He was previously married to Kanchan Joshi, whom he met during his days at IIT Delhi. In an interview with Forbes, Goyal revealed that the two were in the same Mathematics and Computing department.
Joshi currently works as a mathematics professor at Delhi University.
Zomato’s ‘pure veg’ controversy
Goyal was in the news recently, a few days ago, when Zomato said that it was going to launch a “pure veg” service in response to feedback from customers.
To guarantee that the delivery partners handling these orders don’t carry any non-vegetarian foods, this service will only collaborate with vegetarian eateries.
Criticism came about the introduction of separate uniforms for vegetarian and non-vegetarian delivery fleets.
Zomato promptly resolved the issues raised by announcing that orders placed through the vegetarian mode would be delivered by riders donning the company’s iconic red attire.
Goyal underlined the need for riders’ safety and made it clear that, although there would still be a fleet reserved for vegetarians, all riders would now wear the same red uniform, meaning there would be no physical separation between the two fleets.
