Singer Liam Payne’s untimely death last year shook the music industry.

Many questions have been raised concerning the incident’s circumstances.

The medical cause of the former One Direction member’s death has been confirmed as “polytrauma” during a UK inquest.

But what is it exactly? Let’s take a look.

Polytrauma

It is a term for multiple traumatic injuries which have been sustained to a person’s body and organ systems.

It frequently occurs in severe impact situations, such as car accidents or falls from great heights.

The NHS defines polytrauma as a condition in which a patient has experienced several injuries that could be life-threatening or cause a disability.

Symptoms can include less apparent problems like memory loss, confusion, and poor decision-making, as well as obvious ones like major bleeding or fractures.

X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs are commonly used to diagnose polytrauma in order to determine the complete extent of the injuries.

Medical cause of death determined

Dr Roberto Victor Cohen confirmed Payne’s medical cause of death as “polytrauma.”

The hearing, which was held at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on 17 December, was also told that it may take “some time” to determine the exact cause of the 31-year-old pop singer’s death.

Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said during the hearing: “Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”

The inquest into Payne’s death in the UK has been adjourned until a pre-inquest review on November 6, the coroner’s court said.

Ongoing legal proceedings

Five people have been charged in relation to Payne’s death.

According to a prior statement from Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office, these include Payne’s friend Roger Nores, hotel manager Gilda Martin, and receptionist Esteban Grassi. All of them are charged with manslaughter.

The musician is believed to have gotten cocaine from two additional suspects: waiter Braian Paiz and hotel staff David Ezequiel Pereyra.

The case’s presiding judge, Laura Bruniard, criticised Nores for allegedly failing his duty of care to Payne.

According to the prosecution, Nores left Payne even though he was aware of his substance-abuse-related vulnerability.

According to The Mirror, Nores has refuted these claims, stating that he visited Payne three times on the day of his demise and left him in good spirits.

The judge noted, “I do not believe that (Nores, Martin, and Grassi) planned and wanted Payne’s death. They did not plan the result but created a legally disapproved risk.”

Bruniard further claimed that the singer, under the influence of drugs, attempted to leave the building by jumping off the balcony of his hotel.

“Payne’s consciousness was altered and a balcony was in the room. The proper thing to do was to leave him in a safe place, and with company, until a doctor arrived,” she wrote, adding that the hotel employees who had taken him back to his room “did not act maliciously” but were “imprudent” in their actions.

‘Multiple trauma’

Liam Payne, 31, died after falling from the third storey of the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16, 2024.

Shortly after 5 pm local time, Payne’s body was discovered on the boutique hotel’s internal patio. At first, it was stated that he had “severe injuries which were incompatible with life.”

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Prosecutors found that before the fatal balcony fall, Payne had used prescription antidepressants, cocaine , and alcohol. The musician had previously admitted that he battled substance abuse and the difficulties of being an early stardom.

The star died from several traumas and internal and external bleeding, according to a post-mortem examination.

He was probably in “partial or total unconsciousness” when he fell, according to officials, who ruled out suicide.

The singer’s funeral was held in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in November.

In addition to Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy and his ex-partner Cheryl, with whom he has a kid, the mourners included his former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik.

Payne rose to fame with the boyband One Direction in the 2010s before the band went on an indefinite break in January 2016.
