The alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has sparked nationwide protests, demanding justice.

It has also raised questions about women’s safety in West Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.

On Sunday, the parents of the 31-year-old victim expressed their displeasure with Banerjee’s apparent double-standard approach in the case, saying that they have refused any compensation.

‘Unhappy with the CM’

The parents of the victim accused CM Banerjee of suppressing the demonstrations calling for justice for their brutally murdered daughter and of trying to “hush up the case as soon as possible.”

“We are not satisfied with the chief minister. We are unhappy with the CM. We have refused to take any compensation,” the victim’s father told ANI, and expressed his displeasure over the lack of outcome following the probe.

The mother also added, “She (CM Banerjee) said that the culprit will be arrested as soon as possible, but nothing has happened so far.”

For the rest of the state’s residents, the woman’s mother had a word of advice: “All the schemes by Mamata Banerjee — the Kanyashree scheme and the Lakshmi scheme — are all pseudo. Whoever wants to avail these schemes, before availing them kindly see if your Lakshmi at home safe,” as per Deccan Herald.

Double standard approach

Speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Sunday, the victim’s father said, “The Chief Minister speaks at length, walking the streets demanding justice for my daughter. Yet, at the same time, she attempts to suppress public anger. Why is she engaging in duplicity? Is she afraid of people? We have questions that need answers.”

For those uninitiated, Banerjee had led a rally this week demanding the death penalty for the guilty in the case.

“Those who are protesting freely are finding their voices stifled by the Chief Minister. While she herself takes to the streets in protest, she is simultaneously making arrangements to ensure that others’ protests do not take place,” the father said.

According to News18, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal also accused Mamata Banerjee of stifling the protests.

“The CM is talking about providing justice, but then attempts are being made to put the common people demanding justice in jail. When she herself wants justice, she takes to the streets and now she stops the public,” he said.

Misleading the family

The doctor’s parents stated that they were told over the phone on August 9 in the morning that their daughter had committed suicide at the hospital where she was employed.

“First we got a call from the hospital that your daughter is sick, then the call was disconnected. After that when I called and asked what happened, they told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) identified himself as Assistant Super and said your daughter has committed suicide,” the mother of the trainee doctor said, as per News18.

When asked about the possibility that if more than one person was involved in the crime, her father told NDTV, “We have been saying that from the beginning. All the people we spoke to, even MBBS doctors. agreed that it was not possible for one person to do so much damage.

The saddest part of the whole matter, he said, was that the people who were responsible for his daughter’s safety failed to discharge that duty.

“As parents, we worry when our child is on the road, not so much when she reaches her workplace. Like we used to drop her to school. Once she is inside the gates, we are relieved. Now she was grown up. The roads were a problem, so we got her a car also,” he told the news channel.

‘Hush up the case’

The father of the victim claimed that his daughter’s body was cremated first, even though there were other bodies queued for cremation.

“There were three bodies at the crematorium but our daughter’s body was cremated ahead of them. We were so upset and in a state of shock after losing our only child that we couldn’t think or act at the time,” he said, as per The Times of India.

“They only tried to hush up the case as soon as possible. Their attempt was to get the post-mortem done as soon as possible and remove the body,” the mother said, referring to the Kolkata commissioner of police.

The victim’s father also questioned the way the police enquired about the case before the CBI took over on Calcutta High Court’s orders.

“Nothing came out of the inquiry… Nobody from the (chest medicine) department or the college cooperated with us. The entire department is responsible for my daughter’s murder… we suspect some people in the department were involved in the crime,” he said, as per TOI.

As per a report by The Economic Times, the father claimed they have doubts if she was killed in the seminar room.

“I doubt if my daughter was killed in seminar. When she last spoke to her mother, she said they will dinner at 11.15 at seminar hall,” he said, adding that she wrote in her diary every day and her diary was seized.

“I was present when the seizure list was being prepared. The police took out some reports and medicines from my daughter’s bag. They were trying to divert the case. They told me ‘your daughter was sick, she used to have so many medicines. There are many reports,” the report quoted the parent as saying.

Calls for resignation

The mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, has demanded the resignation of CM Banerjee, saying she “failed” to handle the situation in West Bengal after massive protests broke out.

Speaking to PTI, Asha Devi also slammed Banerjee for “trying to divert people’s attention” by holding protests.

“Instead of using her authority to take action against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public,” she said, adding, “She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation.”

Devi also said that until central and state governments get serious about seeking swift punishment from the court for rapists, such brutality will continue to take place in different parts of the country every day.

“When girls are not safe in Kolkata’s medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, then one can understand the state of women’s safety in the country,” she said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday also sought Banerjee’s immediate resignation, saying that there were attempts to destroy the evidence in the case.

At a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said women in West Bengal under Banerjee as the Chief Minister were not feeling safe. He said how the case was initially mishandled showed the ground situation in the state.

The investigation

The second-year postgrad had gone to an empty seminar room alone herself that evening to catch some sleep after working a 36-hour shift. There is no on-call room at the hospital.

The following morning, August 9, her partially clothed body was discovered there with several injuries.

The primary suspect is Sanjoy Roy, a Kolkata Police volunteer who served as a civil servant and was given access to every department while he was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

According to NDTV, CCTV footage showing him entering the building where the doctor’s body had been found murdered served as the basis for his arrest. A Bluetooth headset found next to the victim’s body was seen on his neck in the CCTV footage. It turned out that his phone had been linked with it.

Roy reportedly confessed to the crime shortly after police began questioning him, according to local media. He had nonchalantly informed the cops, “Hang me if you want,” according to the reports.

In connection with the case, the CBI’s investigating officials are examining the call logs and conversations of Sandip Ghosh , the former principal of the hospital.

To date, the CBI has interrogated more than 20 people concerning its inquiry, including two Kolkata Police officials, as per News18.

According to a central probe agency officer, Ghosh was questioned about his phone calls both before and after the incident when he appeared before the officers on Sunday for the third day in a row.
