29-year-old Joshua Jahn has been identified as the man who opened fire on three migrants at an immigration centre in Texas.

Officials confirmed that he died after shooting himself.

One of the bullets fired by Jahn had the words ‘anti-ICE’ written on it and was directed at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas.

This is the second time in two weeks that a gunman has taken position on a rooftop, used a rifle to fire shots and left a written message on the bullets.

So, who was Joshua Jahn? And what was the motive behind the shooting?

Let’s take a look:

Who is Joshua Jahn?

He was a North Texas native with a record of past arrests and possible links to Oklahoma, as records suggest he may have been living in Durant when the shooting took place.

He was the son of parents from different political backgrounds, one Democrat and one Republican, but relatives said Jahn showed little interest in politics, according to British newspaper The Telegraph.

Investigators found bullet casings near his body marked with the words “anti-ICE”. This led many in the Trump administration to describe the attack as radical Left-wing violence.

He grew up in Allen, Texas, and in 2016 pleaded guilty to selling marijuana. Records from Collin County, seen by the newspaper, state that he was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and fined $500.

A mugshot shared online shows him as a white man with brown hair and eyes, standing 6ft tall and weighing 210lb.

He was registered as an independent voter and last cast his ballot in the 2024 presidential election, NBC reported.

His brother Noah, 30, said politics was not something Joshua spoke about and that he had never expressed opposition to ICE to his family. “He didn’t have strong feelings about ICE as far as I knew,” Noah told NBC.

He described his brother as “unique” and said he never imagined he would commit a shooting with a political message.

As a child, Joshua joined the Boy Scouts in Allen, Texas. Photos on his father Andy’s Facebook account show them fishing together when he was young.

He studied mechanical engineering for a year at the University of Texas before moving to Collin Community College, where he took up computer science. He later received a certificate from Imagine Solar, a renewable energy company in Austin.

Noah said his brother had done coding work but was unemployed and considering moving to their parents’ land in Oklahoma.

Both of his parents, Sharon and Andy, studied at the University of Kansas. Sharon, a Democrat, once ran a massage parlour and has supported stronger gun control laws, while Andy is registered as a Republican.

Did Joshua’s car display a ‘nuclear fallout’ message?

Investigators found a blue Toyota Corolla, believed to belong to Jahn, The New York Post reported.

On the car’s right rear quarter panel, there was a worn printout of a map with a message above it that read, “Radioactive fallout from nuclear detonations have passed over these areas more than 2x since 1951.”

The map is thought to have been produced by researcher Richard Miller and highlights parts of the United States crossed more than twice by radioactive clouds from nuclear tests carried out in Nevada during the 1950s and 1960s.

What was the motive for the shooting?

Officials have not confirmed the reason behind the attack on the Dallas ICE facility. However, FBI Director Kash Patel released a photo of a bullet found at the scene with the words “anti ICE” written on it in marker.

“These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off. We are only miles from Prarieland, Texas where just two months ago an individual ambushed a separate ICE facility targeting their officers. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice,” Patel posted on X.

The FBI confirmed it was treating the case as “an act of targeted violence.”

It is also worth noting that Jahn’s mother, Sharon, had used Facebook in the past to criticise Texas Republican lawmakers over their support of the Second Amendment and called for stricter gun laws.
