US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he plans to nominate Jared Isaacman, a tech billionaire and the first private astronaut to conduct a spacewalk, as Nasa’s next chief.

“Jared will drive Nasa’s mission of discovery and inspiration, paving the way for groundbreaking achievements in Space science, technology, and exploration,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Isaacman has been a close associate of Elon Musk, who has been at Trump’s elbow throughout the transition and has been tapped to lead a government efficiency commission. The billionaire private astronaut has even collaborated extensively with SpaceX, Musk’s space exploration company, on several missions, including the one where he made headlines with his historic spacewalk.

Here’s a closer look at Isaacman’s journey.

He founded his tech company at 16

Jared Isaacman, the CEO and founder of Shift4 Payments, began his entrepreneurial journey at just 16 years old. His billion-dollar enterprise now processes payments for major clients, including Hilton and KFC.

According to AP, Isaacman’s rise to success started in his parents’ basement after he dropped out of high school, opting to earn a General Educational Development (GED) certificate instead. This humble beginning laid the foundation for his tech giant company Shift4.

Today, Shift4 handles over $260 billion in payments annually, while Isaacman’s net worth is estimated at $1.9 billion, according to Forbes. His business is based in eastern Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife and their two young daughters.

A self-described “space geek”, Isaacman is an accomplished fighter pilot and holds the world record for the fastest flight around the globe in a light jet. He also owns Draken International, a Florida-based company, that trains US Air Force pilots and has the world’s largest private fleet of fighter jets.

He led a mission to travel the farthest since Apollo

Jared Isaacman has made his mark as one of the few private individuals to explore space, thanks to his collaborations with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

In 2022, Isaacman partnered with SpaceX to launch the ambitious Polaris Program, a series of three private spaceflights designed to test advanced technologies and manoeuvres for deep-space exploration.

As part of the first mission, Polaris Dawn , he joined three other private citizens on a five-day journey in September that took them to the farthest distance (1,400 km) from Earth since Nasa’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing. The mission also included the first-ever all-civilian spacewalk. Issacman even briefly popped out the hatch to test SpaceX’s new spacewalking suits.

Isaacman has reportedly invested $200 million of his own funds into SpaceX’s missions, which include his debut space mission Inspiration4 in 2021.

Reacting to Isaacman’s appointment as Nasa’s head, Musk congratulated him via X, describing him as a man of “high ability and integrity.”

Why is Isaacman’s appointment as Nasa chief significant?

According to CNBC, Trump’s choice of Isaacman, who’s an outsider to traditional government space programmes— along with Musk’s involvement with the incoming administration — suggests that Nasa may move further into the realm of commercial partnerships_._

Already, the space agency relies heavily on SpaceX and other commercial partners to launch its astronauts, cargo and spacecraft to the International Space Station and beyond.

Isaacman, with his background in private space missions, is expected to continue this trend.

His leadership will also come with significant responsibilities, including overseeing Nasa’s $25 billion budget, with a major focus on the Artemis programme. This effort aims to return humans to the Moon and relies heavily on SpaceX’s Starship rocket.

Additionally, he will manage NASA’s aeronautics division, which is focused on green aviation technologies, alongside its space science portfolio.

Isaacman himself expressed his excitement for the role, stating on X that he was “honored” to receive the nomination. “Having been fortunate to see our amazing planet from space, I am passionate about America leading the most incredible adventure in human history,” he wrote.
