In Graphics | Why no former Pakistan PM has completed a full term

In the latest development in Pakistan politics, Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of former premier Nawaz Sharif, is expected to become Pakistan’s next prime minister. The development came as a post-poll alliance of leading political parties struck a deal to form a coalition government after the 8 February elections produced a split mandate. The surprise move means the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan will not be in power, despite independent candidates backed by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) winning the maximum number of seats in Parliament in the last week elections marred by allegations of rigging. Shehbaz Sharif, 72, was nominated as the candidate for the top job instead of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, who was seeking a record fourth term as PM. He returned to Pakistan in October from a self-imposed exile in the UK. As Pakistan is set to get a new leader soon, it is pertinent to mention here that none of the previous PMs have completed a full five-year term in the country’s 77-year history. Here’s a look at all the former Pakistan premiers and how their time in office came to an end.
