Greenland has been on US President Donald Trump’s radar since he assumed office in January. He has threatened to “buy” the semi-autonomous territory many a time. Now, US Second Lady Usha Vance is set to visit the largest island in the world on Thursday (March 27)… uninvited. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is also expected to travel there this week.
Usha Vance will watch the island’s national dogsled race and “celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity,” the White House said. Waltz’s plans remain ambiguous.
The people of Greenland are not happy. Prime Minister Mute B Egede dubbed the trip by the US delegation “highly aggressive”.
Amid mounting flak, the White House said, “This is a visit to learn about Greenland, its culture, history, and people and to attend a dogsled race the United States is proud to sponsor, plain and simple.”
But, why is Trump so interested in Greenland? And can he acquire it?
