At least 20 people were killed on Friday (October 24) after a private bus caught fire following a collision in Kurnool’s Chinna Tekuru village in Andhra Pradesh. The bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru with more than 40 passengers on board.
This comes just over a week after a similar incident killed nearly two dozen in Rajasthan. The bus, which had been travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, caught fire near Thaiyat village on October 14.
Following the incident, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu extended condolences to the victims’ families and directed officials to provide immediate relief and medical assistance to the injured.
But why are bus fires on the rise in India? How common are such tragedies? How quickly do such fires spread?
Let’s take a closer look at the anatomy of a bus fire.
