The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerged victorious in the 18th Lok Sabha elections, bagging 293 seats out of 543. The elections were held from 19 April to 1 June 2024 in seven phases in India to elect its next prime minister. The results were announced on 4 June.
The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDI) gave a tough competition to the BJP, especially in the Hindi-speaking regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan among other states. The INDI Alliance secured 232 seats, performing better than what had been predicted by exit polls.
Interestingly, the general elections witnessed the average age of MP s dropping from 59 years to 56 years. Along with this, several newer faces will be seen in the 18th Lok Sabha, as 52 per cent of MPs are first-timers. As per an analysis conducted by PRS Legislative Research, 281 MPs have been elected for the very first time out of the 543 MPs.
