North India is reeling from the effects of a heatwave currently, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting extreme temperatures till 25 May. A red alert has been issued for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Some places in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat may also experience a heatwave from 23 May.
Schools across several states have declared summer holidays keeping heatwave conditions in mind. In Noida, schools declared holidays for Classes 9 to 12 while the Delhi government ordered those schools that are still holding classes to shut down for immediately.
Delhi recorded maximum temperature at 47.4 degrees Celsius on Monday while states like Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana witnessed temperature raising to 43-45 degrees Celsius range.
