A new study has claimed that the Moon was once covered by a magma ocean.
The analysis, made on data collected by India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission, supports the Lunar Magma theory about the formation of the Moon.
It was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.
The analysis comes from measurements of the lunar soil recorded by the Pragyan rover. It was taken at multiple points along a 100-metre track on the surface of the Moon.
The Chandrayaan-3 mission launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) landed near the south pole of the Moon on August 23, 2023.
Before India’s mission, the main evidence backing the ‘magma oceans’ theory came from the mid-latitudes of the Moon by the US’ Apollo programme, according to the BBC.
