Fali S Nariman, described as a towering figure in the legal fraternity and a champion of constitutional and human values, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95.
Born on 10 January, 1929, in Rangoon (now Myanmar), he was known for his principles, integrity, and courage, resigning as the Additional Solicitor General of India during the 1975 Emergency.
Beginning his legal career in 1950, Nariman argued landmark cases including Kesavananda Bharati, SP Gupta, and the Bhopal gas tragedy in the Supreme Court.
He also received accolades such as the Padma Vibhushan and the Gruber Prize for Justice.
A former Rajya Sabha member, Nariman practised law for over 70 years.
Besides being a renowned legal figure, he was also a prolific author, with his notable works including Before the Memory Fades, The State of the Nation, India’s Legal System: Can it be Saved? and God Save the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
