Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, 2022.
The conflict will enter its third year on Saturday (tomorrow).
However, for some Ukrainians, the beginning of their fight against Russia was not something that happened recently, but rather a long-standing conflict.
The story dates back to a time when people in Ukraine stood up against their government because they wanted their country to be closer to Europe, but the president at the time wanted to be more aligned with Russia. The New York Times reports that these protesters used simple weapons like baseball bats and homemade bombs. Some of the protestors died fighting against the government’s forces.
These demonstrations were part of the Maidan uprising of 2014.
Now, Ukraine is still fighting Russia, facing a difficult situation with little assistance from other countries. But the spirit of those early protesters, who refused to give up even when things looked bleak, continues to inspire Ukrainians today.
The link that Ukrainians draw between the 2014 rebellion and the two-year-old invasion reflects many citizens’ long-term perspective on war: they’ve been fighting Russia for ten years, not two.
