Today (7 October) marks one year since Hamas launched one of the most devastating attacks in Israel’s history.
The assault, which Hamas had dubbed the ‘Al-Aqsa flood,’ caught the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu completely unawares and left the public shocked.
The raid, which coincided with the Jewish Sabbath and the last day of the religious holiday of Sukkot, left over 1,200 dead.
Hamas also took around 250 people as hostages.
The Israeli government responded on October 8 by launching Operation ‘Swords of Iron.’
It vowed it would wipe out Hamas in Gaza and that the hostages would be freed and returned home.
But one year later, around 100 hostages captured that day have not been returned. Cease-fire efforts have ground to a halt.
The war in Gaza rages on and Israel is fighting a new war against Hezbollah.
There is also an escalating conflict with Iran — which backs both Hamas and Hezbollah — that threatens to drag the region into an even more dangerous conflagration.
