Delhi-NCR continues to be engulfed in a thick layer of smog, raising visibility issues. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall air quality index (AQI) stood at 346 and in “severe” category. The levels of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 and 10 have already reached hazardous levels. The situation has forced the government to bring in stringent curbs and bans on all types of constructions and vehicular movements. It has also announced a two-day holiday for all government and public schools. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has called for an urgent meeting with the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Minister of Environment Gopal Rai at 6 pm today in order to discuss the matter. As per Bar and Bench, the Delhi High Court also called out the forest department for passing “non-speaking” and “stereotypical” orders allowing felling of trees in the Capital. As the condition worsens, we take a look at what smog is and how bad it is for our health.
