‘World No Tobacco Day’ is observed on 31 May to create awareness about the ill effects of using tobacco and its products. This initiative was launched by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1987.
Recently, WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia Saima Wazed expressed concern over children and adolescents in the region being regularly exposed to digital marketing of tobacco products, despite preventive policies and regulations in place.
As per the latest India Tobacco Control report , there has also been a significant increase in the overall consumption of tobacco in India, especially among adolescent girls. The report was released by the Union health ministry.
When non-smokers inhale the toxic air emitted by smokers, it is referred to as passive smoking or second-hand smoking. Since passive smoking exposes people to the same dangerous compounds as active smoking, it is a serious public health concern.
