Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been appointed the new private secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She is currently working at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as the Deputy Secretary.

Her new post, which is at Level 12 of the pay matrix, will take effect co-terminus with her current one or until additional directives are given.

The order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on March 29 read, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Ms Nidhi Tewari, IFS (2014), currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, in Level 12 of the pay matrix with immediate effect, on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Who is Nidhi Tewari?

  • Tewari, who may be among the position’s youngest officers, is from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, which PM Modi has represented in Parliament since 2014, according to NDTV.

  • She has progressively developed a career in diplomacy and government.

  • According to News18, she ranked 96th in the Union Public Services Commission’s (UPSC) 2013 Civil Services Examination.

  • While studying for the test, she was employed in Varanasi as the Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax).

  • Prior to joining the PMO, she worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), reported Indian Express.

  • She started at the Prime Minister’s Office in 2022 as an Under Secretary, and in January 2023, she was elevated to the position of Deputy Secretary.

  • She served in the “Foreign and Security” division of the Prime Minister’s Office, where she oversaw security, atomic energy, and external relations.

  • Her knowledge of international relations was helpful when she joined the PMO and worked with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval in the “Foreign and Security” department.

  • Her extensive knowledge was proved essential during India’s presidency of G20.

  • The Prime Minister previously had Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah as his private secretaries.

  • Pawan Yadav, a former Deputy Commissioner of the conflict-plagued Churachandpur district of Manipur, was named Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s private secretary last week.
