Why GST reforms have nothing to do with Trump’s tariffs

The Narendra Modi government introduced sweeping changes to the GST structure, creating a two-tier tax system with rates of 5% and 18%, and a new 40% slab for sin and luxury goods. Prime Minister Modi hailed the GST reforms as a double dose of support and growth for India, benefiting various sections of society including the poor, middle-class, farmers, and women. GST 2.0 will come into effect on September 22, ahead of Dussehra, and is expected to lower retail prices and reduce inflation, boosting household consumption during the festive season.
