The killing of a Class 10 student by his junior in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad triggered massive protests on Wednesday (August 20). Demonstrators from the victim’s community and Hindu groups gathered outside the private school to protest the boy’s death.
The mob vandalised the school and even reportedly assaulted school staff. The police brought the situation under control by the afternoon.
Here’s what happened.
Boy stabbed to death
On Tuesday (August 19) afternoon, a class 10 student named Nayan packed his bags to leave for home after the school bell rang. He had just come out of the gate when a Class 8 junior from the same school and some other boys surrounded him, as per an NDTV report.
The incident took place outside the premises of the Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad’s Khokhra at 12:30 pm on Tuesday.
The boys engaged in a verbal argument, which soon turned physical. The Class 8 student took out a knife and allegedly stabbed his senior in the stomach. The accused minor is said to have then fled the scene.
The victim was taken to a private hospital. However, he died of his injuries at 3 am on Wednesday. A CCTV footage shows Nayan walking inside the school with his hand on his bleeding stomach.
As per Indian Express, the attack was allegedly the result of a scuffle between the students a week ago.

As per India Today, the mob also clashed with the police.
The situation came under control after the cops and local politicians urged the crowd to maintain calm.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed and the accused minor arrested under the Juvenile Act for attempt to murder.
JCP (Crime) Sharad Singhal told The Indian Express, “The protestors sought that the Crime Branch investigate the case and the Commissioner has handed the case to the Crime Branch.”
The police obtained the CCTV footage and recorded statements of other students present at the time of the incident.
Singhal previously said, “We are checking CCTV footage and have also called in to examine the scene of crime to check whether there has been destruction of evidence. While the primary accused juvenile was placed under detention yesterday, another juvenile is being questioned in this matter.”
Gujarat Education Minister Prafulbhai Panseriya condoled Nayan’s demise and urged protesting parents to maintain peace. He assured justice in the case and proposed conducting a study on rising crime among children.
School to be probed
Parents of the deceased student and Hindu groups have also filed complaints against the school principal and management, demanding accountability.
The District Education Officer (city) has served a notice to the school management. Rohit Chaudhary, DEO (city), told Indian Express: “The school management has been asked to submit their detailed response on how this incident happened, where the security was placed; if the incident did not happen on the campus but close by as revealed in the primary investigation, how did the victim student soaked in blood come inside the school premises after the attack, and what action the management took."
He said there seems to be a “lapse” on the part of the school in informing the district education authorities and “taking appropriate action.”
Further investigation is on in the matter.
