Queen Margrethe, had earlier announced that she was stepping down as the ruling monarch of Denmark. This had come as a surprise for many, as no other Danish royal has abdicated the throne since 1146. But the Queen made her intentions very clear. “On 14th January, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will hand over the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik,” she said in her annual New Year’s address to the nation. The Queen will be succeeded by her elder son, 55-year-old Frederik, as well as his 51-year-old Australian wife, Mary.
