Sri Lanka is holding snap general election, called by new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will campaign for Mahayuti in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Raigad and Mumbai.

Sri Lanka parliamentary election

Sri Lanka will vote in a snap general election on Thursday (November 14), called by new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to secure a majority in parliament to back his policies in the island nation struggling to recover from a crushing financial crisis.

Dissanayake dissolved parliament on September 24 to clear the way for the general election, days after he was elected on a platform for change.

PM Modi’s rallies in Maharashtra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will campaign in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Raigad and Mumbai.

Elections to the 288-member state legislative assembly will be held on November 20, and votes will be counted three days later.

The BJP is contesting elections as part of the Mahayuti alliance, which comprises the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) of Sharad Pawar, and Congress, is fighting the polls against the Mahayuti.

Tropical Storm Usagi expected to make landfall

Tropical Storm Usagi strengthened into a typhoon early Wednesday local time as it approaches the Philippines.

World leaders have gathered in Peru’s capital Lima for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Today, ministerial meetings will take place, which will be followed by talks at the level of heads of state the following two days.

Xi Jinping in Peru

Chinese leader Xi Jinping headed to Peru on Wednesday for the APEC gathering.

He is scheduled to inaugurate South America’s first Chinese-funded port, in Chancay, around 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of Lima.

Expected to serve as a major trade hub, the $3.5-billion complex is seen as symbolic of Beijing’s growing influence in South America, where it has built a vast array of railways, highways and other infrastructure.

King Charles III’s 76th birthday

Although King Charles’s birthday is formally celebrated by the public at the well-known Trooping the Colour procession in June, the British monarch’s actual birthday is November 14.

Media sites have indicated that the King is celebrating his 76th birthday with a unique endeavour.

Delhi Mayoral polls

The long-delayed mayoral elections in Delhi will take place today.

It follows a seven-month standoff between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which led to repeated disruptions of the MCD House besides delaying the polls initially scheduled for April this year.

The mayoral term will see a Dalit candidate in office, but only for five months as political inflighting has shortened the tenure.

Congress government’s 1st anniversary in Telangana

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Saturday said the first anniversary of the Congress government in the state would be celebrated in a big way from November 14 to December 9.

The 26 days of celebrations begin on the birth anniversary of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (November 14) and conclude on the birthday of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi (December 9).

Annual Jhiri Mela in Jammu

The 11-day Jhiri Mela will commence in Jammu on November 14.

The annual fair is likely to be attended by around 20 lakh people from the northern region.

The Jhiri Mela is held every year during “Kartik Purnima” when devotees pay obeisance at the Baba Jitto temple in Jhiri village on the Jammu-Akhnoor national highway near here.
