Here is all that is set to take place throughout the day.

Last date to file I-T returns

Today marks the last day to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Assessment Year 2025-26. Every year, the ITR filing deadline is July 31, 2025, but this year, the Income Tax Department extended it by a month and a half as changes in ITR forms and Excel utilities required more backend preparations.

Notably, the ITR filing deadline was extended for non-audit taxpayers, including most individuals, Hindu Undivided Family (HUFs), and other entities not subject to audit, to September 15, 2025. As of now, there is no indication of the Income Tax Department looking to extend the ITR filing deadline.

Supreme Court to pronounce interim order on Waqf Act

Today, the Supreme Court is slated to pronounce its interim orders on three key issues, including the power to denotify properties declared as “waqf by courts, waqf by user, or waqf by deed”, which cropped up during the hearing of pleas challenging the validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

A bench headed by Chief Justice BR Gavai on May 22 reserved the interim orders on these issues after hearing both sides in the Waqf case. According to the cause list of September 15 uploaded on the apex court website, the court will deliver its order in the matter. One of the issues relates to the power to denotify properties declared as “waqf by courts, waqf-by-user or waqf by deed” as prescribed in the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

PM Modi in West Bengal, Bihar

After a visit to the Northeast, PM Narendra Modi will be in West Bengal today, where he will inaugurate the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference in Kolkata. He will then head to Bihar to inaugurate the new terminal building of Purnea airport. In Purnea, he will launch the National Makhana Board and inaugurate multiple development projects worth Rs 36,000 crore. He will launch four new trains in Bihar, including Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat Express. These new trains will enhance connectivity across the state, which is headed to assembly elections later in the year.

President Milei to visit Paraguay

Argentinian President Javier Milei is set to make a two-day visit to Paraguay in a bid to reaffirm the strong diplomatic, economic, and ideological ties between Argentina and Paraguay under the leadership of President Santiago Peña. This will be his second official visit to the country since taking office.

During their meeting, the two leaders are expected to deepen discussions on trade, economic development, and regional integration, topics they previously addressed during Milei’s brief visit in April 2025. One of the key issues for discussion will likely involve energy, specifically related to the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant. Paraguay holds a significant stake in the plant, and both countries share energy interests, though specific proposals regarding energy surplus have also come from the US.

China to release August retail sales data

China is expected to release its August 2025 data for retail sales, industrial production and unemployment figures today.  This release will include crucial indicators like retail sales, industrial production, and unemployment figures, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the nation’s economic health.

Expectations point to a potential slowdown in industrial output and investment, while retail sales growth is anticipated to show a slight improvement. The housing market continues to face a downturn, with sales from the largest developers declining significantly in August. Despite this, a government-backed trade-in program for consumer goods and interest subsidies on loans could have provided some support to retail sales.

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon to be sentenced for manslaughter

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon are scheduled to be sentenced for the manslaughter of their daughter,  Victoria. The couple was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter following a retrial in July 2025.

In early 2023, Marten and Gordon fled the authorities with their newborn daughter to prevent her from being taken into social care. The nationwide manhunt ended in Brighton, where they were arrested after more than 50 days on the run. A few days after their arrest, police located baby Victoria’s body in a Lidl bag concealed within a disused shed on an allotment.

The manslaughter conviction followed an earlier trial in 2024, where the couple was found guilty of concealing the birth of a child, perverting the course of justice, and child cruelty.
